I was using the same service for about a year because there was no other option. Just like you said, it was very inconsistent and very slow most of the time. I had the same experience you had with the response from tech support.
I dumped them as soon as cable modem became available in my area (Temecula, Ca) from Adelphia. Couldn't be happier with them. I get 1980/245 very consistently.
