| Q and A Routers often cause a problem for me. I used to have DSL through Earthlink until I moved. Now I still have Earthlink but the only broadband I could get was Earthlink Powered by Comcast. I'm content with cable. DSL was and probably always will be faster. But, getting to the point. My router often caused a problem. I would either have intermittent sync or no sync at all. Once I would bypass the router, things cleared up. Yeah, I agree that PPPoE did have something to do with it. It seemed that my router didn't like it very much. I have gone through three routers. A generic P.O.S., D-Link, and the one that gave me the least of my problems....Linksys. Once I got cable, I didn't have a much as problems (probably because of lack of PPPoE) but still find myself resetting the router and modem from time to time. Even with talking to some IS techs at work tell me that the router, is 9 times out of 10, the problem. But then again, PPPoE. As for blocking port 25...I think every ISP should do that. Earthlink is a VERY anti-spam company. It's to save your butt, and your inbox, from double the spam you probably get now. | |

| Re: Q and A Yea I agree with you. PPPoE is bad enough. But, Earthlink's service tops it off! What makes PPPoE so bad is greed. Earthlink and others oversell their services a bit too much. As far as running a Mail server: it does not necessarely follow that it will be used for spam. I don't run open relay SMTP, I don't spam and I hate receiving spam. ...and by the way, plenty of spam with Earthlink! Again, no responce ever, from abuse@Earthlink to any spam reports I have sent them. Talking about spam-neutral ISP! You see, it's all about disclosure and honesty in marketing. Blocking port 25 is a deliberate action on the ISP's part. The customer has the right to know. That's all. Earthlink's next level of service allows port 25, but you have to pay more. So it really is not a "spam blocking feature". It is Earthlink's billing concern. I'll let you know how Speakeasy turns-out after I've been with them for a few months. So fat it looks good. No PPPoe, DHCP and no ports blocked. $10/month more than Earthlink, but well worth it. | |

| Re: Q and A No, I wouldn't classify it as a spam blocking feature, but it helps. They just busted three more comercial spammers yesterday (either yesterday or the day before...but anyway). Yeah, you do have the right to know, but I"m sure 99% of all Earthlink users are not running a mail server. They don't need to discus that with people. It will just confuse them and my create negativity. The spam blocker that you might of had just blocked out "known spam." All that was is a data base of headers that they collected. Abuse@earthlink.net will only work if you send the headers. I'm sure you probably already know that. I'm not trying to insult you. Where I live, you could virtually get any ISP you want. The "newer" version of Earthlink's spamblocker works a lot better then just the "know spam blocker." Either way....aside all the minor issues. From working in the industry and dealing with many vendors (Covad,SBC,Verizon,Comcast,TWC), what works for one won't work for others. When I lived in Philly, Verizon really ...well, sucked. Everybody complained about it. Where I live now, Verizon and Earthlink fight like cats and dogs. It seems you're either Earthlink or Verizon. I'm sure you know, you just got to find what works. I hear Earthlink is horrible in southern California, but is Atlanta's #1 provider. And a little off the subject, I work in the web designer business. There web hosting is a little on the expensive side, but the support is outstanding. When I deal with clients I love it when they say that Earthlink is there hosting company. Those techs are the best around. I think they make them take Unix courses before they hire them or something. | |

| Re: Q and A Ok, now I undestand where you're coming from. If you only have Verizon to compare to, Earthlink may not seem too bad. Try one of the better ISPs and see if this "ignorant bliss" bubble breaks. How nice of Earthlink to save the world from mass confusion by refusing to disclose facts when specificaly asked! | |

| I wouldn't wish Earthstink upon my worst enemy I hate Earthlink and regret ever sharing my hard earned money with this horrible company. Tech doesn't exist. Their tech support has the dumbest f...ing idiots working for them. Obviously a bunch of crack heads from skid row. Maybe the big people of Earthlink hired them in return for free f...ing crack. Earthlink doesn't even own a damn dsl line. They lease from companys such as sbc. Covad also leases from sbc's lines. So if your speed's good with earthlink, it should be good with sbc; considering it's sbc's line. I have had times that I would be on hold for 2 to 3 damn hours before a crackhead would finally answer. Earthlink also has roughly 900 complaints so far this year with the Better Business Bureau. It proves how awful and unfit this horrible company is. You would think that the consumers who had gone to the extreme of reporting Earthlink to the Bureau, obviously had extremely bad service. People don't just contact such a bureau over a small issue. I cancelled my account with this stupid provider and couldn't be happier. If I had to choose between having Earthlink for free the rest of my life or the gas chamber; I would take the gas chamber any damn day of the f...ing year! If you're planning getting Earthlink and don't believe the reviews for some odd reason; I suggest taking a prozac the size of a freekin football approx 4 times/day. | |

| Re: I wouldn't wish Earthstink upon my worst enemy So did you have a real issue to discuss or maybe a real example or are you just so ill that you failed to include that in your incoherent complaining? Ive had service with this company since it was Mindspring and even during the complex merger its proven to be pretty much, compared to other providers, stellar. Of course, the hold times have definitely increased but at least when I speak with a representative, they at least have an idea as to what your talking about (which is rare because I can always email, or chat online on the ELNK site.) | |
