service levels slacking

as i have said the whole time.. you pay for what you get.. seems cheaper isnt always better. Service is really lacking with cavalier these days. Seems like they are getting tired of having to fight verizon to get things done right, on the other hand once things are setup they usually run pretty good.

Cavtel customer service

Yeah, I am hoping once I get the speed issue resolved I don't have to deal with their customer service anymore. The local phone service seems fine, and the DSL connection is stable, just not the right speed. It would be nice to see Cavtel get their customer service to a higher level.

Re: Cavtel customer service

Give them a call! (877) 459-9182. They respond quickly. I had the same issue when I signed up and was set up in September. They had me set up on 384 (this was the standard up until June 2003). They made the switch right then to 960 when I was on the phone. 5 minutes later I was getting 640Kbs up/down (I am 17000 feet from CO so this is best I can get. Connection speed has been constant)!

It seems that the tech department is separated from the customer service department just enough that they do not know what is being sold right now, but they do know their stuff. Save yourself the hassle and give them a call from 8am-12midnight ANY day of the week.

Let us know how things go!

Oct 16th Update

Wound up calling the DSL dept on the 16th. I had gotten an email response from customer service the day before telling me that my line may have been set to 384 because of a distance issue and I should call DSL support. (Of course the previous email was from DSL telling me to call customer support, the old circular routine). Anyway, got a very helpful person on the phone in the DSL dept. She checked my distance from the CO and came up with 12,300 feet which agreed with what I had already found out on this fine website. Then she checked her distance chart and told me I would probably only get 700-800K at that distance if they set the line to 960. She said if I had problems with errors or losing the connection they could set it to 768K and that it might be more stable. Then the lady in the DSL dept transferred me to the customer service department and gave them the info to put in a work order for a speed change. The customer service rep put the work order in the system and said it may take up to 5 business days to get switched. After 24 hours it is still at 384. But I think they will come through in next week. When they up the speed I'll run some speed tests and let you know what I'm getting at 12,300 feet.

10/22/2003 Update

Look like they bumped up the speed on the DSL line. Looks like they bumped it up to 768/768 not 960/960. At 12,300 feet from the CO I guess 768 was the best they could do. I've done one test so far and got 699 down and 524 up. Not too shabby. Overall I'd have to say the package with the local tele for $50 a month is a good deal. I'm getting 1/2 the speed down I got with Comcast, and 2.5 times faster up, all for the same price as comcast, and now no bill from telephone bill from Verizon. I will try some more speed test at off-peak times.
