The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that they can't make money off of a $30-$35 per month service if they have to do anything special to your line. If your line isn't already suitable for DSL, they'll lose money trying to get it to work.

Now, if you want Business DSL at $60 per month plus $25 setup plus $99 for the modem, maybe they'll do more for you. But even then, they might just say you can't get it.

Just A Guy

Re: The Bottom Line

As someone who works for an ISP offering DSL from Verizon, I can tell you, VZ is a very unorganized group. But, then again, so are most businesses, large and small. And realize, the people you are speaking with really don't care if you get service. They get paid either way. Go with a local ISP offering DSL, if you can. Sure, they will eventually deal with VZ and probably cost you more, but they will care more about your business and they will be the ones dealing with VZ.

Re: The Bottom Line

It's interesting that you have Comcast cable service.

Going with a third party might just result in more finger-pointing.

If the third line does not work I will try ordering new dialtone and try to put a note on the order that DSL will need to be provisioned. If that does not work I will try to order Business DSL and see if they will rework the line.
This has almost become a crusade. Hope my wife understands (:>)

Re: The Bottom Line

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the third line won't work, a new line won't work, and business DSL won't work.

I was simply trying to point out that at the prices they charge, it's not worth their while to fix any problems (assuming that they can be fixed in the first place).

Maybe you should just order a T1. They'll get that to work. (Tell your wife it's DSL, and don't let her see the bill!)

Re: The Bottom Line

Bottom Line,
You are right. Third line probably won't work either but it doesn't cost me anything to try. I am not holding out much hope at this point.
I actually did look *briefly* at T1. The $ scared me. But now that I think about it, T1 is only 5X more than the cost of Satellite.

Stay AWAY from Satellite

Dont go with satellite (Direcway)! You will pay big bucks for a slooooooow connection. Check Direcwaysux.com for all the horror stories (PS direcway bought direcwaysucks.com just in case!!!!!)

Yes! (we have no room)

Tell me about it, my line is now hooked into a remote terminal, but they have no more slots for my DSL order. My service ready date is 1/21, got a call last week that we cannot provide service. Customer service said wait until the ready date because if someone cancels, they can hook you up. I already had two postponements since 12/31 ready date. I asked what if they don't have any slots by 1/21, "your order will be cancelled" came the reply. Why don't you just keep me in the queue for the next available slot? "We can't do that, you have to reorder DSL" Which puts me at the end of the list again. They just don't give a damn!

Still Waiting.

Update as of 22 Jan 2004....
I received my modem for the third line in the house. (The other two were rejected after the order was placed as being "too far"). Tuesday I went on the Verizon DSL status page and saw the line was active!! Holly S%IT they did it!!! When I got home a couple days later, I hooked the modem up and...... nothing. This is strange; it should be active. So I called support today and they told me my order had been cancelled. Just a minute I said. The order status I am looking at says active and the data you are lookin at says cancelled? Could you please explain that? Let me call DSL provisioning for you and find out. After waiting a few minutes he said he could not get through. They seem to be very busy (Yea I bet they are trying to fix al the screw-ups) could I call you back. Gave him my office number but 8 hours later I have not heard anything.

Consolation

You said in your original post that you were 16,000 ft from the CO. At 12,000 ft the DSL speed goes from 1.5M to 768K. At 16,000 ft, who knows (probably still better than dial up). Have you tried Covad or another DSL provider in your area? Will cost more than $35, but you may eventually qualify for Verizon DSL.

Re: Yes! (we have no room)

Yes I tried Covad. They do not have a line in the central ofice and broadpand reports don't seem to list anyone else. I am on a RT. When I called back the next day to find out what was going on they tersted my line and said I was 7,900 feet from the "CO" which has to be one of the 3 RT units in my area. This is the closest one. By car folloiwng the cable it is 1.3 miles or 6,800 ft. Must be some backfeeding going on somewhere. The others are 3.3 miles and 3.0 miles by road.

Where ever the other 2 lines to my home are connecyed, they both "test over 18,000 feet".
Once it gets over 18,000 they will not give a distance.

Re: Yes! (we have no room)

Once it gets over 18,000 they will not give a distance.

This isn't true. I spent over 300 dollars in cell phone charges (Verizon Wireless) to get my DSL installed. When I tried to place my order (Mount Airy MD) they said that I wasn't qualified. I knew this to be complete BS as I have had ISDN service in the past. My ISDN line was just shy of 11,000 feet when I had it.

So, of course, the sales department says that they can't place the order. I am too far. No, I ask, "Exactly how far am I?" "31960 feet from the CO"

I was like, WTF?!!? How can I be that far from the CO? I live 1.2 miles from the CO. We are a semi small town. I'm in an older section. There is no way that they would run me 5 miles away to some RT when I have at least 3 RT's an the CO within 2 miles.

Come to find out...

The whole problem came from the fact that Verizon Landline did not have distance information for my Cable and Pedastal in my neighborhood.

No information, it seems that Oasis goes haywire...

Now.. If you are getting bouncing distance qualifications.. Call into repair.. Have the repair tech do a MLT on your line. Problems in the line will cause the distance calcuation to go haywire.

Re: Yes! (we have no room)

Verizon has a 1800 number, why didn't you use one of your land line to call instead of your cell phone.

Wow, glad I read this

I received notification that I am 'qualified' for DSL as well. I found this suspicious since I knew for a fact that I am over 18k feet from the CO. Thought maybe they put up a new CO or something, but doubted that too.
I called them, and the lady I spoke with did not give me a warm and fuzzy that she knew what she was talking about, so I decided to leave well enough alone and stick with my cable modem.
But I have a feeling, had I tried, your scenario would have been repeated with me..

A little hope!?

I'm in pretty much the same situation as yourself. I actually had DSL at the house previously, all of a sudden when I went to get the DSL back I'm 24,800 feet. (per Verizon, previous Harris tests reported 10,400)

The existing Verizon said no way, even though my neighbor has it. The brand new pair looks like the DSL is going "smoothly", should know in the next day or two.

Should a customer have to deal with this? No, but I'm on a crusade!

Verizon...very poor customer service

No problem getting DSL from VOL...but they want to charge me for the first month which, according to the package I signed up for, should be free, and then a reduced rate for the second and third month. After calling customer service, I was told it would take two to three billing cycles to fix THEIR error. A coworker warned me about Verizon because they did the same thing to him. He just flat out cancelled. I am about to if I do not get satisfaction. Better luck to others out there if you choose to deal with Verizon.

Re: A little hope!?

Well, I guess I opened my mouth a little too soon. They came back and said I was behind a DLC. Yeah. Guess I should have kept my Speakeasy DSL last year. I do have Comcast cable modem, however my upstream is 5k. It's because I have too many cookies on my PC, and there was nothing they could do.

You need to get a life

Get over it. Lighten up. You can't get Verizon DSL. Stop whining about how it hurts every time that you bang your head against the door. Give up OCD boy.

Don't Give UP!!

I had trouble with VZ before, I tried for three years calling every week to see if DSL is avaiable in my area, untill last month I finally got it. I know your feeling that the fact it is in your area but you can't get it, so be patient, I know that your paticent is running out FAST, but don't give up hope there still might be a chance to get the service on your last line.

***Also check out the Verizon forums to see if you can get one of their employees to help your sitituation if the DSL, dosen't work.***

Re: contact your state PUC !

what does your states puc have to do with life support?
the puc (public utility commission) or whatever its called in you state, oversees public utilities and sense dsl is provided by a public utility (the telephone co) thats who you should complain to!

Get another ISP, calling your PUC is overkill.

I had a mirror of this guys problem. Except its been over a year of verizon telling me I could get service, and that they would hook it up. I have a log of over 15 calls and 28 total hours. FU Verizon!

???? Have you Tried

Have you ever contacted presidential appeals for your state I know from other reviews that if anyone can get to root of the problem it would be them. I dont have the number for your state and cant find the 800 number but with all ur info that should be able to assist you. You have nothing to lose everything to gain.......

Zylcho

@comcast.net

Too many problems....

South jersey DSL is hit or miss, more or less miss. Support is horrible. Even business class gets treated the same way as residential customers, even though we pay twice as much. Got tired of losing money from CC charges not going through.

I am Comcastic now and will be looking closely at my Verizon bill for credits.
