"No one else I know throughout the country gets the speeds we CAN achieve." is not quite true as it neglects those who have FTTH which can not only match OOL speeds but far exceed it.
I suggest you peruse the Fiber Optics forum and see what they have to say on the subject of speed and why there is so much excitement now that Verizon is rolling out fiber trials and has signed the equipment contracts.
