| The loop length issue Hi Blunted 1,
I more than agree with how disappointing it can be when the ILEC (incumbent local exchange carrier, a.k.a. the phone company) adds loop length. The ILEC is responsible for installation and maintenance of their infrastructure (Central Office equipment, cables, phone poles, neighborhood distribution boxes, etc.). They may have buried feeds, they may have feeds that run along poles. The point is that they are obligated to keep all of that gear operational. Eventually all of it will need to be replaced due to age, but may also need work for repairs, or to increase capacity. Just like the city may set up a detour while they work on the roads between you and your grocery store forcing you to drive a longer route to get there - if your ILEC is working on laying new cable, or accommodating work on sewers, or roadwork, etc., they could easily cut-over your loop to a span with is much longer than what you originally came in on. This can take a perfectly decent loop (say 5,650 ft.) and add a mile to it (thereby blowing its performance as an ADSL loop away).
This is not an uncommon occurrence, but is usually correlated with the warmer seasons, and is often temporary (it may still take months). The really bad part is, there is nothing any of us can do about it. Unless and until we can get the phone company to at least warn us about when they're doing work like this, we are as much in the dark about it as you are.
So while we do see loops grow to accommodate work in a given neighborhood, I must say the ILEC most notorious for this is Verizon - particularly Verizon East. But if you think about it, they are behind the eight ball to replace copper that's been in service for decades all along the eastern seaboard -- much of which has been in service since the 1950's.
Don't even get me started on Florida's loops after all of the hurricane damage.
Incidentally, it also goes the other way. For example, we have many clients who learn they are on loops which are too long for DSL service initially, but by the end of some construction project in their area, their permanent loop length is suddenly well within limits. They find they are miraculously now eligible for service. Wouldn't you know, we usually do not see those posts on DSLR
If you would like to contact me directly, I am willing to see if there is anything we *can* do to improve things. It's not hopeless.
Best regards, Lawrence@Speakeasy.net

| We've been trying Mr. Blunted 1
The support agent working your service ticket has left repeated messages for you with your mother. I have sent email to you offering my assistance. I have now posted twice on your behalf in this forum.
I am confused by remarks you made in your service ticket. Perhaps you will respond to one of our attempts to contact you and provide clarification.
We are all bound by the laws of physics. Even online gamers.
Meanwhile, your service ticket was placed into PCR (pending customer response) and will close automatically unless it is touched.
Best regards, Lawrence@speakeasy.net

| Re: We've been trying sorry i am gonna cancel as soon as i find out some things but i am not happy and there probably isnt anything you can do to get me back to 5600 feet is there. also i am not paying a disconnection fee because i signed up for 768/6.0 and you cant provide me with the contract i had so you shouldnt charge me when i disconnect. | |

| Re: We've been trying It's been my experience with speakeasy that anytime there's a problem they try to make it right. Everytime I've called with a problem a live person always talks me through it. I joined DSLR just to say that in response (since DSLR helped me make my original decision), they seem to be trying work something out for you since the situation is only temporary with the phone company. But come to think of it, I don't pay 120 a month and I am not an online gamer.:D | |

| Re: We've been trying thats why i want it fixed because it is 120 and i can get what i was getting for like 50 a month now but they still charge me 120 so i think that sucks since they downgraded me. it also doesnt seem temporary to me because it got worse and went from 5600 feet to 7100 feet then over 11000 feet so it is getting worse and i want to cancel but i read there is a $300 disconnection fee which is expensive as hell. my business sdsl line doesnt cost that much to disconnect so why does this.
i can go on and on about all the trouble tickets i had and problems but its too much so i wont. i am very unhappy with there service

| Re: We've been trying I'd ask them to give you a break on the price since you aren't getting what you paid for. It's just my opinion that you should try to talk to them. What would you change to? Cable modem? Covad or Verizon or other DSL would use the same wires as Speak EZ. I was thinking of cable, but I've heard that service is not as reliable. I almost never have service outages with Speakeasy. Like once in about a year and 4 months. Good luck.. | |

| Re: We've been trying i had a couple outages and i can get more speed from cable for 1/4 the price but i wanted them since they were rated good but i guess they arent good at all. i have covad sdsl already for my servers and that cant be the same wires cause it is very solid and never goes out at all and always get the speed i pay for. | |

| Blunted, have you spoken with Lawrence? I highly doubt that the disconnection fee applies here anyway. You mentioned that you have had this line for over a year. The disconnect fee only applies for the length of the contract(I have never seen an adsl contract longer than 1 year). Put the greenery down and talk to him, he can help. | |

| You're Kidding, Right?
Dude, you seriously do get what you pay for. I pay $150/mo with speakeasy which at first glance might seem like a lot... but lets break this down...
My money gets me:
- 768x1.5mbps ADSL ala DHCP (not crappy PPPOE) Internet - Not one but TWO VOIP Phone Lines with Unlimited calling to 22 Countries (and thats the basic DEFAULT VOIP Package here) - Terms of service that pretty much allows me to do anything I want with my bandwidth (as long as it's nothing illegal, of course) - Their billing department isn't a bunch of Nazi's like SBC aka AT&T - I'm paying $40 *less* than I was with SBC Phone Service and Anet Communications (these guys truly suck) Internet Access and that was with ONE regular land line. - Customer Service is *not* outsourced to Osama's Cousins
So I get more of everything and BETTER *everything* for $40 less than I was paying.
Now you might be thinking "the local telco has ADSL for $19.95/mo" or something similar. True, but again, you get what you pay for which in that instance is usually:
- Requires regular land line phone where they can $ rape $ you where as Speakeasy can easily implement whats called a "dry line" at no extra charge. - Upstream usually SUCKS (between 128kbps and 256kbps and what most people do not realize, is that upstream pushes downstream. The faster you can request a tcp packet, the faster you can receive one). - Outsourced or not, CSR's at the regular Telco usually have no clue WTF their talking about. - Telco Internet (as well as most Cable Providers) have a very tyrannical terms of service policy. - Most Telco and Cable companies block ports or disallow home servers completely (I mean come on, if someone would rather setup apache to have their "hi this is me" page rather than use a My(waste-of)space or Geoshitties page, whats so wrong with that?) - To get the uber-low price you're not only locked into a contract but you are forced to renew the contract to KEEP getting that price. To me, if a company has so little faith in their service that they feel they need to pull contract renewal schemes to attempt to keep their customers, then something is seriously wrong.
So you might want to re-weigh the facts before deciding to go with someone else.
