Problems with Vonage

If you are using The motorola adapter make sure it is behind your router, dont let it control your TOS/QOS.

Re: Problems with Vonage

That is a really good suggestion. After doing a lot of research, I decided to try configuring my setup that way and everything (especially my internet connection) is working much better. I am still have the occasional "packet loss" which can be a bit annoying, but not the end of the world. The last tech guy I spoke to (#4) was actually very helpful and patient, and among other things he helped me set a static ip address for my Motorola phone adapter, and he also made the packet size smaller, to make packet loss less noticeable. I think it helped a bit, but I still do lose a little bit here and there. Any suggestions?

Re: Problems with Vonage

If you have packet loss, it is an issue with your ISP. You would be experiencing problems if you were playing an online game also, but just wouldn't notice it so much since nobody minds a little 'stutter' while playing a game. The only thing that can help your situation is a call to your ISP. Vonage can only do so much to compensate for a bad connection.

Not necessarily true at all unless its in your first hop or the first few. (Possibly as short as 3rd)

PL is as much a routing issue as specifically an ISP one... possibly even more often.

I have yet to use dedicated VOIP, but with the early ones, Dialpad, Netzero, etc... quality depended greatly on actual call destination and time, more than service in general.

Re: Problems with Vonage

Hayward. The main things that affect codec are jitter. Jitter is created from a combination of latency, and over routing. Jitter sometimes results in PL, because often a jitter buffer is used, which will create PL when necisary to keep the conversation live and current. The real question is, how much PL are we talking about and does it only occur when you are using VOIP. Do some ICMP pings and traceroutes and comeback to let us now.

Also some highly compressed codecs, g.729 and g.723 create packet loss on on their own on occasion, or at least the create the appearance of PL.

Re: Problems with Vonage

Either way it isn't per se an ISP issue now is it?? Unless you happen to be buying everything from Vonage.

That's all I disputed. Much/most of it you are in Vonage's system and routing not your ISP's

Moto VT box has a PPPoE dialer built-in. You may want to connect it to the DSL modem, configure it to dial out to your ISP . Plug the phone handset in and temporarily disconnect your computer(s) from the Internet. Make some calls and note if you still have issues.

I letting adaptor control the TOS/QOS shouldnt be a problem. It works fine for me. I have it installed before my wrt54g router and set the motorola to put my router into DMZ. I have seen no slowdows or packet drops. Letting the motorola control the QOS is a good idea when the traffic on the internal network going out gets heavy.

I would not EVER put that thing in charge of your internet connection. If you want router QOS for voip get a linksys wrt54g and sveasoft firmware and use my script i posted on sveasofts forums. It is compatible with the free version of the sveasoft firmware. satori 4.0

I have worked with VOIP quite a bit at different, consumer and business levels. At the mid end level what i posted here is the best thing to do.

Packet loss? Are you using their "bandwidth Saver?" This may be the explanation for that as lower bandwidth codecs sometimes cause PL.

Re: Problems with Vonage

where is this script your talking about? I did try the Vonage behind the router and i did not have to forward any ports but i am unsure if thats the proper way to do it

I should say they appear to create Packet loss, not they create packet loss.
