A little Common Sense is

in order. I highly doubt you got two defective units. Last time I did anything with vonage EQ, you got a dial tone regardless of whether or not you were plugged into the internet. The dial tone is generated by the adapter itself and not the Vonage network. If you didn't have dial tone, you may have had a bad phone cable, a phone that was stuck in off hook mode, or even being plugged into line 2 instead of line one. Maybe you plugged the ATA into the wall without realizing you needed to disconnect (actually remove the wires)the existing service at your demarcation point. Did they have you push buttons to see if you were getting Talk Battery?

Don't waste your time trying other VOIP services until you figure out what you did wrong.

Its possible. It happened to me. Im happy now, but what a nightmare. Had to go through 2 faulty routers to get it to work!

Yes.. Vonage Has proven it self to be the first company that is standing behind the service they provide. Another VOIP company. Speaking of which i worked in VOnage as Tier 2. Just out of High School With GED. Had more knowledge about Routers/switches/computers/software then the average tier 2 Tech who were already working for the company. Majority of the "kids" working in Vonage are just fresh out of DEvry College and Have no common sense what so ever. Specially the "CS" level. You do not learn how to interact with customer or answer phone on Tech support level in devry. Devry is a "bullcrap promise" for kids who decide not to go through the four year college drama, Also More expensive then majority of the commuinty colleges. After you graduate devry promises you a good job in good company. Here comes VONAGE, the company has been bought out twice already and the ceo wants to sell it to someone else . As for the CEO of the company he is making his money has a driver driving him around in his black S500 or s430.AT&T Verizon and many more other bigger companies have thought about the idea of VOIP and the VOIP idea is been here for years.

Couple of the things consumer should know about VONAGE.

IT WILL ONLY WORK if YOUR DSL WORKS. and OH yea do not forget you need DSL/Cable($30 up for connection ) and it does not work with DISH properly they will sign you up but it does not work properly.... you will be calling for Tech support.

1. the Tier 1, 2 , 3 have one difference which is a stupid test they give you before you get hired in the company. and on the test they have 10 questions that i think some kid in high school with alot of computer experience can answer

2. You get promoted from tier 1 to tier 2 not cause of your knowledge about the routers, switches, adapters etc but cause you been in the company for over 1 year and kissed alot of "ASS".

3. Customer Support- the calling centers are established all over the world including countries like INDIA,China or many other South Asian countries, where the minimum wage is under 2 dollors comparing to $15 to $20 rate here for Customer Support, so you can imagine the customer rep you will have to talk to.

4. IT says $24.99 per month but they DO NOT TELL you that you have to pay for the adapter, routers. IF you dont sign the contract. which is another $99. and also THOSE ROUTERS CAN BE HACKED can GET BROKEN INTO... all you need is the IP address. so basically after your ip is stolen of the Vonage Unit. SOmeone can trace/listen/make calls from your IP. ITS BEEN PROVEN.

THere is so much more the company will try to fool you around with. VONAGE SIMPLY SUCKS and people just need to realize it that once the company is sold to a new owner hmm what are your chances of getting a better service.

So, did YOU graduate or even attend Devry??? I DID and I DID graduate (Class '92, Phoenix, AZ campus). AND YES Devry has a very good placement center. Devry's curriculum is as good, if not better than most colleges. I was in the CIS program. Every computer programming class had a programming lab that went along with it. DeVry grads have gone to work for very well know company's. So, don't go putting down something you have no clue about.

you assume

that everybody who signed up with Vonage is a clueless person with no IT knowledge just sitting around like a duck waiting for smart people like you to give us the "inside scoop."

I am happy with my Vonage account and I strongly recommend it to my friends and family. For some of them it worked, for some it did not.

Jokes aside, your scepticism is around everything you claim you have an experience on: collage, corporate life, VoIP technology and kiss-ass-know-how. That is FINE by me, you are entitled to your opinion.

What I disagree with you is that you are trying to discourage people away from VoIP for reasons that do not make sense to me. Are you concerned somebody may hack my computer, or listen to my phone calls? If somebody's life needs that kind of a jolt, then PLEASE - MAKE MY DAY. Otherwise, step aside and let people make their own minds up.

(For the rest of the people out there: there is NO risk of IP hacking that a good firewall, antivirus, cannot cope with.)

using vonage for about 6 months. we have 20 + units
and very few problems.cs is a very big problem. they have
grown at an alarming rate & I assume have trouble hiring &
training staff. If the adapter works out of the box you
have a great service at a super price

Two myths

Good customer support does not mean good service, and
bad service does not mean bad customer support.

I don't think VoIP requires IT skills but some common sense comes handy. A good internet connection, a router and a VoIp adapter should have no problem communicating with each other. That alone should have you wondering why you were not getting a dial tone.

I think you were too hasty in cancelling your account and you will spend the next month or so arguing about taxes and shipping fees which to me is simply ridiculus. Get over it and move on. Your peace of mind is more important.

good luck.

Vontage sucks

One of the problems with many different ISP, and VoIP companies is they have shitty support. One thing you have to remember about techs. They HATE Thier jobs. They get a lousy salary (often subcontractors with no benefits, and no protection). How would you fell if you were an IT guy, and made $8 an Hour? That's the ones that are in the states. They have to deal with angry customers all day. Also about the firmware systems often sit on a shelf for many months before they are sold. Not to say they are old a firmware update brings them up to date. Unfortunately do to cooperate greed the situation with customer service is only going to get worse. I'm a dealer, and an installer for many different ISP, and VoIP companies. Dealer support isn't much better then customer support. I have heard that Vontage sucks, and I heard enough complaints about it to stay away. Your problem make it more real to me that I made the right decision. I have Packet 8, and I like it the best. Good Luck

Re: Vontage sucks

any why wouldn't Packet 8 have the same afflictions that you've attributed to Vonage (corporate greed, angry customers, shelf life, quality support, etc.)?

And if you're so bothered by all these, why not stay with your landline? We are talking at best of savings of about $30-$50 a month and you are acting as if someone has a gun at your temple.

It's like those movie reviews by a bunch of people who "haven't seen the movie but heard the story from somebody who did."

bless your heart, you made me laugh

Is it really Vonage that sucks?

Bad number transfer is not always Vonage's fault. Far from always. There could be many many reasons why it went bad. Your original carrier could have screwed it up. There is also third party carrier in between. Sure, you can just blame Vonage, but it would be a stupid thing to do without properly investigating the problem.

Re: Is it really Vonage that sucks?

It is really Vonage that sucks. I'm also in the middle of the transfer hassle... 2months and counting. There is a third party carrier but Vonage will do nothing to get that 3rd party straight. Very anoying.

Have you used Packet8s tech support yet?. It could be just as bad!. The key is to educate your self. I just installed Vonage last week and the process was nice and smooth. But instead of ordering the free adapter from them I got it from Radio Shack for $49.99 with $50 rebate, just in case it didn't worked I had a local place to return it. Even if I don't get the rebate still the savings over verizon "freedom Package" is worth the loss. If you are switching your existing number like me make sure you know how to open the phone jacks and rout the new virtual number (line) until the transfer process is complete. I can't speak for others but sofar they haven't fail to e-mail me like 911 activation status which only took 2 days and transfer status..Like I said! I can only speak for my self but so far I am a happy camper. The only thing that worries me is the fact that is up to Verizon to cancel my current service and transfer my number but I know they are in no hurry to do so. But if thats the case I will cancel it myself and keep the current number.
