Actual Speed?

What are your actual upload and download speeds? Does the speed vary with the time of day or the weather? What kind of ping times and jitter are you seeing?

So far, weather is not an issue, ping times are around 650 to 750 mS, not sure on the jitter thing....

Re: Actual Speed?

Thank you for the numbers. It's looking good.

Jitter is the variation in ping time when you repeatedly ping the same address. It matters for VOIP, because a large amount of jitter will cause the audio to become choppy.

Re: Actual Speed?

I coach a T-Ball game tonight, then I have a meeting, however, when I get home (provided the wife lets me play some more since I have been ignoring her) I will put up some ping screen captures. I forgot to do that, and I should have. Thanks for the reminder!

Here are the results from my ping test this evening. Doesn't look like much jitter, but the sky is clear, may be different in the rain....

Re: Actual Speed?

Again, thank you for the ping times. Those times are very stable. VOIP should work, so long as the individual provider doesn't have their timeouts set too low.

Latency

What kinds of latency are you seeing? I know satellite inherently has about 500 ms of latency, but I was wondering how bad it was.

Re: Latency

What is the impact of latency? Can I play real-time Internet games or make Internet phone calls on your service?

The WildBlue system is engineered to help offset the impact of latency, which is the delay caused by sending signals from the earth to the satellite and back again. However, there is a delay of about a half second as the signal travels up to the satellite, back down to the gateway, up to the satellite and back down to your modem. For most applications this latency does not affect performance, however, there are some applications like voice over IP (telephone service delivered over the Internet, also known as VoIP), or real-time interactive gaming, where latency will have a noticeable effect on performance over the WildBlue network, as it would on any satellite-delivered service.

nice how they say a half second sounds a lot better than 500ms....

The bottom line is that there is a delay from the point that you hit ENTER after typing in a new web address. That delay is noticeable because I am on a T1 at my office. There was a delay with dial up and this delay with WB is about the same, however, once the page starts loading, thats where you see the difference. Latency? Yes. Bad for the average surfer? Heck no...

Take care!
