| Anon | Patience is a virtue....
I ordered Fast Access July 10 and July 27 the kit arrived. I certainly didn't expect it overnite and even 2 weeks is good for delivery. I'd even be happy with 3 weeks. As long as I didn't get billed, all fine by me. I've got my service turned up and am satisfied with the results. Keep things simple and all goes well.

| Anon | When is BELL SOUTH supposed to send the modem?
Does anyone know when Bellsouth is really supposed to send the DSL box (4060) ? The customer service said 7-10 days but could be faster. Is that 7-10 days from the order? Or 7-10 days from the day they tested that the DSL connection had good signal? They sent a tech on August 8th, and the customer service seems to think that the DLS box gets sent after that? That seems asinine! Why would you have to wait more days after it is activated? I was hoping I would get it this week, but no go. I'm beginning to think that self-install causes a delay. The tech did not have any DSL box with him to connect.
Also I am in Tamarac FL and the CO is like 3.6 or more miles away in Coconut Creek. But the tech said there is fiber from it. I wasn't here so wasn't able to get details. The distance is like 19,637 from the CO. So I wonder if I'll get shitty speeds or of there is fiber to the area it will be ok? I'm off of Baily Rd. and 441 closer to Rock Island Rd. (or about in the middle). Any comments are appreciated. Please copy to my email also. I work for an International ISP and do RAS equipment (Lucent Max, Max TNT, APX 8000, but nothing with DSL yet) for other countries, so I am a tad bit more knowledgeable than the average.

| Anon | No Alcatel for Self Install
Hey - before you get your kit, you might want to call and check with the sales department. They don't send out Ethernet modems with the Self Install option. They told me it'd be $150 installation if I wanted that type.

I too needed the external modem for my particular install. Same old story: $150 for a professional install. I was told on the phone that the external modem costs two to three times as much. That would explain the $150 charge. I cancelled my order due to their inflexible self-install. They cancelled my order, and my telephone too! I was without telephone service for three days! Mindspring/Earthlink will supply the external modem for free, but I wouldn't recommend them either. They are still jerking me around on my install.

I don't know for a fact if this is true, but...
I heard a rumor that, if when you sign up for FastAccess you say you have a Mac, you get the external Ethernet modem.
This could be considered dishonest, of course (or maybe you just made a typo).

| | | Anon | two to three times as much? BellSouth WISHES! Just so you know, Bellsouth pays Efficient Networks $15 for either the PCI 3060 or USB 4060... yeah, that's right FIFTEEN DOLLARS! On the other hand, Alcatel charges BS $150 dollars for the speedtouch home.... now do you understand why they won't let you self-install an Alcatel? Oh, and plus they give you a 3COM NIC to go with it (another $50 or so, I'm guessing)... though some of you will get SMC NICs, and if you have a problem with it (compatibility-wise), I'm guessing you could call up and have 'em switch it out for the 3COM.. =) | |

| what am I getting?? I ordered Bellsouth DSL exactly three weeks ago to this day and they've run me around with the delivery times on my modem. So if I requested the internal modem, then which one am I getting? Alcatel or some off brand? I'd really like to know just for the sake of knowing.
thanks peace LaserFloyd

| as below, you will be getting the Efficient Networks 3060 internal PCI modem. However, I HAVE seen a few people request the internal and accidentally be shipped the external; if this happens, call 1-888-321-ADSL, option 1, and request they cross-ship you a 3060 because that's what you requested. Anyway, the chances of that happening are slim, so I'd be counting on the internal PCI modem. It's an okay modem, I guess, as long as you don't have a Soundblaster sound card, as it sometimes causes IRQ conflicts with the "SB16 Emulation"... you'll know you have this problem if you have any sorts of problems installing the drivers.. one of two things will happen a) the drivers won't install at all.. or b)it'll seem like they install, but you'll get an exclamation mark next to it in device manager. Oddly enough, it doesn't happen with all SBLive/3060 combos. Unfortunately, the best modem is the Alcatel, and trying to get BS to give you one of those is like trying to get the pope to watch a porn flick. Anyway, the 3060 isn't really all that bad of a modem, to be honest, and 90% of our calls are on the 4060, which is a real pain in most cases. =) | |

| It's curious that nobody at BS FastAccess ever mentioned that due to a problem getting the USB and PCI modems to work that I'd be charged $150 for my wonderful SpeedTouch Home. My billing cycle ends on the 18th of each month and so far there is no $150 charge for the SpeedTouch Home or for the guy who had to come out to install it.
Did I get lucky or something?
However, one thing I'm upset about, after reading that BS usually gives away the NIC that the SpeedTouch requires, is that I had to give up one of my two existing NICS (a 3Com that wasn't working quite right with the SpeedTouch) in order to have the BS guy give me an SMC NIC. That's an approximately US$50-$70 value.
Do I stand a chance of getting BS to reimburse me for this or should I just be thankful my DSL is (mostly) working fine and just leave well enough alone?
-gary.
