Home users...

Dear alanhdsl,

Very good point. To most Telcos and business class focused DSL ISPs, home users are NOT a priority. This is a well known fact in Telco technical circles. There is an incredibly low profit margin in home DSL service. Spend over one hundred bucks a month on a business class SDSL connection and you'll be thrilled - usually (except when the bill comes every month )

For the most part, good DSL service is generally still expensive. You'll need to spend over one hundred bucks a month on average to have a "guaranteed" (read the fine print) always-on connection. If you're willing to deal with a lost connection once in awhile and sporadic technical support calls, my experience is that residential DSL service is usually more than adequate.

Re: Home users...

MATT,
Same is true of POTS service too. Your home line goes down and usually it's "We'll get to it"
A business phone goes down, usually same day repair. Again the telco are making very little (comparative) profit on any kind of residential service.

One thing I neglected to mention is that I had to move my website from primenet.com. They used to sell extra web space for a nominal fee, but they won't do that for home customers any more. Another example of "home users are a pest", I think.

Re: Home users...

And now, Global Crossing has decided they want out of the consumer market altogether. They're no longer taking DSL orders in Phoenix/Tucson, and it's unclear exactly where the legacy Primenet users will end up. Frontier, the home service arm of Global Crossing and provider of Lightning Link DSL is being sold to Citizens Telecom.

Re: Home users...

And here's the final verdict ... Global Crossing is selling off its Primenet home users to Earthlink. I don't know yet how they plan to handle DSL users, as they go through Qwest and I believe Earthlink uses Covad. Switching DSL carriers is not something I want to go through, so I'm signing up for Qwest as my ISP. Wish me luck....

I sorta take this comment of "Residential customers don't mean anything" to heart since I am a 33.5 year veteran that works everyday to help provide premium service to our customers in rochester, new york. Understand that DSL is at best very hard to provide due to the fact that we are providing state of the art technology over very old cable and outside technology. EVERY customer means the same to us. We work very hard to provide the service of dialtone and all other services. We have departments that handle POTS customers and another that handles business. The business force is much smaller than the POTS force and the business force is used to do centrex, dsl, DID trunking...etc. Business customers pay much more than the average POTS customer and multiple lines and trunks out of service are much more detremental to the business. There is also greater competition for the business base. Do you have any third party phone companys asking you if they can provide service to you? I did not think so. A business on the other hand could be a large part of revenue, they deserve service, but remember what I said earlier, the business force does business and the POTS force does POTS, so there is only a wait for the DSL because of the business customers. DSL is qualified by cable repair techs. It will now be done over the internet via a special site. Anyway keep your cool. The startup problems and learning curves are getting better. We all value all our customers, some just need a priority due to the nature. Phoneguy1

Re: Home users...

Hi Phoneguy,
Glad to see the installers/support staff of an ISP stand up for themselves when deserved.
As you most likely have read, I am most impressed with Frontiers handling of DSL.(if you have not seen it, my review is in this section).
I have been on the net since before AO-Hell version 1 and of course, never went back.
Guess I am too smart with computers to fall for many of these companies, cough, garbage.
This is a young technology, and still needs improvement, we all know that, or should know that.
We here in Rochester were blessed a few years ago with a killer ice storm that made our above ground wires fall to the ground, so we have many more new lines then most areas.
I agree with you that Frontier does take very good care of its residential customers.
I talk to people all over the world on the net, and very few have the level of service I get here.
Before Global Crossing bought Rochester Telephone, RTC was one of the largest phone companies in the US if I am not mistaken. They had great experiance all over the country with support to business and residential customers.
I am pleased to have you and your people providing my service.

PS, SDSL for home soon?
Or 1.5Mb/256 rather then 1Mb/128 ?

Primenet me too

I too had an interesting experience with US West (Now Qwest). First I qualified, then I didn't, then I did then I didn't. This went on for about 6 months. One day, a box showed up on the steps!! It was a DSL 675 Cisco modem and parts. I installed it and called Primenet. They set up my IP and off I went. It didn't work, but after some help from QWEST they sent me a new NIC. The Linksys NIC I had would not work with the modem. About a week later QWEST called and said I should contact my ISP to get setup. Good communications within QWEST. It has been fine up to two months ago (that was February). I was getting greater than 500 kbps down, now it won't do better than 225 (I am paying for 256 min).
Frontier and Global Center sites don't know that Primenet is part of them.
