@adsl.bellatlanti

You're too kind!

$50-60/month for faster throughput???? C'mon! How about increasing throughput to competitive levels for the same price or even less? Earthlink and Southwestern Bell are just two examples of companies that offer faster connections in their base packages. And cable is MUCH faster (up and down) for only $30/month. 640 down is barely broadband, and 90 up is a joke.

It is better then dialup, well not all of the time, LOL. I am with you on the cost for speed issue. I sent them a email months back about that and they never answered me. Actually sent it twice. I can't wait for the $30/month package from Optimum online! Very soon, just have to be patient.

You aren't paying $39 right now? Verizon just switched from $49 to $39 a couple months ago. And for me, DSL is much better than dialup. I have to admit, I really don't upload much, its pretty much all one-way (downstream).

I agree - The east coast Verizon customers are really getting gypped, even with the price redux. Even GTE (the "other" Verizon) does better with 768/128 service to its customers. But even that is a joke in comparison to PacBell who does 1500/128 for the same price!

Shared bandwidth or not, I'd give cable a chance if it's available. Road Runner in my area is far, far faster than 640/90, even on a bad day, and no PPPoE. And then there's Optimum Online, which makes my 1500/300 service look ridiculous -- but we're still in the same price range as Bell Atlantic's 640/90!

It really strikes me as odd that as popular broadband is, that competition hasn't driven speeds to be at least SOMEWHAT more comparable between providers.

What regions does Optimum Online service?

In response to Steely...

Well, what do you expect? Going up in bandwidth costs money right now. I have given my expectations, but today, prices are up there.

I was just reading on DSLR that someone is paying roughly $150 a month for roughly 384 ADSL connection.

I know there are Cable camps and DSL camps, thats fine, everyones entitled to their own opinion.

DSL works for me because it is dedicated. No matter how many subscribers have it in my area, the numbers won't budge. You cannot make that same claim for Cable.

And now that cable is terminating residential access to VPN, that's another reason for my opinion to sway towards DSL.

Install Time WTF?

6 weeks to get one here in Delaware. Supposed to go in Wednesday (pushed back two days from Monday). Hope it works.

How'd you get it in 14 days?

Good luck. I guess I was lucky... I ordered mine early this year when it was not such a hot item to be ordered. No strikes, no walls. I had pretty good service from everyone. When I found I had a slight buzzing on the line, they came right out and ran all these tests.

These days, I'm glad from what I've read on DSLR, that I ordered it way back when.
