I NEED YALLZ HELP!!!

Do any of you know anything about Pac Bells Dynamic IP. (please forgive me if my wording and terms are not correct, I am not very educated in this field) What I need to find out is if this Dynamic IP slows down when it is being accessed by 2 computers in the same home and at the same time. Does anyone have any personal experience or other knowledge on this issue? If so please share. I am open to all p.o.v.'s and suggestions. Thanks.

Re: I NEED YALLZ HELP!!!

DYNAMIC IP TO MY KNOWLEDGE DOES NOT SLOW YOUR COMPUTER DOWN AT ALL.. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SPEED.. ALL IT DOES IS ASSIGN YOU A NEW IP ADDRESS EVERYTIME YOU GET ON AND OFF THE INTERNET.. MUCH LIKE A DIAL UP MODEM.. YOU DONT EVER KEEP THE SAME ADDRESS.. NOW IF YOU SHARE CONNECTION THREW A HUB WHERE BOTH COMPUTERS SHARE THE SAME IP. YOU WILL RUN INTO A SPEED CONFLICT.. THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS RUN DOWN TO THE NEAREST BESTBUY.. AND BUY AND DSL ROUTER.. THAT WILL SHARE YOUR CONNECTION.. BUT GIVE THE 2ND COMPUTER A DIFFERENT IP.. SO THAT YOU WONT SLOW DOWN AS MUCH.. HOPE I WAS SOME HELP? 8^)

Re: I NEED YALLZ HELP!!!--CORRECTION!!!!!!!!!

NO TWO COMPUTERS CAN SHARE THE SAME IP ADDRESS.
WHAT U DO IS FOLLOW TONYT'S ADVICE AND GET THE LYNKSYS DSL ROUTER WITH 4 PORTS. IT HAS BUILT IN PPPoE software and it will be that much easier to use.

Re: I NEED YALLZ HELP!!!--CORRECTION!!!!!!!!!

Go to the linksys router's set up page by typing its address in your browser. (it looks something like 192.168.1.1 - all numbers and it's in your manual.) Then you have to type that in in the LAN IP address. Under that, make sure it says 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask. Click "obtain an IP address automatically"
Lower down, enable the connection for PPPoE. Type in your Pacbell user name and password. For idle time, I have 0 minutes. That should do it. My problem is that I get timed out every day or so - because Pacbell gives you a new IP every 24 hours or so (hence the meaning of dynamic IP). I've been desperately trying to figure out if there is another setting to put it on so that it can constantly monitor for a new IP and I don't have to reconnect every time. If you turn your computer on and can't get connected, go to your router's set up page (192.168.1.1 or whatever it is) and click disable connection, continue, then enable connection, then continue. This will get you back on line with a new IP, but it's annoying to do
Anon No it doesn't. I hope you have a Linksys Cable/DSL router to route your I.P.'s

You can't access ANY IP with two computers at once! You can use your ip on one and dhcp the other computer..... If you know how to do it... Go buy "Computers for Idiots" big yellow book, can't miss it....and you dont need a freggin router to do it....... You can use software a fast comp and a few network cards..... much more cost effective, no difference in speed, assuming your server comp isn't a POS. and you need more brains to set it up

If you have any trouble with the linksys router using Pacbell, let me know. I have this set up, using a Mac on one end and a PC on the other. It's not hard now that I've dealt with a few weeks of craziness trying to get someone to give me support with it....

Linksys Router

Please, Please, Friends do not buy linksys routers. I have much experience with them and pacbell ppoe. Save yourself alot of headaches and buy a netgear r314 internet gateway router. Same price more or less and much better quality.

Best of luck and Have Fun

all routers are good

i haven't heard of a BAD router out there, i've used the linksys for 2 years, and it's great, no problems

routers are either good or great

i wouldnt suggest linking comps through one and using internet connection sharing.

if you don't have a fast computer, it DOES slow down speeds, also, you have to leave that computer on if you want to access the internet from any other computer.

a router lets you only keep computers you want on (and files from any computesr on the network even if that one if mother computer is off), it gives you a firewall to protect from intruders

but the main thing is to not make your internet and filesharing dependant on one computer.

say that computer crashes, BOOM, you gotta resetup everything on another computer, and internet will surely be down for hours... routers don't have this problem, no moving parts, no noise, no problems!

RE: LinkSys Router

Sorry folks, I could not reply to mst252. The question here is what would the problem be with the LinkSys routers? I have used them since day one and have installed many of them for my clients.

Re: I wish I had surewest

Actually, I confirmed with a service representative. It's 40GB one-way. Which ever is higher is the one that determines your limit. Not UP/DOWN total.

Bonus

They just dropped the price of their 20/20 package down to 69 dollars. Not bad, heck I already upgraded.
