Re: I just ordered EarthLink DSL

i think you get the 1.5 with Covad install.also did you get the reg tweak and put it in.I had Covad Install and my speeds were in the 600 range.I did the tweak test on DSLreports and got a tweak and im at 1.2 to 1.3 with a 300 upload.at peak times i got down to 1.0 to 700(thats still fine by me)

Beware... the combination of Verizon, Covad, and Earthlink is a deadly one. I've had a trouble ticket open since the day I got DSL about a month and a half ago with no resolution. I just got bounced back and forth by a bunch of jackasses in EL's tech support for about 2 and a half hours. Today my connection finally gave out, and I'm forced to use dial-up to post right now. Some people have good experiences with EL and some don't, but if you have a bad experience with them, it is BAD.

Happy with Earthlink too.

The only problem I ever had with Earthlink DSL was that it took a month to set up. The phone company had to make special connections at the pole around the block to make sure I received the correct signal. After that, Covad came and finished the installation. At first my speed was about 4x the speed of 56k, then I found this web site and used the Tweak and now have 22x faster than 56K. I have noticed a lot of the horror stories related to Earthlink seem to be on the west coast. In general I have heard many people do not like Pacific Bell over there, this may be the reason they are unsatisfied with Earthlink, since Pac Bell coordinates with them. I live in Long Island NY and my service has been flawless since installation in August.

Wow, from 4x to 22x. That's real good. What tweak did you download? I ordered DSL from Earthlink a few days ago, so I'll need the tweak to get speeds even higher. Thanks.

Re: Earthlink good, Pacific Bell bad

Yes, I believe the problems with Earthlink on the West Coast (San Francisco Bay area in particular) have to do with Pacific Bell and not Earthlink. I actually waited until Earthlink offered DSL in this area, since I was so happy with their dial-up service, and I didn't want to have to deal with PacBell all by myself. Well, Earthlink is fine to deal with, but these last two months (October and November 2000) have been a humbling experience - lots of down time, and now my DSL connection is much, much slower than my dial-up connection (try 16/71 kbps for a depressing experience!). The extremely slow connection has been happening since 11/17/00, and I'm not the only one in the Earthlink PacBell space that is having the problem. I realize that Earthlink does not own the wire that goes to my home, but they do need to do a better job managing their suppliers, at least that's what I think. Good luck with DSL in your area.

good experience with earth link

I am living in Dallas, TX and I am very pleased about earthlink/verizon service. The installation was done by the now infamous Covad. It went smoothly and they were very courteous. I have only experienced one down time and it only last for 2 hours. I'll recommend earthlink/verizon to anyone what wants dsl connection in the DFW region.

just my 2 cents

Re: Works 4 me !!!

Glad you had a good experience. Usually when snags occur, it is the phone Co. (but not always). If you run into anything which you dislike, call and get the person's name and ext. They are prompt and courteous, but at times swamped. Try calling at off peak hours.

What speeds to you get and how far are you from the CO ( with the DSL Reports test )? Just curious.
