Couldn't agree more

As a person who put up a satellite dish to escape Cablevision's high priced mediocre cable TV service, I was very surprised to find that their cable internet (OOL) is among the best. I've been on their system in Freehold, NJ for just over a month now, and have nothing but praise for the system. Easily installed, very fast, and little downtime. Even at $39, the price they charge those of us who don't partake of their cable TV service, it's worth it.

Need OOL now

@67.Weehawken1

How Did u get that deal??!?

how did u get the modem free and only 12 month contract?!?!?!?!
I live in Essex county (next to Hudson) and I have cablevision as well. But they only offered me 24 month contract and the modem for $99
Please tell me and email me at jarrroyo1@mindspring.com

Dynamic IP

Your IP is not as dynamic as you think it is. It changes only if you change hardware or someone on your subnet has a MAC address that hashes to the same place yours does. It's rare..but it does happen.

No throttling.

THROTTLING USAGE
OOL does not throttle anything.

Re: No throttling.

Noun 1. throttling - the act of suffocating by constricting the windpipe.

My upload 'pipe' was 1MB for 5 years. Last week it went to ~1/7th of that...I suppose the aliens on Mars did that?

Re: No throttling.

throttle and cap are 2 different things, throttle means the max speed consistently changes, the upload is not throttled, it is capped at a fixed rate.

They are 2 different things but the reviewer is correct...cap is a limit on the amount...throttle is a limitation of the speed.

Cox has a cap of 30GB/mo or whatever it is.

Comcast has the magic cap of whatever they feel like making it but they don't bandwidth throttle as least that I've seen.

DirecPC and OOL throttle speeds in accordance with their FAP/TOS/AUP.

maybe on your isp, on ool a cap is the max speed set in the modem config, throttle is the same on any isp, throttle means the speed is changed automatically all the time based on usage, ool does not throttle

ool's caps are 10,000/1,000 normally, or capped uploaders are 10,000/150

no throttle on ool exists and no "monthly" caps

Re: No throttling.

What you're referring to is FAPping. What OOL does is throttling.

They do throttle upload sppeds. They\ way not to get throttled is to only upload for about 1 to 2 hours and then stop for an hour. It actually comes down to if you have the highest percentage of uploading on the network (UBR in your area) and then you will get throttled.

Re: No throttling.

I had OOL for 3 years and it was great for the first 2. Now it was cap after cap.. went from 10/1 to 7/1 to 5/1 and that 5/1 was on a good day.. The thing that got me the most mad is when I called them about it they said "what are you worried about it's still faster then DSL". Well as of last week I now have Verizon Fios 15mb down / 2mb up and so far so good. I know the service is new and only time will tell but I am very happy not to have to deal with CV anymore..

Re: No throttling.

That's NOT TRUE. For two years it was never less then 9000 down now it's never more then 5000.. it's that way all over Long Island

They do throttle uploads when you upload for a long amount of time. But optonline doesn't tell you how long you can upload. It's how they have their network setup, who ever is uploading the most for the longest amount of time at that time, gets throttled to .15 megabits upload.

Optonline lies to their customers every single day about everything. When you ask to speak to a supervisor, they give you a lead tech and they lie that a supervisor can't come to the phone. But if you scream loud enough, they have to put a supervisor on the phone. The supervisors are scared to talk to the customers. All the phone techs mute the calls and they call the customers idiots and a few other names I can't mention and they goof on the customers amongst themselves.

Re: Throttling - Laughing at the customers

I'm leaving CV / BOOL as soon as I can get FIOS into my shop. I have and pay for BOOL and for close to a 2 months I have had horrible download speeds to "Windows Update" ( See Slow Windows Update in OOL )and CV / BOOL cant/wont fix it. If I switch my equipment to Verizon DSL its 10 Times faster to the Windows Update site and its downloads. It was not this way until a few months ago, but I'm done complaining to the BOOL Support. They point the finger at Microsoft but the proof is in the pudding.

Throttling/Capping

OK, first, to throttle something is to limit its speed. A cap is a size limit.

If you hit their cap, which may be an ammount, or a speed for a certain amount of time, you are then throttled.

I can understand why they do this, but the only frustrating thing is, they do not tell you what these limits are, and give no warning to you before they start throttling.

I realize that this is because they are watching patterns, and it would be hard to just give a strait #, especially when people would use this number to limit their own bandwidth usage to just below what would be accepted, but it makes you feel alienated....

I would recommend that OOL would either post solid cap numbers, or give some sort of 24 hour notice to anyone thought of abusing the system (and the reason why), or both.

Aside from that, my service has been great. Great DL speeds, good UL speeds, good pings to gaming servers.

Tech support needs a little work, but it all depends on who you get on the other end when you call.....
