Can I use a used modem with Rogers?

Rogers has this new promotion. If you buy a modem for 99 then will give you a 99 credit and 3 months free. But I thought can I just buy a used modem and sign up anyways? When I tried to do this, they asked for the serial number. Will the serial number on the used modem work? I want to figure this out first before I buy a used modem or the rogers one. thanks

YouTube is really slow; it times out 4 times in Traceroute

YouTube has been really slow for me lately, so I ran a Traceroute on it. It times out four times during the process! Is this related to why YouTube is so slow for me? Is this happening to anyone else, and is there anything that I can do about it? Here are the results:

VPN to multiuser Quickbooks unacceptably slow

Hi,

Am trying to connect to a multiuser instance of Quickbooks running on a remote server. The remote server is connected to an unthrottled 6Mbpsx1Mbps DSL link. I'm using Rogers Extreme at this end, 10Mbpsx1Mbps.

Using Quickbooks remotely requires that a VPN session established is between the the server and the remote computer, but the connection is far too slow to make using Quickbooks remotely a viable exercise.

Can anyone tell me what Rogers does/does not do with VPN sessions, and if they are throttling them what kinds of real-world throughput can I reasonably expect to get? Is there any change in this based on the time-of-day, or day-of-week?

Does Rogers throttle only residential VPN sessions or do they throttle VPN session on their business internet service as well? Their site for business http://your.rogers.com/business/productsservices/internetservices/access/businessinternetaccess.asp does not state anything about this, and I don't trust their customer service reps to know enough to give me a truthful answer.

Thanks

rogers rocket stick: selling as new, but refurbished!

Hi there,

Just thought you'd be interested to know about the new scam rogers is
doing with the Rogers rocket.

I bought the "new" rocket stick, with the minimal 1 year deal. After I plugged it in, and tested it.
I'm a systems admin with over 14 years experience, so when i mean test, i mean:
tested on 1 PC, 2 laptops, with different OS's: 1 windows xp, 1 linux (centos), 1 OS X,
tested with FULL bars, right beside a rogers tower!

all I get is somewhere between 2 and 2.5mbps, nothing near their "up to 7.2mbps" download

that's not the issue i'm posting here. I called into support, and they told me my stick was activated in November, 2008. I told them i activated it in February. They said no, because the IMEI was registered on the rogers network in November.

Soooo this means i never got a new Rogers rocket stick!

I called up the phone store that i bought it from, and they said that all of the sticks are brand new, and not refurbished. I went there, and asked them to look up the IMEI for the sticks they had in stock, and guess what? They all had been previously registered on the network!

Now by law, anything that has been used once by a customer and sent back, for any reason, must be marked as refurbished.

Right now, its been a week, and I'm still waiting for a higher up, "manager" to look into my situation.

I'm curious, anyone know the law that states all repackaged goods must state they are refurbished?
Also, can rogers just go and change any info on the IMEI?

Thanks!

WARNING: Do not load the new Rogers Online Protection (ROP)

As a tech manager, I can tell you without a doubt that the new Rogers Online Protection suite produced by Radialpoint is absolute garbage.

My company’s technical services department has had nothing but problems with employees using this software; as a complimentary service we give limited tech support for users in our firm for their home computers (many people bring sensitive work home).

Everything from broken internal Windows system links to disrupted data transfers, general system slowdowns and crashes, but the worst is that after a simple test by one of our techs he was able to bypass the ROP firewall using a three-year old cracker application!

Our policy states that everyone must have up-to-date firewall and virus protection if they are to bring work data home. We normally allowed Rogers with Norton Internet Security to be acceptable for our home users, but after this fiasco I am now spending my weekend drafting new policies and trying to get all of our users’ home systems to uninstall this crap.

Notification has been made to Rogers Communications (CC: Radialpoint) but there has been no appropriate response thus far.

Until an independent third-party review can be done, I strongly recommend that no Rogers customer should install or use this software.

Regards.

Did Rogers ask you guys to upgarde your modem before August

Just received an email saying that I must take my modem to a Rogers center and exchange it for a new one or I won't have internet access. The deadline was August 7th.

Just wondering if anyone got this. I find it strange that Rogers is forcing its customers to go in and exchange the modem rather than have them come in and exchange it for us. We pay good money for Internet! Also wanted to confirm with other users here to make sure it's not spam mail. Thanks.

Here's the link of centers btw - http://assets.rogershelp.com/emailimages/modemupgrade/stores.html

[ Extreme] Rogers Norton protection to stop?

I was under the impression that the NOP was supposed to stop on June 30. But my updates are still occurring. Anybody have the scoop on this?

As an aside, I downloaded the Norton Internet Security 2009 for a free 90 trial on one of my computers. I have to say that I am impressed with this - it's the first time in many long years I can say that about a Norton product. Took less than 2 minutes to install from a 100 meg file and set up my entire network (8 devices) instantly. So far so good, but I really haven't run it through its paces.

New Twist to Discounts

For the past few years I've apparently been given a 5% 'bundle' discount on the Robbers services I subscribe to, Internet Express and Cable. Today I received a notice that unless I call in and agree to a two year contract this discount will be discontinued on my next bill.

Well, I called in alright but not to accept their ultimatium, instead I told them that if my bill changed by so much as $0.01 Rogers would be in receipt of my notice and I'd be off to satellite TV.

So, in preparation for my liberation from Robbers oppression I'd sure appreciate if anyone out there would give some input as to the good, bad and ugly of the satellite TV providers. I'm located in S. W. Ontario, not far from Kitchener.

Thanks in advance.......
