Notebook Based Rotuer/Firewall/NAT

Looking into setting up a PC based router/firewall/NAT.
Have an old notebook (Dell Inspiron 5100) with 1 LAN and 1 WLAN. Don’t really want to use the WLAN. Is there anyway to dual LAN/WAN NIC this thing?

Dell Inspiron 5100
Pentium 4, 2.66 GHz
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
Dell TrueMoble 1400 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI
1394 Net Adapter, TI OHCI Compliant

What are the possibilities with this?

Oh think maybe what I need is a PC card NIC. Suggestions?

Cool, found an old Intel Pro10/100 CardBus II. Wonder if Linux and Windows drivers are available for it? Also hope the Dell 5100 PC slot is CardBus II.

I need to purchase an un-managed, 16 port 10/100 switch for an office.

The major consumer grade switches:
Dlink
Cisco/Linksys
Netgear

- Are all comparable priced (~$65)

Anyone have any guidance as to pick one vendor over another?

Smoothwall? M0n0wall? pfsense???

Since about 6 months, I've been trying to find a good, stable and safe hardware firewall.

I have a very good understanding of networking and I would live to have something that I can fine tune to my needs and that is also very secure.
The problem I found is that there is not a lot of these appliances in the sub 3-400$ marked and they all have a lot of features that I don't need.

I was really looking at the Netgear FVS338 that seemed good to me! The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it is a proprietary thing, with limited support, limited updates and no good documentation.

And then, looking at what I have in my house, I came across an old motherboard, cpu and power supply.
That's when I thought about installing something like smoothwall on it.

Now, my "question" is... What is the best and most easy to use firewall/operating system ??? It seems to me like smoothwall is a good choice...
I HAVE NO... BUT I MEAN NO EXPERIENCE AT ALL IN THE LINUX WORLD. I don't even have a lot of experience in operating system design. I sort of know windows and mac os but that's it.
As I said, I know a LOT about the theory of networking, but not how it is implemented in operating systems.

Do I need to have such experience in order to use smoothwall???

Will I have more support and docs with such a product??

Are there frequent updates??? Are the security flaws (if there is any) fixed faster than with commercial products?

Can I really put my trust in it?? Is it stable??

I think that's all with my questions...

Thanks for your help

Hello.

I am trying to share my internet connection using a Linksys WRT54G.

In Setup/basic p, I have put the following config:

*Internet setup-Internet connection type:Static IP
and filled the info with my provider config.(Public IP addr,Subnet mask, DNS)

*Network setup
-Router IP with 192.168.0.253
-Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
and DHCP is enabled.

As result, Whether my PCs can get a valid IP adress from the router, I cannot surf the internet...

What have I forget to do?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Is there a WIRED router recommendations/ratings area here?

Hello, I tried searching around here and I didn't see any info about wired router ratings/recommendations. Can someone please point me to that area if it exists?

If not, here's what I needed to know: Due to now two of the ports on my current router failing (Motorola BR700) I need to get a new one. I actually need 5 ports, but 4-port is acceptable since I've never seen a 5-port and 8-port routers seem to be rare.

From what I can see, routers are no different from other hardware--way too many negative reviews. I checked wired router user reviews at NewEgg and the best one had 23 DOA/lowest ratings possible. Although due to the numbers that comes out to only 5%, that's still something to consider. That one was the DGL-4100. The others had at the very least 10%+ lowest ratings possible.

Reviews are the same at Cnet, every one with a decent amount of reviews has just too many negative reviews.

So I'm hoping someone could please recommend one that is reliable, and fast. Reliability comes first, I can't tolerate dropped connections and outages. But total reliability is meaningless if it's too slow. I want the throughput/speeds to be the same as though a router was not being used, no kind of bottleneck or router-induced slowness.

I have been experiencing sudden intermittent "internet breaks" that are caused by no apparent reason. The net will just totally die, any attempt at any link will result in either nothing happening and the page never loading, or the typical "The page cannot be displayed". What is strange is during this time email is fine! And I see no alerts about the net being down or anything unplugged. So I'm hoping that is router-related. These outages usually last about 1-3 minutes.

I'm on 6Mb DSL from BellSouth and use a Westell 6100 (B90-610030-06) modem. It has the "latest" firmware but it's still old. The connection is pretty fast, sometimes I can get actual download speeds of almost 4MB/sec (that's byte, not bit)....when it works. I don't do any kind of online gaming if that matters. But of course I still don't want any long router-induced-latency problems. I also don't do any kind of web serving and a printer server is not needed.

The router would be used for 3 PC's and two TV's (reason I need 5-ports), but I could leave one of the TV's cables disconnected until needed.

I also have a DI-704 router somewhere, but haven't been able to find it. If new wired routers don't offer any more reliability or benefits over that one, then there's no point in me looking at new ones, and I'll just have to find it.

I appreciate any info, thanks. ;)

Router advice - Airport Extreme and Linksys WRT54G

All,

I'd like to add N wireless and have an Apple Airport Extreme. I also have a Linksys WRT54G that has been serving me well. I need more direct LAN connections than is on the Airport Extreme. I can put the Linksys into Router mode, turn off wireless, and link them together. Question is one of performance. Is there any major difference going LAN - LAN connection (same IP Segement) vs. connecting LAN (AE) to WAN (Linksys) and keeping them separate? If I go LAN port to LAN port, I also give up a usable port. Thoughts..

Tired of cheap routers. Firewall box or ICS?

After a year of solid performance and thinking I had found the one my router is acting up. I'm tired of buying these disposable devices. I've been browsing the net looking at reviews etc. and I've come to the conclusion that they are not worth the trouble until they can start building them better.

Right now I'm debating on building a cheap pc with one of the firewall solutions or just using my main computer to share the connection.

I currently have a switch in the living room for all my networked ht gear. I was planning to buy a additional switch and network card for my main pc so I can plug in the switch in the living room and whatever else I need. Also adding in a wireless card.

Using the pc to share seems like a small trade off from having a connection that goes down all the time. The separate box sounds nice but wouldn't that be a power hog even if you are able to minimize things? I'm not even sure where I would put it.

thanks
