[Rant] After all these years, IE is still a clunker

Running IE9, on an i5 machine right now, and it is still a clunky experience.

Sadly, I must use it for certain things that just don't work correctly in other browsers (specifically - Sharepoint, which could be another rant...). Personally, I use Firefox most times because I like some of the add-ons, and I'm not yet totally sold on Chrome.

Why must it take so long to spawn a tab? Why must it choke and puke on itself randomly after having 2+ tabs and respond as though I'm asking it to copy a gigabyte of data, or solve PI to a billion digits?
...It's. A. F*cking. Browser...

Even on my quad-core at home, with more RAM, it's still not as smooth as one would expect. More than a few tabs, and you'd think the whole thing might fly apart at the seams, exploding on your screen like a zombie that got shot in the head.

And what's with having TWO "iexplore.exe" processes for *ONE TAB*??? Does it need the other one to watch out for itself, just in case it starts acting schizo? Open a few extra tabs, and it's like "Malkovich Malkovich" / "Microsoft Microsoft" - it starts peering inside its own mind and freaks out.

It's also total bullshit that IE can not be fully/easily uninstalled (At least the Europeans got a small win on that front).

After all these years, IE still sucks.
/end rant.

[RANT] & [RAVE] Wal Mart tries to reject valid coupon...

So, I'm in Wal Mart... So, things suck already. But, I've got a $1 off for any Cabot Creamery product. I love their cheese, and it's not super cheap, so I'm happy to have the coupon.

Well, I was happy... That is until I get to the checkout lane and unload all my stuff. Clerk scans everything and starts to deduct the 3-4 coupons I have. They're all for $1.00 up to $2.50 off. We get to the Cabot coupon and the clerk balks. She says she has to check on it since it's a "photo-copy". Well, it's not a photo-copy, it's printed from a java applet online. But, no problem...

So, the assistant manager is right behind my clerk, checking on something else. She leaves and has to turn right back around, so she's got a 'tude from jump. :D That's OK with me, 'cause I've got a 'tude too. :p

She looks the coupon over... BTW, she looks like something you prop up in a field to scare away pests... She looks the coupon over and says, "Um, no. It doesn't say 'Manufacturer's Coupon'... Blah, blah, blah..." I say, it's printed out from the internet. It's 2012. You go online and print these out. Incredulous.

So, I'm starting to get wound up, because there is a guy and his little boy waiting patiently behind me. Also, I'm getting pissed off at what I perceive to be an insinuation that I'm somehow trying to perpetrate a fraud, over $1. :uhh:

So, she says NO. I wiggle my right index finger at her little yellow smiley face badge and say, "So, you're the manger?"

She says, "Yes."

I then say, "Is there someone above you?"

Her: "Yes, another manager."

Me: "Are they here?"

Her: "Yes."

Me: "I'd like to speak with them, please."

I'm not going anywhere. I'm getting my damn dollar off if I have to stand there, right through the Superbowl. :D

So, she calls her Super, and after another minute, one of about 7 or 8, but feeling like 20. She tells the clerk to cancel out the item and manually enter it with a dollar off. She says to me, "And you can keep your coupon." Smarmy, ugly, ^%&##$*.

So, we're done with that. And, good thing she got it right, 'cause I was willing to get arrested. Yeah, over $1. I'm nuts.

Lastly, I had purchased beer and the original clerk needed my ID. I give it to her, and as she's handing it back to me, she notices I've got black electrical tape over the bar-code on the back. I started doing that after a thread here complaining about Target scanning Licences for no good reason. I don't allow my ID to be scanned by anyone but a LEO. The clerk is getting ready to question me about the black tape, but thinks twice after what we just went through and she decides to keep her curiosity to herself. :D

So, there. :D

[Rant] Non hot-pluggable laptop dock? Seriously?!?!?

http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook-accessories/cf-veb522m.asp

The instructions for this thing specifically say that the laptop must be SHUT DOWN completely prior to docking or undocking the laptop!

This completely defeats the purpose of having a docking station in the first place! I can plug/unplug all the USB/LAN/VGA cables faster than the time it takes to shut down or start up the computer.

Who is the moron that designed this thing?

[Rant] People that don't want their picture taken in PUBLIC

Honestly, I have seen so many people whine and complain that they should have some privacy in public. I take pictures of businesses, people, cars, and a lot of other things and people come up and say, "stop taking pictures of me". Well, your in public. There is no expectation of privacy in public. I do not anybody's permission to take pictures of them, their car, or their business in public. I do not take pictures of anything on private property. There is a reason it is called, Public, because things are not Private, like your picture.

[Praise] WDC Enterprise drives

I bought 2 Western Digital 500GB drives back in 2007, and have been using them in a RAID setup in my main rig. Since I was using RAID, I made sure to get the YS version (WD5000ABYS) which are rated for RAID (RE2) and are Enterprise-class drives that have a 5-year warranty, which expires in June of this year.

Started having problems last month with my RAID array, and ultimately determined at least one of the drives was giving out. Contacted WDC tech support online, filed an RMA for both drives and sent them off. I shipped the old drives out on 1/26.

I wasn't sure whether I would get refurbished drives or not, but received two brand new WD5003ABYX's on 2/2. :) These are the latest version (RE4), and manufactured one month ago. Same capacity and spindle speed, but 4x more buffer (64MB) and faster transfer speed. And these store all 500GB on just a single platter, whereas the old drives used 3 or 4 platters. That means less heat, noise, and power draw.

So kudos to WDC for excellent warranty support, and kudos to me for getting Enterprise-class drives in the first place. :)

[Rant] Apple Ipods/Itunes

After messing with trying to get songs onto an Ipod at the last minute for a party for someone else, I realized how crappy Ipods and Itunes are.

A friend had music on itunes, but her computer had some virus crapware that was blocking loading USB devices. Thats what you get with people who do weird shit to their computers.
So I load Itunes on another computer and connect and it says you have reached your 5 computer limit and refused to connect the ipod.
I tried to manually put the song files on the ipod through my computer and the ipod would not read them.

I then tried a 3rd party program i found and it would not connect stating it could not talk with that version of the firmware.
WTF??? wasted an hour trying to mess with this stupid ipod.
I have several real mp3 players and all you have to do is plug them in and copy your files. They work without issues/problems.

Why would anyone pay more money for an Apple mp3 player that is prone to problems that normal/real mp3 players do not have??? I really hate apple after messing with this. I dont see how they can cost more than regular mp3 players.

[Rant] Billed for medical service over 1 year later!

Heres my rant!

My kids goes to doctor in May of 2010, blue cross doesnt pay, says not a covered service. Medical provider gets notified of this.

OVER 1 YEAR LATER I get a bill for $245.00 for the "uncovered service"

I believe Blue Cross made a mistake, or the provider made a mistake... So...

I appeal for a review and Blue Cross writes back that I have 180 days from the date of the adverse notice to appeal, after that 180 days they will not review.

Now my gripe is that this should have been paid, or the provider mis-coded it

But because of the provider did not notify me in a timely matter, I lost my appeal right. My last day to appeal would have been Nov 21,2010.

So Im telling them to screw off, its your fault for not notifying me!

What legal recourse do I have? I dont want to pay $240 for a service that would have been covered. I paid my $15 co-pay at the time of service and assumed all was well

[Rave] Just the FAX

When I recently had to replace a printer, the one I ended up with was a HP Officejet 4500 (non-wireless) for $60 which will suit my very basic printing needs just fine. It will scan & copy which I will use once in a while...and it will also fax. Since I still use a POTS phone, I set it up and knew that it worked but didn't figure I would use it much. How wrong I was.

A few weeks later, our mortgage company wanted a new copy of our home insurance policy. We could send it via snail mail...or fax it. Got it done that day.

After that, had a nephew transferring from one college to another and was filing for financial aid. He filled out all the documents he was told to but then...SURPRISE!...weeks later he's told to send additional documents NOW if he wants his application processed. Best way to do it NOW? The fax.

After that, two different friends are filing for financial aid for their medical bills. Thousands of dollars at stake. Do you really want to send all that paper by USPS/UPS and hope it doesn't get lost-damaged or mishandled by the addressee when it does arrive? Or do you want it to get directly into the hands of the people working on your case and get it done NOW and thus speed up the claims process? They chose the fax.

So...when I read all this babble about how old-style telephony is going to die and VOIP will rule the world, I wonder. None of these businesses wanted to receive an email with a file attached. They wanted a fax. With this setup, I can scan multiple pages into the computer, creating a seamless multi-page document and send it without having to worry about paper jams. And a quick phone call let me know that the receiving party got everything that he/she requested. No having to wait on snail mail, didn't have to take all that paper somewhere else and pay to have it sent. If I did the latter, I certainly would've spent $60 by now.

Don't know how things will change, but for now I'm glad fax is still around.

Am I not the only one who think these things absolutely suck? I'm often out walking after dark & absolutely hate the glare or being blinded by an oncoming vehicle from 20+ feet away! It's even worse when said vehicle is an SUV or truck w/ fogs on (even in clear weather!).

I've often felt like buying a high-powered LED flashlight (or maybe one of those old 1M-candlepower handheld spotlights) to give them a taste of their own medicine! Didn't someone say that one shouldn't get mad, he should get even?

[Rant] Wow AT&T Wireless..wow..

Hey guys, first time posting in this forum, just wanted to share my small useless story. Isn't a big deal to me but at the end of the day I still can't believe AT&T wireless would treat a customer like this.

Ive been a customer of AT&T wireless since 1996 back when they were Cingular wireless (or before they bought them out). I have two lines on a family share plan, one of them is mine that I use as a spare, and the other is used by my little cousin. Now, I only use around a hundred mins a month, but the cuz uses around 1300. We have a 1400 minute plan so it just about works out. Luckily, we have a feature called A List, that you can pick a few people and calls to those numbers are unlimited. So by using that feature my Cousin is barely making it to the limit of 1400 mins. Coincidentally, I'm not the one paying the bill, but just managing the account for us to use. Word comes down that the bill that is $110/mo which includes 200 SMS/mo is too expensive and that I should find a way to cut it down. I know that while cable companies, for example have ample competition and room to adjust prices, I also know that cell phone providers normally do not. I've dealt with a lot of them and never heard of a company giving a break for any reason. But I figure what the heck, I've been a 16 year customer (as it says in their computer) and they should be able to give me something. I call in and explain the situation about the high total bill cost, and our usage habits, and ask the guy on the phone to analyze our usage again on his side since the online usage site is friggin hard to sort out. He tells me that my cost for the plan I'm signed up for is 79.99...he tells me first that he can give me an unlimited plan for 60/mo per line. I said no because even though it's a better value, my purpose for calling in is to lower my bill a bit while keeping the same minutes, not to get a better value with a higher cost. Finally, he tells me he can give me an unlimited package for 69.99...10 bucks less a month. Hey, I was surprised I got THAT much, I'll take it...I made sure to ask him what my total bill was going to be, and if that includes my 5/mo texting plan. He says, I should pay right around 100/mo. Awesome. Two weeks later out of curiosity, I log into my account to see a $160 final bill waiting for auto payment. Upon checking the bill I see that he has signed me up for a 70/mo unlimited plan for my line, and a 60/unlimited plan for my cousins. Plus all the other charges and features. I call in to cancel and revert to my original plan, and guess what? No apologies for the mistake. No credit back for the two weeks of that unlimited plan and another surprise!....the A List feature that I had isn't offered anymore so she couldnt even put me back on it. So...I got the same price for even less minutes now. Wow. No matter what I said she wouldn't budge. I didn't and wouldn't ask for supervisors, I'd rather just cancel and go to another provider. I'm not upset Im just shocked that AT&T would treat such a longtime customer this way.

This rant forum is awesome. I feel so much better now :)

Cheers

-Shawn
