[Rant] MPG on US cars

The last car I owned, a 2001 Toyota Camry XLE... It got an easy 30+ mpg on the highway. It had one of those computers built in, that showed the constant mpg you were getting, or average, etc.

Anyway, it frequently was showing 33-35 as the average.

I see plenty of commercials for cars today, bragging they get 30-33mpg and this is 2013.

Whats the deal man. Do people forget that cars have been getting these numbers for YEARS?!

Sellers that lie about shipping method

First I will say, I like Ebay. This is a rant about sellers who lie about the way they ship their items. I bought an item last week which specifically stated via USPS Priority Mail. It came by First Class Mail. What's the big deal? Extra 1 to 2 days, and I am paying for Priority but getting First Class, so the seller pockets the difference. It's not good customer service and it is border line fraud.

Had Uverse installed yesterday and they had to run a cable from the neighbors back yard into our telephone box on the side of the house.

Installer said it may take 3-4 business days for someone to come bury the cable. Came home from running errands this afternoon and found the contractors (I am assuming) burying the cable. Didn't take 3-4 days like the installer said.

So far so good with AT&T customer service, now let's see if this keeps up down the road.

How many times....

.... does something have to happen, before it shows up on a product label....?

I was looking at my 2L bottle of diet coke, and right there on the label it says "No refills"

I mean, wtf, LOL, etc etc...

Who in their right mind would take the empty 2L back to the store and expect a refill?

And like the question says, how many times did this actually happen, that they decided it better go on the label..

[Rant] International postage prices

Every now and then I will send a CD or LP to one of my friends in Europe as a gift. One or two CDs in a lightweight bubble mailer used to cost maybe $4-5. Been doing this for many years.

I just mailed one to Holland for the first time since they changed the postage prices in January and they charged me $12.75! To mail one $13 CD! :o I asked her to double and triple check and she said that was the correct price. It was only 4.4 ounces. I mailed a second package which contained a CD and a T-shirt stuffed into a Ziploc bag inside a big envelope, also going to Europe, and that cost $14.90. So... only 17% more for a much bigger envelope that weighed more than twice as much? I really don't understand how this is supposed to make sense

P.S. Anyone who makes the predictable "people still buy CDs?" comment gets smacked upside the head for being so bad at trolling :p

[Rant] Straight Talk Refill Cards/Walmart

My son has a Straight Talk phone. Works fine for his needs. However, it's really dang annoying that everytime we go to buy a minutes card at WallyWorld, they are ALWAYS out of the Unlimited everything cards. We always have to either go to another WallyWorld or go back another time. Which isn't always convenient.

Went there today, they literally had ONLY 2 refill cards for $30, for 1000 minutes/1000 txts/30MG data. That was it on the entire rack. 2 refill cards.

Really? Why can't they keep these stocked since you can't buy them anywhere else? Yes, I know we can do it online, but he doesn't have a CC/debit card and I don't always feel like laying out the money. We should be able to walk into the store and buy a refill card w/cash. Getting ready to ditch Straight Talk and go with Boost.

Stupid WallyWorld.

[Rant] Scammer phone calls

I just got a call from "American Credit Exchange" trying to get me to give them personal information by saying I have something in collections. Smells like scammers bigtime. They won't tell me who the supposed debtor is, unless I give them personal information. Then they said they can't tell me because of HIPAA laws (except those apply to medical records, not credit/collections).

What they don't know is I just closed on my new house, and I've seen a very recent credit report. My credit score is in the mid 700s and I have nothing late, past due or in collections.

They're definitely annoying.

[Rant] Ebay Users and Gift Cards

I was buying some things from amazon and I decided to look at ebay to see about getting some free money by buying a gift card for less than face value.

Well it looks like ebay buyers are really stupid.
$50 gift card sells for $52 with 14 bids
$5 gift card sells for $15.50 with 10 bids
$25 gift card sold for $27.

If you let people bid for the gift cards you will get more than face value.
There is only one good deal and that is a $500 gift card with a buy it now for $480 so you make $20 in the deal.

I just dont get what is wrong with people to spend more on a gift card than what it is worth. Stupid people have ruined ebay.

[Rant] The US Patent and Trademark Office is messed up!

We know that the patent and trademark office is messed up.

What made me really think it was messed up was when I was in a restaurant today and I saw a poster on the wall for an advertisement that they had for a product featuring an ice cream cone. On the ice cream cone there was the phrase "Eat-It-All".

OK, so I looked at it and shrugged my shoulders until I read at the bottom of the poster that the phrase "Eat-It-All" was a registered trademark of Kelloggs company. Seriously? That's trademarked!? It's just three words! What crackpot granted that trademark!? Damn, the patent and trademark office is seriously messed up!

[Rant] Cell phone companies / websites

Just trying to shop for a new carrier / plan. Myself (1 smartphone) and parents (they're on my plan, and use basic phones). When did it become such a mess?

Can't navigate Verizon's site to browse for phone + plan with any ease. Select phone, oh wait, I forgot you wanted to select that phone after I ask for your zip code.. Select two basic phones to start with, add to cart ...what cart? Here's some other sub-site full of dysfunctional shit. Can't price anything out without signing up? What the fucking fuck is that? Who lets this stuff pass as "ready to launch?"

Sprint - looks like a total mess there too. Discount this, discount that, everything is bright fucking yellow and reminds me of some bad "Always Save" land of misery, add everything up, you're still hosed.
U.S. Cellular (my current carrier) - you never need a contract again, oh, yes, fuck you ... actually, you do. Oh, and good luck with 4G LTE roaming, probably not happening, and you're only allowed 300MB of data on other towers, so what's the point of sticking with them if I upgrade? I've been with them for years, and they barely seem to give me a reason to stay with them anymore.

Basic phones for the parents? Only Verizon seems to have an LG flip phone that'd compare to what they currently have. Every other carrier has a wonderfully shitty selection. Data plans? Only sprint has unlimited, otherwise I'm paying out the nose for 4GB+ with anyone else. I do use right over 2GB/mo. on average, and the carriers know that this is the "haha, we got you, you pay us now" spot.

Note that I'm not considering any GSM carriers (AT&T-Mo) - their reception in the area is crap, and I am not a fan of either.

In the Deathstar's defense, their site was relatively easy to navigate, and their plans appear reasonable. T-Mo's site was somewhat easy, but offered total crap basic phones.

How is it that 'smaller' outfits like "consumer cellular" (the very name of this wants to make me gag) can offer a decent Moto flip phone, with fair pricing, but it's such a pain in the ass to find something even close on other carriers any more?

What the hell happened to cell phone carriers turning into data plan foisting pimps with impossible websites, plans that make no sense, and a basic phone selection as bleak as the surface of Mars?

[Rant] Samsung LCD TV

Back about 6 years ago I bought a Samsung 40" LCD 1080i 60hrtz which cost me about $1,400.00 back then. Year later after warranty went out, the capacitors go bad and my LCD died.

Come to learn they put the wrong ones in, go figure, nice job Samsung.

So as a few more years pass they finally decide there going to offer free service because of a class action lawsuit against them.

The service tech came to my house and after almost 3 years of no use I finally have a working Samsung LCD, well at least I thought I did.

Few weeks of using it, I noticed a strange smudge on the right side of my screen. As I did some research, I heard LCD's made back in the days the liquid used inside of the screen has issues.

Again I am back to square one. Spending $1,400.00, twice as much as you can get now with 120hrtz and a 1080p and not even getting a full use out of it, I feel ripped off by Samsung.

They want to charge me for a service call, really? you think right.

I wouldn't spend a dime getting it fixed and buy any Samsung product again.

While some love or like Samsung, you can't deny the fact that if this happened to you, you wouldn't feel the same.

Maybe if Samsung made good and done something for me, then I would consider supporting them.

I don't want anything for free, and I don't expect anything for free, however, after spending twice as much and not even getting full use, unacceptable to me.

My next LCD will not be a Samsung, in fact it will be a Sony which I have and never ever had an issue with.

Veterans and Kmart

A email I sent to KMART:
Sirs
I’m writing to get a clarification of Kmarts policy toward disabled customers A fellow DAV member arrived at your Hiram GA location this afternoon stopping just outside the front entrance.
When his wife entered the store to retrieve one of the power chairs an extremely rude employee refused to allow her to take the unit to her husband, stating she could not take the chair to him a distance of about
20 feet.
Is it your policy that people without the ability to walk get inside your stores the best way they can before getting a handicap chair?
Awaiting your reply,
Gary Mattingly
A fellow Disabled American Veteran

------------------------------------------------------
I waited 5 days and sent this:

Well, it’s been 5 days since a Disabled American Veteran was not allowed to take a Kmart power chair outside of their store in Hiram GA. And, I have not received a reply from them concerning their company’s policy on the use of the chairs.
One question I have … if a handicap person does manage to get inside the store to use one of the electric power carts and can’t take it outside the store how can they get their purchases’ to their car?
All I’m asking for is a clear definition of Kmart’s policy, so I can share same with my fellow DAV and VFW members.

----------------------------------------------------

I finally got a call from Sears Holding and long story short … I was told tough beads … that is Kmarts policy!
