Automatic rollover to unlimited plan. How does this work?

EDIT AGAIN:

*** Pricing and usage overage FAQ ***

EDIT

Questions have been tentatively answered by TSI:

---

Q - If someone surpasses their cap (combined past 2 months) will they be changed to the unlimited plan?

A - YES

Eug's note: It seems as if the FAQ contradicts this.

We will not automatically convert our customer’s package to the unlimited selection however we strongly recommend that if they continuously exceed the allotted amount that the account be transitioned to an unlimited package.

---

Q - When would they start paying the unlimited price?

A - They will pay the difference for the new unlimited price 30 days after they are notified they were over. Notification of overage and the extra charge will be explained on their invoice.

---

Q - Do they have to pay to go back to the 300 GB capped plan? If so how much?

A - No, as long as they do not switch the speed they are in.

---

Q - One big question I have though is if this is retroactive. For example, if you were slightly over in December and January, does that mean you are switched to unlimited in February?

A - The calculations start Feb 2 and we can start charging beginning April 1

---

Q - Is this true in the west?

A - This does not apply for the West

---

Q - Does this mean if someone rolls over to unlimited, they are unlimited for just those months, or is that someone permanently unlimited?

A - People should automatically be rolled back to their original package after they have been charged the unlimited price.

---

Q - How are usage overages billed for those on the 2 Mbps DSL plan?

A - I have been in contact with our Billing department. Since this is a new plan they are currently working on how the usage billing will work with it. Once they have a definite answer they will ensure that it is posted out there on the forum for all. Please do keep an eye on the forum for further updates.

-----

Original post is below:

-----

This is the from the new billing page.

said by TSI :2 Month Rolling Average

TekSavvy will manage usage based on a rolling 2 month average.

Rolling average is defined as usage during peak hours. (Outside of the 2am-8am off-peak time)

How the Rolling average works.

Every month, we will average the usage for the two previous months. If the average exceeds the Customer’s cap, we will automatically roll them over to the unlimited plan. Our customers will be notified when this rollover happens.

Does this mean if someone rolls over to unlimited, they are unlimited for just those months, or is that someone permanently unlimited?

Is this new rule retroactive? IOW, if the person was over the 300 GB monthly usage limit in December and January, are they rolled over, or does it only apply from February on?

I see that the TSI usage tool only records off-peak times from January on. The amount used in off-peak times isn't recorded for December. Everything in December seems to be counted as being during regular hours.

[Cable] Any Word on Dupont POI UpGrade Plans?

Was wondering if there are any updates regarding the Dupont POI plans. It does seem congested at times. Got any statistics and/or demographic's on how many we're serving?

I also wonder about the Teksavvy speedtest calibration http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1, a lot of the times I'm getting on average 12 - 16 Mbps, seldom in the 24Mbps ballpark on the extreme pro, sigh.

[DSL] Changed from Unlimited to 300GB, charged $5 fee :(

So last month I called to change my Unlimited DSL to 300GB, in light of the capacity billing changes. It didn't take long and I was told everything would be changed for my next billing period, I usually get the bill on the 4/5th of each month.

So forward to today, I still haven't received the PDF invoice/receipt, (It's Feb 7th), but I just happened to log into my online banking to check for something else, and I saw my visa bill and the charge for DSL service was way too high than it should have been after I made the change...

So I call in to accounting to find out what's the problem, and the lady said I was charged a $5 account fee. I said, aren't you guys waiving that because of the price plan changes, there was a TSI document posted on the forum that until March 2nd, changes from Unlimited to 300GB and vice versa will have the $5 account fee waived. The lady said she was sure that they haven't been told that. I said, can you check with someone, because I'm sure I saw it on the forums I just cant find it right now... She said no and that's she is sure.

So no point in arguing with someone that didn't want to inquire on my behalf, I said I'll call back if I find the relevant info. Well, I found it.

From page 3 of the document
quote:3.11. What if an existing customer would like to change to another package, will they be charged a fee?
* Existing customers will have the opportunity to change their package between the 300GB and Unlimited tier at no charge providing the change has been made by March 2nd, 2012.
* Changing Bandwidth tiers, such as going from 300GB to Unlimited or vice versa will be subject to a $5.00 change of service fee after March 2nd, 2012.

So which is it, TekSavvy? Why have you charged me a fee that you said would be waived if the account changes were made until March 2nd? The CSR that I originally spoke to on January 5th or so, never mentioned this fee either. I haven't received the PDF invoice/receipt either.

This is the first time I've ever called in for any sort of support or major account changes in 4+ years, and you managed to foul it up. :(

16MB install experience

Had my upgrade from 6Mbit to 16Mbit scheduled today. I was told 2 techs were supposed to show up between noon and 9pm. To my surprise at 7AM my new service was already activated without anyone showing up. Not sure if anyone will eventually show up, but everything seems to be working. So to be charged 95$ for a profile change is disappointing. But over all I am happy.

Here are my line stats. Should I be synching at higher speeds ?

capsavvy needs an update to support off peak

capsavvy needs an update to support the new off peak usage. looks like it's showing off peak upload as total and as a result estimated usage is understandably affected.

the plus side is i'm on pace for only 15gb usage this month!

edit - further to this it would be cool to see a total for peak usage as the teksavvy site only shows total usage which forces you to calculate total peak usage. which sucks cause peak usage is all you REALLY have to worry about.

edit 2 - also weird that teksavvy page shows a note about usage not including the current day when clearly it does if i have off peak usage and that only started today... i seem to recall it being something like a 4 hour delay. maybe they just put current day to cover their butts.

Question About Phone Wiring

I live in an apartment building built in the early 80s so the phone wiring in here isn't great. I have done my best to clean up the jacks and wires and I have seen some improvement in my stats.

However, I just had one question about the wiring in here. Most of the jacks are wired in normal fashion i.e. red to red, green to green etc.

There is one jack in the living room that is different than the others - it has the red, green, black and yellow wires, but it also has three extra really thin, greyish wires which i have no clue what they do (also very difficult to strip). If I don't connect two of the thin wires to anything the phone line goes dead. At the moment I have one thin wire connected to the red wire coupling, and the other thin wire to the green wire coupling. The third thin wire isn't connected to anything.

My guess is these are some kind of power wires and the third being a ground?

The line is working fine at the moment, but maybe if someone has any insight on the function of these three wires, and if there is a way to connect them properly to improve line quality.

Teksavvy New Pricing FAQ !

Recently, there has been a rather comprehensive FAQ issued by TSI.

It clears up most of the questions being asked during the past few days, and some from before, except about when other services will be rolled out, though they said 'soon' regarding some.

They do not seem to have announced this FAQ here yet, but someone noticed and posted this on page 5 of another thread.

I feel that this needed its own thread, so that nobody in this forum can miss it.

Here is the direct link :

http://teksavvy.com/en/Pricing%20FAQ%20Feb%203%202012.pdf

There are also links to this PDF file from SOME pages of the Teksavvy web site.

Hopefully, they will add more and larger links there.

DSL Upgrade warning / advisory

DSL Upgrade warning / advisory

I have been a Teksavvy customer for a long time, and was VERY happy when I was finally free of Bell. Bell set the bar so low that almost anything was better. Unfortunately, Teksavvy’s bar is moving closer and closer to Bell.

I have been trying to upgrade my DSL service from 5/1 to 16/1.
This was all set for Tuesday Jan 10. I had to be at home from 12 Noon to 9 PM to let the 2 technicians into my house. Of course, my old DSL service was disconnected, and neither technician showed up.

Over an hour on the phone with Teksavvy. First rep kept saying “how odd” that you don’t have service. Then she discovered I shouldn’t even be having any service!!! What? Time to speak to her supervisor. Seems Teksavvy put the order to cancel my 5/1 “immediately” instead of when the upgrade was supposed to happen. Wonderful. I am offered Dial-up in the meantime, but had to wait on hold for 15 minutes while an account was set up for me. Total time in phone was over an hour.

New appointment set for today, Friday. I needed to be home again from 12 Noon until 9 PM. Guess what? Another no-show!!!

I just got off the phone again with customer service. Rep was very nice and apologetic. But they have to get hold of Bell again (24 hour window) and then schedule another (the third) appointment for me to wait at home hoping a tech will turn up.

I am still hopeful that one day, a tech will actually arrive. But how many wasted days waiting? And how many wasted hours trying to reach the right person at Teksavvy?

Teksavvy at least admitted partial blame. And I’m sure Bell is also to blame. But is the answer to go back to Bell for an upgrade, and then move back to Teksavvy when the Bell contract is done?

[DSL] The REAL cost of upgrading to 25/7

In the interest of transparency, let me give a real-world example for you all of what I'm paying to upgrade my 5/.6/300 DSL service to 25/7/300, why those charges are incurred, and why that is wrong.

SWITCH-OVER COSTS
$95.00 activation fee
$19.99 dryloop activation fee
$52.99 + $9.10 + 4.00 + 8.00 for 1 month prepayment
13% taxes
TOTAL: $213.66

MONTHLY COSTS
$52.99 for 25/7/300 service
$8.00 for modem rental
$9.10 for Band B dryloop
$4.00 for MLPPP + Static IP
13% taxes
TOTAL: $83.72 / month

Okay, that's the example. What's wrong, you say?

#1: modem rental
After double-checking with two CSRs and one tech on three separate occasions in the month of January that the monthly charge of $52.99 / month was indeed correct, and that $9.10 for dryloop and $4 for MLPPP + Static IP was all I'd have to pay in addition (well, plus taxes) when switching my service on Feb 2nd, suddenly at point of order I was informed there was also a mandatory $8/month modem rental fee.

Teksavvy's excuse is that this charge is enforced upon them by Bell and that they also were not aware of it until Feb 2nd. That's fair, right? I mean, I still went ahead and did the switch. My choice.

Except when talking to those two CSRs on those two occasions in January, they both informed me they could/would not process my order, despite the plan being available at that time, albeit at a somewhat higher cost (which would be automatically reduced come Feb 2nd). It would be a smoother transition and financially beneficial for me, I was told, if I waited until Feb 2nd to order it.

It may be the conspiracy theorist in me, but I don't follow why two CSRs would refuse to take my order in the month of January unless they were fully aware that if they could make me wait for a few more days, they could squeeze another 15% profit out of my account.

FYI, no you cannot Bring Your Own Device (or at least, you cannot send back your old modem and have your monthly rentals waived). This is the case even if you can somehow acquire an identical modem, configure it to work with the service, and return your old modem. This monthly charge is recurring, permanent, and forever, and seemingly has nothing to do with the actual cost or use of the equipment. This may lead one to believe that it is, in fact, a charge which should be built into the advertised cost of the plan and not split out into its own line item.

#2: activation fee
This is a tie-in with the modem rental charge. Prior to Feb 2nd, we were told that the then-$99 activation charge was charged by Bell and included a new modem. This corresponds with Bell's one-time rental fee of $100 for the same modem on their own plan. It also corresponds with the fact that grandfathered clients are not charged a modem rental fee, since that cost is already paid.

But the post-Feb 2nd activation fee of $95 does not include a modem. For details on what it includes, see #4.

#3: dryloop activation fee
I questioned why I was charged $19.99 for activation of my dryloop, which I'd already paid for once when I signed up for my 5Mb plan - it's "active" already! But, it turns out, a Bell tech has to switch my line card and assign me a new dryloop # for the new VDSL2 service.

Okay, that sort of makes sense, although it wasn't mentioned anywhere that this would be the case. It was explained to me that anything 10Mbps or over is treated as a totally different product from 2Mbps or 5Mbps DSL, so the fact that I'm an existing client has no bearing on the cost. One might think that a mature company would eat this $20 charge for existing clients - think of it as "advance retention", if you must - but this is evidently not Teksavvy's policy.

(oddly, this is apparently not the case for those switching from 10+ Mbps packages to 5- Mbps packages - they only pay a $25 "speed change fee" despite the switch still being from a different product category altogether, and the line card switch cost would presumably still be incurred by TSI)

But:

#4: activation fee again
So if the service activation fee, which at $95 is suspiciously similar to the former activation fee of $99 which included the modem, does not in fact include a modem, what does it cover?

I was told it covers two things:
1. A Bell technician to change the line card
2. A Telecon technician to install a POTS splitter

$95 for two techs to come out and do installs? That sounds like a deal, right?

However, the perceptive individual will note that I'm already paying $19.99 for the line card to be switched, in the dryloop activation cost above. Since the cost for activating the dryloop is the same whether you are on legacy or 10+Mbps DSL, and that's all the Bell tech is doing, it would appear that the $95 installation charge only covers the Telecon tech to install the POTS splitter.

Now, the extra perceptive among you will note that if I'm paying for a dryloop - which by definition means I do not use "Plain Old Telephone Service" - why would I even need a POTS splitter?

"Well", you say, "VDLS2 requires an RJ45 connection from the demarcation point to the modem, not an RJ11 which is what you have now - that's why you need the special VDSL2 POTS splitter".

But this is not actually the case, because according to any ISP (Bell and TSI explicitly included), their responsibility ends at the demarc point. You'll know this if you've ever complained about poor service and a tech comes out to do a line test - they'll do it at the demarc point, and if the line is clear there, they'll toss you a bill and say "not our problem".

So I offered to crimp my own RJ45 cable from the demarc to the modem (as it happened, I have a Cat6 cable with an RJ11 end hooked up already, to eliminate any potential issues with bad house wiring early in my DSL career), pay for the $19.99 dryloop activation fee, and have the $95 activation fee waived since it offers me no benefit. This was not acceptable to TSI, because "this is a charge incurred by Bell, not by us".

IMPORTANT EDIT: Everything I've written above about RJ45 is wrong. VDSL2 modems do not use RJ45 connections, it's still the same kind of twisted copper pair as ADSL and uses RJ11 connections. So a POTS splitter installed in the home appears even more useless for dryloop customers; it appears that I could just plug in my existing wire from the demarc to the modem as-is. If anyone has any info surrounding why Telecon's POTS splitter installation service would be required for Teksavvy's 25/7/300 VDSL service, please let me know in the comments below.

IN SUMMARY
If you're existing 5Mb DSL dryloop customer, understand that the activation cost for your upgrade will be higher than the $95 listed, and that very little value will be produced for you in exchange for your money spent. Understand further that your mandatory fee (with no options or dryloop fee included) for 25/7/300 service is $60.99 + taxes / month, not $52.99 / month, due to the additional modem rental.

Also note that my concerns have been "forwarded to management" for further clarification. If any of my interpretations and speculations above are proven incorrect as a result, I will be sure to let you know.

[Cable] Occasional Cable Modem Disconnection issue

Hi Guys,
Has anyone encountered an issue I am having? Occasionally, I would lose inet for a few seconds. This happens several times per day 3-7 times that I notice. Most of the times I notice it I am playing World of Warcraft and suddenly I get disconnected. I am able to reconnect right away, though, but still, this presents an issue.

I remember I did discuss this issue with tech support, and it got as far as "Your modem resets/reboots itself". However, they asked me to perform some tasks or keep monitoring it and since I stopped playing WoW soon after, I abandoned resolving that issue.

My modem is: SB5101N surfboard cable modem

If anyone has any info on how to resolve this issue or how to troubleshoot this, please help me out. I don't even know how to login to my modem (I remember I did it once with the tech support guys).

Thank you!

I have been thinking of moving to cable for the either the 12 or 25mb plan now, how many have you done this and how do you like the end results? Is day to day life surfing, netflix streaming and the odd torrent any better for you? Do you get less buffering issues with netflix? Does the speed drop in the evening hours when people get home form work?
Can you download a 2gb torrent 3x faster now?
Any recommendations to make the transition seamless in case rogers drops the ball...

Removal of Throttling + modem & wireless set up question

I wonder if the wise ones on the forum can help me out.

Background -
I am setup with an Asus modem (set up in bridge mode) connected to a microtik router (where SLPPP set up) which i've linked up to a TPLink wireless router.

My profile - 5/.80 through Bell line

Why the Microtik - long story short - it was the best option from TSI at the time (yes, i now know they use it for commercial customers - so overkill for residential customers - should have pushed for non-commercial but it was after almost 3 weeks of phone calls etc)

Things were working well since july last year till now.

problem -
3 days back, somehow (at TSI), login name got reset and i had to re-input login for Modem (which worked fine). However, since TSI set up the Microtik, i don't know the login & password and now can't use the microtik router*. Now, i can only connect directly to modem and do the login.
* the old password & username i have should work but it does not.

Questions -
a) Has Bell has stopped throttling speeds?
b) If i remove bridge mode from Asus modem & connect directly to TPLink wireless router = bypassing the microtik, i would still be able to do my downloads, net flix streaming without any issues? Is this correct?

c) any other suggestions are appreciated.

TekSavvy Express Cable 12 : Ottawa ?

I'm gearing-up to get the Teksavvy Cable 12.
Anyone got the teksavvy Cable 12 , or higher, in Ottawa ?
I'm in Vanier area.
I'm just wondering how your speeds, stability, advice, ... are. ?

I've been with DSL(6-Meg from another provider) for 4 years now, however, in a looong discussion with teksavvy Sales, the $12 I save by going to Cable 12 (will now help get my VOIP too).
I'm aware that (historically) Cable can "suck" when it comes to congested areas,..., let alone the fact that Ottawa itself, is not highly-rated when it comes to Internet speed/quality.

One thing I do NOT like, is that :
Cable-12's up = 512kb - :( ?
DSL-12's up = 1Mb - again, (historically) better.

So, I've almost decided, just need a freindly "push" from some (honeslty) happy taksavvy users'
:)

TY again, I appreciate any feedback

[DSL] Inconsistant DL Speed

Hi All,

After a few weeks of trouble shooting my dual mlppp setup (wiring related issues - which this board was instrumental in helping me solve) I seem to have everything linked up and working correctly.

I have however noticed that my Dl speeds seem to fluctuate pretty significantly throughout the day. 8Mbps DL at one point and 0.98Mbps D/L at others. Is this common for this kind of setup - and if not - where would you suggest I start looking for clues?

Thanks guys!

[DSL] Official 5Megs to 6Megs upgrade thread.

Hey folks.

Since the unofficial thread seems to be growing some attention, here's the word on what's going to happen for the Profile upgrades from 5Megs to 6Megs. This is not a price update thread, keep your questions or comment relevant please.

Officially the upgrades of profiles to 6Meg (don't forget it's "UP TO") aren't supposed to happen till Feb 2nd. Now some lines have an option to be optimized and we've been attempting to optimize the ones we see, which seem to be working properly.
If your line has the potential of getting it done, then we'll try to do so for you. But, if you line needs to be manually configured, we will be asking to wait till February 2nd.

Now here's the catch, please understand that this is not something you can check on your own. This needs to be verified by us. Seeing how everyone will want to know if they can get it, we ask you to also be patient with this.

There is no point in trying to call, email, & post on DSLR all at the same time to get your upgrade. Only 1 request will be necessary.

Thanks for your patience.

[DSL] Blindsided by Teksavvy! $8 modem rental fee!

Talk about a hit upside the head! I didn't see that one coming. Even over at Bhell the modem fee is a $99 *one time* fee, and is currently waived.

After many years with Teksavvy I just upgraded to 25/7 last month based on the 'proposed' new fee structure. I thought maybe the prices might be off a little, maybe a couple of bucks, hell maybe even less money. I originally was considering 16 meg but after careful consideration decided the additional $7 for 25/7 was a good deal. Now it's $15 a month more for 25meg over 16.

And what about the hidden fees for the lower tiers? What has happened to the Teksavvy I have been promoting to friends and relatives for years? To say I am discouraged is putting it mildly.

One question I have now is - what will it cost me to drop back to 16meg? The $25 change fee? Will I have to pay the $99 fee again? Or will I sit tight for now and see what other ISP's have to offer?

Speed Change: 6M to 16M DSL

Can anyone tell me why we would be changed twice for change of speed?

First they want to charge us 95$ to upgrade to change the speed to 16meg,
And then another 25$ to change again, the speed from 6M to 16M

I understand the first charge to send out a tech. But I don't understand the 2nd 25$ charge, Shouldn't that be included in the 95$ charge since your request to change the speed to begin with?

Will stay on 6M service since this is the case, disappointed with teksavvy.

[DSL] Good line condition, but high packets loss to gateway

My DSL internet connection is slow and unstable for a couple of days.

My modem is Speedtouch 546, it syncs at 6016 down and 800 up. SNRs are above 16db, no CRC errors. Line condition looks pretty good to me. However, when I ping the Teksavvy default gateway, packet loss ratio is 30 to 70%.

I tried to login with username test@test, and ping the 10.*.*.* gateway assigned to that test account, I also got high packet loss. So it is not Teksavvy server's problem.

I have tried replacing my Speedtouch modem with a new TP-Link modem, two different computers, and two phone jacks in different rooms. Still the same problem.

I have been using DSL service for 6 years without any phone line
problem. But it turned bad suddenly. I ask Bell to add call display/call waiting about a week ago, could it be relevant? Seem the only thing I can do is to ask a Bell technician to check my phone line. Is there anything else I can check?

SpeedTouch 780WL and 2 VOIP lines

I am thinking of getting a couple "tek-talk" voip lines with Teksavvy, but, ?

Can any "teksavvy" person tell me if, in fact, my Speedtouch 780WL (DSL/Voip-ATA/Router/Wireless/Combo...) can handle "2" unique VOIP lines. ?

What I mean is, (voip-wise) is, can I have a:
613-xxx-xxxx voip service/number on Phone1(fxsport1) jack on my 780WL
as well as a,
613-yyy-yyyy voip service/number on Phone2(fxsport2) jack on my 780WL

And no, I do NOT use the PSTN(analog)Pots port, on my 780WL, aka No analog Bell service, other than a plain Dry-Loop service that I pay monthly for.
BTW, I have been, as of up to now, sucessfully using a VOIP service/line on my existing "Phone1" port for the last 4 years.

If you need any other details, I will be glad to try to provide them for you.

Thanks all.
