[ALL] 2Wire 2700HG-E / Firewall / Security / SIP ALG option

What happens if this option is enabled?

What does it preclude not enabled?

I found a manual for a 2Wire 2701HG, which says ...... "The Advanced "Configure Services page (v5 firmware) allows you to enable the 2Wire gateway to operate in bridged mode, change the timeout settings for NAT, enable notification messages, enable the SIP ALG, and change the upstream maximum transmission rate."

My issue was that I installed an ATA device (OBi110) per the simple instructions, then my Telus 2700HG gateway moved the device into the DMZ mode with the consequence that DNS was rendered interoperable.

Being a neophyte in this subject area, I'm guessing that enabling SIP ALG might allow an VoIP device to function behind the firewall and hopefully not instigate a "router behind a router" error as I experienced.

I couldn't find any helpful DSLreports.

Advice please .........

World IPV6 Launch Day

Last June 8 was World IPv6 Day, where participating websites and ISPs enabled IPv6 to see what would happen. This June 12 will be World IPv6 Launch day, where participating websites and ISPs will enable IPV6 permanently.

As I've posted before, Telus has been almost completely silent on the topic of IPv6. They did participate to a degree in World IPv6 Day, but only for telus.com. There has been no news whatsoever about providing IPv6 connectivity to Telus broadband residential customers.

On http://www.worldipv6launch.org/faq/ there are links to two sites that can be used to test IPv6 connectivity. They are http://test-ipv6.com/ and http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/.

As a test, I am connecting my PC running Windows 7 to the internet directly through the ALU modem with no router.

The results of test-ipv6.com are the following:

Test with IPv4 DNS record
ok (0.041s) using ipv4
Test with IPv6 DNS record
ok (0.041s) using ipv6 6to4
Test with Dual Stack DNS record
ok (0.047s) using ipv4
Test for Dual Stack DNS and large packet
ok (0.048s) using ipv4
Test IPv4 without DNS
ok (0.047s) using ipv4
Test IPv6 without DNS
ok (0.043s) using ipv6 6to4
Test IPv6 large packet
ok (0.052s) using ipv6 6to4
Test if your ISP's DNS server uses IPv6
bad (0.054s)

Except for the Telus DNS, everything is okay.

The results from netalyzr are too long to post, but there is a notable failure (in addition to the DNS issue also reported by test-ipv6.com):

IPv6 Path MTU (?): Warning
Your system can not send or receive fragmented traffic over IPv6.
The path between your network and our system supports an MTU of at least 1280 bytes. The path between our system and your network has an MTU of 1450 bytes. The bottleneck is at IP address 2001:1900:5:1::229. The path between our system and your network does not appear to handle fragmented IPv6 traffic properly.

I'm curious if this is a result of the backbone or the ALU. I'm assuming the backbone, but I'd like to see if the result is the same for someone running another modem (probably in bridged mode).

I wish Telus would be more proactive with IPv6 like Comcast rather than being virtually silent on this topic.

I wonder if any of the Telus insiders can shed any light on this.

[AB] New Telus Actiontec V100h firmware broke my WoL setup

So Telus just pushed an upgrade out to my Actiontec V1000h modem/router, which disabled my method of getting WoL to work. I noticed that it all of a sudden stopped working (probably due to a reboot after the FW upgrade).

Nothing persists by default in the arp cache on the Actiontec, so when my computer is off, the router doesn't know where to send the magic packet. The way I used to get around this was to ssh into the router and add a static arp entry. This worked until the router rebooted, when I would have to add the static entry again.

Now, as seen in the changes below, they've disabled ssh and taken away my option of adding this static entry. I understand Telus not wanting people to muck around with the settings too much and screw up their custom QoS stuff, but this seems absurd. You pretty much cannot do any reasonable customization with this equipment.

. Changes in 31.30L.55:
o Updated HPNA driver . Improve noise resiliency, CG3210H 1.9.4 Nov 29 2010 16:11:18
o Updated DSL driver . Improve/Elimination of .No IP after-retrain defect., SRA fixed
o A2pv6C035f.d23i
o Sorrenson Video Relay service fixed
o Closed the Open DNS on WAN interface, randomized DNS source port
o HDM Periodic Inform . randomized
o Admin Password Reminder changed
o Hidden pages removed from admin user access
o Added Option 67 reply
o Closed Local SSH ability from LAN client to V1000H
o Upgraded SSL certificate

My question is: Has anybody come up with a way around some of these limitations? Should I buy the router outright from Telus and change the firmware somehow? Should I just complain to Telus until they provide me with a reasonable alternative?

[ALL] Telus controls personal medical records!!!

I just found out today that Telus is now into Electronic Medical Records (EMR) business in Canada. Thousands of patients in BC, Alberta, Ontario and other provinces now have their personal medical records housed and owned by Telus.

Due to Telus outsourcing to offshore companies, my physician told me that he is concerned about privacy and who at Telus has access to my health records. The clinic's electronic records are not stored at the clinic but at Telus' data centre, where ever that might be. My doctor offered to move my medical records back to paper if I was overly concerned. I guess since I am pregnant, I will now get telemarketers from Telus calling me to offer diaper services or similar.

Ask your family doc who has access to your electronic medical records. If the clinic uses Wolf Medical, your records are now controlled (and owned) by Telus.

Telus is notifying you if you download prohibited content

http://bit.ly/xy1eth

Entertainment and music industries in the U.S. are hoping that a "notice and notice" program which sends warnings about illegal downloading will deter internet users from sharing copyrighted material.

Telus says it passes on these notices, mainly from movie and software industries, to alert its Canadian customers that their IP addresses have been identified for potential copyright infringement.

Spokesman Shawn Hall says the company simply alerts customers of the allegations and does not provide personal information to the complainant. He maintains that many people are surprised to find out that copyrighted or illegally downloaded material is even on their computer.

"Sometimes we find that there's someone in the household who's maybe doing something that the account holder -- so Mom and Dad -- might not want to be happening," he told CTV's Steele on Your Side.

Sometimes customers learn they have an unprotected Wi-Fi network and one of their neighbours is illegally downloading, Hall said.

It could also be something more sinister: "Maybe they have a computer virus or other malware on there," he added.

A Steele on Your Side viewer named Andrew wrote in after saying that he'd received a notice from Telus alerting him that a copy of the movie ‘Thor' was detected on his laptop. He wondered if Telus was going to take action against him.

Telus maintains that it will not hand over personal information, such as user name, address or other confidential information, without a proper court warrant, but it does warn that producers can take legal action against consumers if they're illegally downloading copyrighted material.

There are also other risks associated with illegal downloading -- it's one of the most common ways to contract a computer virus or spyware.

Earlier this month, Shaw Cable said it would begin sending out notices to its internet customers about their illegal downloading. The move follows a request to the company from Warner Brothers Entertainment asking to remind its customers that copyright infringement is illegal.

Canadian internet users are tracked through their IP address when they download material.

More than 100,000 "notice and notice" alerts have been sent to Canadian internet users over the past five years. The program widely differs from the "notice and take-down" approach used in parts of the U.S., where many internet service providers are forced to remove the illegal content of their users.

[AB] Actiontek V1000h .55 Optik High Speed Turbo Port Forwarding

Hi everyone,

I have been frustrated with Telus for quite some time now but I am really trying to get the port forwarding to work now. Unfortunately I am on the Telus Optik TV with High Speed Turbo internet plan for another year or so on contract and they refuse to let me use my own router instead of theirs. I admit my naivety in terms of networking but I am an experienced computer service technician and know my way around a home or small business network, surely a simple port forward couldn't defeat me?

Well it appears that it has, I have tried running a web service on various ports(listen 80, 81, 8080, 777, 666 etc.) And every time I am able to access the service within the LAN but not from the WAN. I have attempted to port forward the individual ports, a range of ports around the port, and have placed the server system on a DMZ as well. Nothing seems to help. Now I have tried this with two different systems, my primary Windows 7 desktop and my spare Ubuntu server I have in a corner. I even went so far as to try the experiment again with an FTP server on different ports. I am aware that port 80 and port 21 should be blocked which is why I tried the different ports. Any further advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Litobro

Fighting spam

During my search for information on fighting spam, I ran across this proposal from the Anti-Spam Technical Alliance:
http://docs.yahoo.com/docs/pr/pdf/asta_soi.pdf
Although it was dated 2004, it is interesting to note that Telus has implemented most of it's recommendations. It recommends a multi-pronged approach, putting most of the onus on ISPs to control email content originating from their own networks. It has been effective, to the point that most spam now originates from Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America, where ISPs obviously don't control their own networks.

Telus Actiontec V1000H .55 Problems

I'm currently setting up a small office network with active directory and I need the client computers to use my domain server for DNS. I'd like to avoid double NAT routing and since telus has the DHCP server locked on, I need to use the V1000H as my router/DHCP server. This would be fine however the crippled telus firmware wont allow me to change the DHCP settings. I understand the device is fully capable of changing these settings but Telus has locked us out of changing them for some stupid reason.

If anyone can please pm the new root password for the .55 firmware, I will be able to get my domain working properly and I will be very grateful.

If you can think of any other solutions please share them with me.

Thanks!

Speed issue/Hardware upgrade reccomendations

I live in Penticton BC, have the telus high speed plan and noticed a few days ago my downstream speeds dropped from about 3.4mb to 1.4mb steady. I'm guessing my modem + switch combo is just too archaic to work well with some recent network upgrade. (linksys adls-me1, according to the label. prob 5+ years old) Does this seem like an ancient hardware problem to those in the know? Or is this issue something worth hassling telus about if it doesnt clear up in a week?

Since I need to new hardware for wireless networking with a new tablet I thought it would be time for a new router, however I have never used a router before, preferring modem/hub combos, and have never considered wireless till now. So I was hoping for some advice.

I'm hearing alot on the forums about the actiontech v1000h. I'm guessing this is the safe bet. Are there better routers available that will help with improving speed or is there no reason to look for anything other than this model?
