Time Warner Cable Vs DirecTV

I've been back with DirecTV now for about 36 hours and off the top of my head compiled a list of what I've noticed so far. Overall, I can't say I'm overly impresseed with DirecTV as a whole. There's a few bright spots, but I could never use them as my main source of TV. The grass isn't greener on the other side afterall.

Time Warner Receiver – Cisco Explorer 8642HDC running ODN 5.0.0_6
DirecTV Receiver – HR-34-700 running 0X4C9

DirecTV Cons/Time Warner Pros

- The DirecTV EPG is god-awful looking as it stands. I’d rather have Time Warner’s 4:3 graphics then DirecTV’s stretched graphics. I obviously do not have the HD GUI yet. And with how small the window is, at this point I’d rather not even have the video while the EPG is up.

-	Ads in the EPG. I HATE that DirecTV promotes content on the premium movie channels in the middle of the guide. I already have the movie channels, thank you very much.

-	While the On Demand channels are ‘prettier’ and more graphical, I like the way TW as them sorted by category, not to mention I think it’s totally retarded that you can’t surf through the On Demand channels with the channel up and down buttons, you need to use the red and the green. Also very little HD content On Demand.

- When channel surfing sometimes the screen blanks out for a second when going from an HD channel to an SD channel, and yes, native is off, everything is being converted to 1080i. Sometimes the banner will blink as well.

- The sports channels in the 600s are really hard to follow. Don't understand why CNN and CNN HD can both occupy channel 202 but MSG Alternate is 638 and the HD feed of that is 638-1.

- Not having nearest tune sucks.

- While Sonic Tap has a broader selection over Music Choice, the Music Choice interface is superior.

- While I appreciate being able to skip ahead and back in the guide 12 hours at a time using the red and green buttons, I like it better with TW's Navigator where you can just enter the number of hours you want to jump ahead and hit the right arrow.

- I harped on Time Warner for this. Overall lack of professional looking channel info. Many channels are missing channel logos or are using outdated logos, the EPG abbreviations, while more uniform then TW, still need work, and some need to be corrected. Showtime 3 has not been in existence for years. it's called Showtime Shocase.

-	Channel changing is SLOW compared to Navigator! And it bugs the hell out of me that the audio tunes before the video does

-	I wish the channel banner just displayed the channel info, don’t need it to also be a neutered settings menu where you can control closed captioning, check your messages and so on.

-	Occasionally get a searching for satellite message even though my signals on nearly all CONUS transponders on all the birds are in the high 90s.

-	Occasionally get a ‘Your TV does not support this resolution’ error

- DirecTV's HD line up blows! No Tru TV HD, No ID HD, no H2 HD, no DIY HD and a bunch of others. Terrible line up, especially considering they brand themselves 'the HD leader' on their access cards. They don't even carry all of my locals in HD.

Time Warner Cons/DirecTV Pros

- HD picture quality is superior. MUCH less compressed, sharper, crisper and better color saturation. When comparing channel by channel, you can easily see the difference. Also, this is probably due to less compression, I always keep my TV set to 240 Hz and I have yet to see any motion blur on DirecTV.

- Improved audio quality. I always thought that Dolby 5.1 was Dolby 5.1. But while doing picture quality comparisons, I noticed DirecTV does a much better job with bass and is better in the rear channels. Audio is louder and fuller. And yes, my A/V receiver is using the same exact audio setting for both inputs.

-	Superior 3D channel selection and it’s free. No way in hell is ESPN 3D worth the $10 Time Warner is selling it for. I would be willing to pay a modest price for a few 3D channels, but DirecTV provides them for free. 3Net looks to be a very cool channel

-	DirecTV receivers, or at least the new HR-34 can auto detect 3D content and automatically forces the TV into 3D mode. No additional actions need to be taken. This has improved with Time Warner with recent updates, but it’s not as seamless, you do have to press the D button on the remote and tell the box to tell the TV whether the content is in over under or side x side

-	I have my Buffalo Sabres back

-	Customizable channel lists. This is something Time Warner will probably never do, because they want you to see the channels you don’t subscribe to and hope just by launching the EPG and seeing something you may be interested in that you’ll upgrade your package. One of my negatives for DirecTV was going to be how there like 15 infomercial channels all randomly placed throughout the lineup, but thanks to having customizable channel lists, I don’t even know that they’re there.

-	Smart Search is a cool, although I’ll probably never use it. Although I do like when a sporting event is blacked out it searches to see if available on other channels. That’s pretty click.

-	Media share is also cool, but all of my other crap is DLNA, so I have no use for it

-	News Mix/Sports Mix, interesting concept, too bad it wasn’t HD

-	The obvious, an HD DVR with 5 tuners and a 1TB hard drive, that I’ll never fill more than 3%. But with its quarks, it can be a pain in the ass to use.

-	The EPG while is ugly and retarded looking, and while channel changing is slow, the EPG has lightning fast scrolling

- I like the time banner at the bottom of the screen better when using the DVR functions or when watching from the buffer.

[TWC] Time Warner Navigator

I just thought I'd share this article I found online regarding Time Warner's new Navigator (Mystro) software. Perhaps this can spark some discussion on what you think for the few that have been 'navigated'. Passport appears to be the BEST, and many people are angered of how buggy and slow Navigator runs in comparison. Here's the article:

December 07, 2007

Navigator

It's been a rough year for customers of Time Warner Cable, Kansas City's leading cable provider and possibly the leader in TV-related headaches. Time Warner would like to apologize for that, and we would like to accept its apology -- mostly, though, we hope it's learned its lesson.

The trouble started in January, when Time Warner started “upgrading” people's set-top boxes with new software to control the on-screen guide, DVR recording and other features. And then there was the ongoing soap opera with the NFL Network, which wasn't Time Warner's fault (in my opinion) but still resulted in a lot of angry customers wondering why they couldn't get the Packers-Cowboys game Nov. 29. In between, a channel-changing snafu irked some fans of A&E (the channel, not the newspaper section).

Above all, though, there was the Navigator debacle. In January I wrote that Time Warner was rolling out a new menuing system for its cable boxes. I quoted a local spokesperson who said Navigator had been developed “so we can be more responsive to our customers.” Famous last words. Since then, customers have flooded Time Warner's help lines, and my mailbox, with horror stories of sitting down to watch a recorded show, only to discover their DVRs had been wiped clean by the new software. Others were put off by the new menuing system, or driven mad by the three-second response times each time they pressed a button on their remotes, or felt like they were in a car with bad brakes each time they tried to fast-forward through a show ... the list went on.

“I have never seen my wife so frustrated with anything, (and) that is an area where she usually counsels me in patience,” wrote Chad Colgan of Lenexa. On Aug. 28, Time Warner switched his HD-DVR to Navigator, erasing the entire fourth season of “Battlestar Galactica,” which they were saving up for one of those viewing marathons that DVR users look forward to.

Two months later, when I checked in again with the Colgans, they were still having trouble. “When the DVR works we don't have many complaints,” said Colgan, “but the 50% of the time it hangs or freezes, like a slow computer, you want to yank it out of the wall.” Not only is he considering a switch to Everest, so is his brother-in-law. His cable hasn't been upgraded yet but is spooked by Colgan's tales of woe.

That's the kind of word-of-mouth damage Navigator can do to Time Warner's business, and not just in Kansas City. Its customers in Lincoln, Neb., also got “upgraded” this year, and the ensuing debacle led the city council there to pass a resolution calling for an investigation. The city's cable advisory board concluded that Time Warner had “beta-tested” Navigator on the unsuspecting people of Lincoln. (The AVS Forum's Navigator complaint thread scores high in Google search.)

I could go on: Jim Savage, HD-DVR customer, reports that “Navigator still gives me headaches as it is still incredibly slow, poor resolution, among other issues,” months after it was installed. Rebecca Tasler: “We had been so dissatisfied with the new Navigator software that my husband talked a tech into reinstalling the old Passport software system.” After that, recorded shows looked “horrible,” were heavily pixellated — what a surprise, my Passport-enabled box is suddenly doing the same thing. So now it’s not just Navigator.

Scott Simerly, who called my attention to the troubles in Nebraska, called Navigator’s interface “downright prehistoric. I fail to see any improvements in the functionality and the keyword search is horrible in comparison to the old system (Passport).”

And yet, the vast majority of people reading this are, according to Time Warner, having no problems at all. That's because they are using set-top boxes that have been tested with Navigator and work fine. The problem, says Damon Shelby Porter of Time Warner Cable Kansas City, is that there are some four dozen different cable box models in use around the area. And while Porter said Navigator has behaved well with “97 percent” of them, getting the software to behave with them all has been a bear.

“It was tested by our lab, it was tested by our employees in their homes but -- mea culpa -- it's really taken much longer for us to iron out the problems than we had hoped,” Porter said. “We're very frustrated.”

Not as frustrated as I was when I had to return my Navigatored HD-DVR to Time Warner for a replacement. To my relief, the new DVR hasn't been upgraded, because it's a different model and Time Warner has slowed the rollout of Navigator.

There was also that matter of Time Warner moving A&E to Channel 35 without telling anyone (although technically it did warn those of you who read the legal notices in the business section). Porter said a new process was put in place so future channel changes get better publicity.

And another thing — at some point, TWCKC pulled the plug on Turner Classic Movies' secondary audio (or SAP) channel. Time Warner hadn't gotten back to me by the time I filed this report, but a reader and I each independently confirmed you can't get the audio description of many TCM films offered on the SAP channel for viewers with visual disabilities. That feature should be available to everyone with cable, set-top box or not, and needs to be restored pronto.

Channels changing: On Jan. 1 Court TV, best known for launching Nancy Grace's career and for its gavel-to-gavel coverage of headline-grabbing trials, will become truTV (small “t”). Trials will still air during the day, but the channel's new owners -- what do you know, Time Warner again! -- will expand the evening lineup to include other types of mayhem besides criminal. Among its new series are “Sky Racers,” which will follow TV news choppers; and “One False Move,” focusing on people whose jobs or adventures take them to the edge of death.

Discovery is also rebooting two of its digital-tier channels in January. Discovery Times, which was launched in 2003 as a joint venture with the New York Times, petered out after three years. It's been quietly rebuilt around in-depth documentaries, and now the channel will be known as Investigation Discovery.

Planet Green is the new name of Discovery Home & Leisure, focusing on eco-friendly programming. You may have already heard of one program it's launching in 2008, “Greensburg Eco-Town,” which will document efforts in tornado-devastated Greensburg, Kan., to rebuild using environmentally friendly materials.

Meanwhile, another year has passed without a single international news channel being added to Time Warner's -- or Comcast's, or Everest's -- digital tiers. Al Jazeera, BBC World and France 24 are all there for the taking. This lack of public responsibility in a post-9/11 era is disheartening.

[TWC] DCX 3400, Android App, without Whole House DVR in 90025

I'm Looking to determine if I was given correct information by the online chat representative yesterday evening.

My story started several weeks ago when I was told that in order to use the android/iphone apps I would need a cable box that supported the Mystro Navigator guide. This jived with what I was reading here: http://www.timewarnercable.com/northeast/site.faqs/DigitalCab/TWCTVApp/What-cable-boxes-are-supported.

I upgraded my box but found it still running the older i-guide.

Chatting with a rep yesterday I was told that in order to use the Mystro guide, I'd have to upgrade to a "Whole House DVR" package for an additional $9 a month and a $50 install fee. I referenced the same article with them and was told that the box is indeed capable but I'd need to upgrade.

Is this correct?

Reasons why I should stay with TWC?

So my family is seriously considering switching to Fios. We have had TWC since the 80's. Our cable bill is now topping $185 a month. We have 3 HD boxes, sports package, hbo, 10/. 5 Internet, and unlimited voip telephone. Fios is offering us their ultimate hd package with 3 boxes including a free multiroom Dvr for life, 25/25 Internet, and unlimited voip telephone for $ 145 plus taxes and fees.

What are some reasons why I should stay with TWC? Channel wise I would be losing Fox Soccer channel plus. Didn't see to many other channel issues. Please let me know your thoughts. My dad wants to switch tomorrow but I wanted to make sure it was the best thing to do...

Bottom line, what does TWC offer that merits staying with them?

May be moving to Time Warner

Hi all,

I will be moving from Lakewood to Ohio city. Currently I have 24/3 connection with Uverse. Unfortunately, that can't follow me to Ohio City in Cleveland. The best AT&T can do in that area is give me 6/768. The upside is Time Warner can provide me with 30/5 for about the price I am paying now. Honestly, I can't argue with that! Now, my only concern is with port blocking and caps. From what I understand, internet caps is not an issue (they currently have none). However, I can't find anything on port blocking... Does Time Warner internet actually block any ports on the HSI connection?

Thanks!

[TWC] New to TWC

Hi there!

I just signed up with TWC (Milwaukee), and I thought I'd share my experience so far.

A bit of history: I had been a DirecTV sub for many years. About two years ago, I "cut the cord" and went to OTA and Netflix/Hulu. I have two TiVo Premieres w/lifetime service.

I've been perfectly happy with the combo, though there are some shows I did miss. At any rate, my wife works out of the house, and recently her responsibilities have changed. When she's at work, our two kids have to be upstairs entertaining themselves. It's been hard on them and while we don't allow TV watching all day, after two years of Netflix, they're running out of things to watch.

Moving on...

I notice that while not "cheap", Cable TV prices aren't bad if you're using a cable card, auto pay, and don't do the premium channels. So, I decide to give TWC a shot, and sign up for service.

The installer shows up a bit early, but is nice and easy to deal with. He has two cable cards with him, and set up takes a few minutes. Things are working for the most part, but I notice I'm missing some channels. He kind of shrugs it off and leaves. I later realize that I needed tuning adapters, which he didn't install.

I call back and they send someone out the next day. He arrives, but doesn't have any tuning adapters with him. Now this would normally be the start of a complaint but these guys were fantastic!

The installer calls another tech in a town 20 miles away. That tech calls the office, has someone meet him at the interstate with two adapters then drives to my house to install them! Talk about service!

Anyway so far, so good. I still have my antenna up, so I use that for the locals. The HD looks pretty good, especially compared to what I saw a few years ago. The only downside is I'm kind of suffering from TV overload. There's so much on, I can't figure out what to watch.

So, that begins our relationship. I have a pretty decent TV package on two TV's for just under $50. Not too bad. :)

This box is in my back/side yard and has nothing coming from it. I have searched a couple of sites to find a key to open but was wondering if someone could help me find a key to open it and see what it is used for. I want to remove it as it is in the way when I cut my grass. I use direct tv so I am guess this is might be an old cable box, but the cable for the street is down in pods by the street. I am guessing when the builder built the houses in this private lane neighborhood they put this box in. Here is a picture of the lock

[TWC] TWC South Texas has dropped some of our local stations

quote:Time Warner Cable is threatening to drop KRIS-TV, the CW South Texas, KDF, and KAJA-Telemundo at 11:59 pm on Monday, December 12, 2011. Tell Time Warner if it drops your favorite shows, you will drop Time Warner.

More info can be found here: http://www.kristv.com/timewarner/

Facebook note:
quote:Corpus Christi, Texas (December 9, 2011) - Time Warner Cable has informed KRIS-TV that it has refused to accept KRIS-TV's unconditional offer of an extension of the current agreement through the end of 2011. As a result, Time Warner Cable will take the apparently unprecedented step of dropping four local channels all at once despite the legal right and ability to carry those channels. Specifically, at 11:59 p.m. on December 12, 2011, Time Warner Cable will drop KRIS-TV, the market's NBC affiliate and news leader; CW South Texas, Independent Station KDF, and Corpus Christi Telemundo affiliate KAJA.

To avoid impacting local viewers, KRIS-TV presented the cable operator with very generous terms for carriage of its four channels. KRIS-TV also offered, and hereby extends again, an extension of the current agreement through December 31, 2011.

Time Warner Cable, however, has informed KRIS-TV that it will no longer offer these local channels unless KRIS-TV accepts immediately a proposal offered by the cable operator that is not consistent with marketplace conditions.

Local viewers will be adversely affected by Time Warner Cable's unilateral decision because they will need to cancel their cable service and switch to DirecTV or Dish Network. Consumers therefore will pay the price of Time Warner Cable's decision through disruption, delays while waiting for new service, and potential costs for canceling cable service and replacing set-top boxes.

"I am shocked," said Tim Noble, President and General Manager of KRIS-TV. "We offered Time Warner Cable a no-strings-attached extension until December 31, but they refuse to take it." Mr. Noble continued, "Time Warner Cable can keep our stations on until the end of the month while we continue to talk. I thought we were making good progress. I see no reason to hold viewers hostage if we are making progress. I guess Time Warner disagrees."

In a Petition that Time Warner Cable, along with several other cable and satellite operators, filed with the Federal Communications Commission in March 2010, Time Warner Cable urged the FCC to order an extension if the parties were negotiating in good faith. "We are giving Time Warner Cable exactly what it is telling the FCC it wants: an extension. Time Warner Cable cannot take yes for an answer," said Mr. Noble.

If Time Warner Cable does not accept KRIS-TV's extension, its subscribers will lose access to KRIS-TV, which means no Sunday Night Football, no Wildcard Playoff games on NBC, no Super Bowl, no Tonight Show or NBC prime time programming. They also will lose KRIS-TV's local programming, which includes top rated KRIS 6 News, Sports and Weather. Finally, Time Warner Cable's customers will not receive the CW South Texas, KDF, including 6 News at 9PM , or KAJA- the local Telemundo affiliate. Time Warner Cable's decision will not affect DirecTV, Grande Cable, Dish Network or any other provider.

"The extension offer stands," Mr. Noble explained. "If Time Warner Cable wants to continue to carry all of our stations until December 31, 2011, it can do so as we work toward a new agreement"

If Time Warner Cable chooses to drop KRIS-TV, the CW, KDF, and KAJA, the programming will remain available on other cable and satellite providers. It also will be available for free over the air with an antenna. Time Warner Cable's decision will not impact KZTV-TV-CBS, which will remain on Time Warner Cable's channel lineup.

[TWC] Cisco 4742 HDC sleep mode

Does anyone know if it is possible to turn off the "sleep" mode on a Cisco 4742 HDC box? Or if having a TV hooked to the box via HDMI and turned on will prevent the box from going into sleep mode?
(Hopefully this hasn't been asked and answered anywhere else on the forum-I did a search for 4742 and got virtually no hits).

We have a VCR and a DVR downstream from our 4742 set top box but the box goes into sleep mode after 5 1/2 hours if there is no activity with the set top box (ie change channel , look at guide, etc.). We just got digital service last month and are used to programming the DVR to record anytime we are out of town for several days. However we found that we mostly have recordings of "The channel is no longer available" due to the sleep mode.

I had a chat session with Time Warner yesterday and the technician said the sleep mode cannot be turned off and the best solution is to get a Time Warner DVR. We already own a Magnavox DVR that we are pleased with and don't want to just scrap it.

I asked the technician if having the TV , which is hooked to the box via HDMI, turned on would keep the box from going into sleep mode and he said yes. Does anyone if that is true? (At first the technician said no, but when I posed a question about watching the Super Bowl and asked if the box would go to sleep mode after 5 1/2 hours if I had not done anything, he said no-that having the TV on meant the box was being accesssed).

As an aside, I understand that the reason for the sleep mode is to meet Energy Star guidelines, but if I have to keep my TV turned on for a week while I am on vacation so I can record something that sort of defeats the purpose of Energy Star.

what type of Cable does DOCSIS3 use

if I order wideband 30m docsis3 service in my building
exactly what type of cable will the installer pull around
my apartment, with what sort of termination connector,
between the building distribution hub and their cable modem.

RG6U ? RG6U quad shielded ? Twisted Pair ? Fiber ? what ?

I ask because I may want to buy WHITE jacket color cable,
if the installer shows up with only BLACK jacketed cable as
the cable jacket will end up exposed along my ceiling molding.

broadband vs wideband - latency difference

i'm signing up for new service, and my building gets a discount;
up to 10mb broadband $30/mo
up to 30mb wideband $50/mo (docsis3)
(my bulk rate after the first year promotional rates expires)

i ask tech support if there is a quality benefit, not just capacity,
meaning does one give lower Latency(ping) over the other, and
if there is a lower primetime performance hit on wideband since
it's a newer last mile technology.

the answer was since wideband is faster and wider the Latency
should be less, just not as dramatically low as fastpath aDSL
where you don't share your last mile along the same data pipe,
as your copper pair goes right back to the central router port.

I also asked is the primetime impact of other users on the network
reduced on wideband vs broadband, simply because it's a newer
infrastructure, and he said no because both systems are sharing
the same pool of total bandwidth, however percentage wise the
impact is less because you'll notice 10-3mb more than 30-3mb.

does anyone want to add or contradict what I have been told?
