[TWC] Dallas/Fort Worth - Switching from U-Verse to TWC

Hi there,

I'm in the Irving area of Dallas/Fort Worth. I've been a U-Verse customer for 4 years and have their top tier service (U400). Pretty much have the full boat but the costs ($250) are astounding.

This is my current plan:
- Getting the highest tier internet (Ultimate (up to 50Mbps) $74.99/mo. For 12 Months
- Purchasing my own cable modem and doing my own wiring (which I've done previously)
- Getting CallCentric for a VOIP (and using that along with Reliance Global call to make outbound calls to Kolkata, India)
- Porting land-line number to CallCentric
- Dumping U-Verse completely

We start on the NetFlix/Amazon Prime video path, and if we want local channels, we can add it to our TWC order or get a HD antenna.

For those folks that are currently using TWC in this area, I've been reading mixed reviews of the internet connections. While I would have greater download speeds with TWC, how's the quality of the connection (granted that it depends on location, I know).

Thanks in advance for any replies, and let me know what you think of the above plan (sound, stupid, weird, try this instead).

Yours,
Spider

[TWC] Please Work to Improve HDMI Reliability!

Dear TWC,

The mediocre to poor quality of the set-top boxes is disheartening to say the least. Not to mention the fact that some divisions, Wisconsin among one of them, refuses to give out newer boxes unless you are a whole home DVR sub. One of the worst issues that I have heard from both customers and employees is the poor HDMI reliability on TWC's rented set tops.

Right now I got an SA-8300HDC that is connected via HDMI cable and most of the time has flickering audio and occasional flashing video that lasts for about 30 seconds. I have tried cold reboots, unplugging the HDMI cable, reconnecting it. The only sort-of work-around is to set Navigator to tune to an SD channel on boot-up, wait for the HDMI audio to synchronize. after which the box works fine. My other box, also an SA-8300HDC didn't have HDMI audio problems, but it did have the occasional "Mode Not Supported." I have talked to employees at TWC who say that this is due to poor firmware that needs updating. I am still on ODN 6.0.19. I am hoping that ODN 6.1.05 fixes this.

The point is though, what do you do when your division only gives out boxes that have been in the field for eight years and are second-hand rejects from other disgruntled customers? I could try Component Cables, but I don't want tons of wires and connections go to and from the TV, to the cable box, to the DVD Player. Furthermore, I really don't want to contact customer services for another refurbished box.

Sadly, TWC is losing cable customers to problems with outdated hardware and problems such as these. This is 2013. Customers should not be having to deal with HDMI issues on five-six year old boxes. I love TWC for the deals, and I had a wonderful tech who was kind and caring with this box-swap. However, the greatest tech in the world can't replace outdated hardware, or poorly designed software.

Why can't all customers get the newest boxes, that actually work?

[TWC] DTA box Not receiving the FOX Business Network ? ? ?

I'm in the North Texas area, near Dallas.

I have a DTA box (DCI401TWCZ). With that DTA box, I receive --all-- of the Basic and Standard channels listed in the Channel Lineup Brochure ----- Except for Channel 90, the FOX Business Network.

Is anyone else that is using the DTA box, getting the FOX Business Network ?

Tech Suppoert suggested that I reboot the DTA by unplugging the power cable. I did that. But 20 minutes later.... still no channel 90.

Are new Whole Home DVRs coming to TWC anytime soon?

Has anyone heard anything about TWC going to a multi-source Whole Home DVR solution similar to WOWs UltraTV, rather than having to hookup multiple DVRs together? It just seems like this is the direction the industry is currently heading and I was curious if it looked like TWC would be heading down the same path soon of if they were going in another direction altogether.

[TWC] Share Any Good Tech Experiances Here

With all the controversy and back-lash over bad TWC techs, I thought it would be cool to make a thread about good tech experiences here. Let's try to post only good tech experiences here, and see how it goes: I had Caller ID on TV multiple call logs, and intermittent pixiation on maybe three channels. I have Triple Play, with HBO, Showtime, and Sports Pass.

Tech brought out the SA-8300HDC. Picture seems clearer though and when he activated it from his truck, after the Cable Card boot up there was a screen that said something like. (You can't get the newer boxes in my division unless you are a Signature Home or Whole Home Sub.)

"Your TV Experience Will Begin in a Few Moments" (or similar words.) The bottom of the screen in the center had a count-down button that corresponded to the L-11, L-10...(ect) on the screen. I had never seen that quoted message before.

Still same version of Navigator. DVR Compensation is still there. The only thing that I had to do was I set the SD channels to Stretch. And I had to change channels before the box would take the Stretch setting.

The older software started counting down at L-13. This one starts at L-11, so something was shortened in the boot sector sequence. The box I just swapped also had the count-down start at L-11.

He also gave me a little "Getting Started With TWC book." The tech had his name and cell number inside the pocket of the book, which I thought was a nice touch. I liked his honesty about the Caller ID. He could have lied and said, "Oh, yea, we are really working on it and hopefully it will be fixed soon." Instead he said, "We had a staff meeting and the consensus was that as long as it was working, our guys didn't really care when it got fixed. They felt that as long as it is logging the calls, that this was the most important aspect.

He also called ahead of time and asked some questions just to verify the problems we were having, how long they were going on, could we guess the age of the box. This tech was excellent.

activating old DVR in limbo status

I recently got a couple of old Scientific Atlanta 8300 DVR's (with TWC stickers). I went to my TWC office to see if the DVR's could be activated and to verify their authenticity. According to the TWC database, the boxes are not stolen nor delinquent. However, they are no longer on their books. So, they will not activate them, nor will they take them back.

Is there a workaround or do I need to speak with another c/s rep? Even without DVR capability, do they have any use? Do I just have a couple of bricks?

I am sure this question has been asked before. I apologize. I used the forum's search feature and Google, but came up empty.

[TWC] New Remote UR5U-8780L-TWM

One of my remotes stopped working, so I took it to the TW store and exchanged it for the model in the subject line. Does anyone else on here also think these suck?

The buttons don't just move in and out; they also move sideways and up and down (as you are looking at the remote).

It sometimes takes me 3 tries to enter a 4-digit channel number because when I think I've pressed a button, all I've actually done is move it around.

According to a friend who works at TW here in Dayton, it's a known problem, and nothing is going to be done about it.

It's just one of those problems you shouldn't have.

Who buys these for TW anyway? How much of bribe is that person getting to approve this junk!

FWIW: Yes, I did take it back to exchange it, and the new one does the exact same thing.

Ugh!

[Need Info] New construction questions in Evansville?

I will be starting a new construction soon in an area of Evansville, Indiana that is serviced solely by TWC and am trying to best determine how to run the cabling throughout my home. I've added a small (5'x5'), cooled network room between my bonus room and the attic where I will have my main network cabinet. I plan to distribute my network and telephone drops from there.

I pretty much see myself having a cable run and a couple of ethernet drops to every room.

Is it still pretty much suggested that you have a dedicated cable run to every location you want a drop and run them all straight back to wherever the cable comes into the house? The most likely place for my electrical service, and as a result, the cable connections, is my garage. This is not where I want my network panel, because if heat, among other reasons. I'm thinking of installing a small structured wiring panel in the garage and running all of my cable television runs (about ten) back there and that would give TWC a location to install whatever equipment (amps, splitters, etc.) they need. Then, when they split off for the Internet, I could run that up to my network room in the attic. I'll have my router/gateway/whatever there and can then tie in with my switch and whatever telephone distribution system I plan to use. I'm also assuming that TWC uses VoIP routers now, assuming I decide to go with them for home phone rather than Ooma or some other provider, and that I'd need to tie the router's telephone output into my telephone switch block.

Thanks for any information anyone may be able to provide.

Sincerely,
- Byron Followell

[TWC] Removal of Navigator's DVR Compensation

Unfortunately, it is scheduled to happen on the ODN boxes sooner rather than later, and the negative impact is intense. I created my own thread on this issue because it is strong enough to have its own thread Although I still have this feature, it's probably going to be gone within a couple weeks per the firmware upgrade. My thoughts:

I don't think TWC expected the negative feedback to be this strong. However, as to the removal of DVR Compensation, it is justified because there are too many customers with limited coordination ability who will no longer be able to stop the box on a dime, as the removal of this feature now demands. The removal of DVR Compensation is certainly one of the worst decisions regarding the design and implementation of the Navigator software that I have seen. There is no question that the negative impact of this features' removal has upset thousands of customers.

Hob or anyone, what's the best way to contact TWC for them to consider re-adding this feature?

[TWC] QAM in general for those wondering about spotty service

According to the Time Warner tech, they are only required to accept OTA channels into their system, but not required to deliver it to the customer. Perhaps that explains why people are experiencing issues with QAM. It appears they provide OTA via QAM at their discretion and convenience; (Names removed)
Tech: All of these channels are injected into our network as required by the FCC however we do not offer any support for those frequencies as we will use them for our service as needed. So, you may get these channels one day but not the other. We grid the frequencies as needed.

Me: So the OTA channels may not be available at times through the cable system, correct?

Tech:This is correct, the frequencies will be injected but may not be available at the time just depending on the cable grid requirements at the time.

Me: I just want to be sure that the official Time warner response is that local OTA channels are not always available as required by the FCC.

Me: Is that correct?

Tech: Sort of, its is not required by the FCC for the OTA channels to be available just injected into the network. So you are correct in saying they will not always be available.

Me: Thanks. I believe that is all I need, and unless you indicate otherwise, is the official response from time warner regarding QAM service.

(several minute delay)

Tech:I apologize for the delay. I do not have any additional statements regarding the OTA channels.
There was another response by the tech, but he disconnected so quickly after sendint it that it just flashed on my screen and I couldn't read it or copy it. Although I'd requested a transcript to be sent to my email, it didn't arrive.

TW Voice Zone PC App

I just noticed this yesterday. Very cool! I was hoping they'd do something like this. Sure as hell beats using AIM for Caller ID on PC.

You can create contacts, listen to your voice mail and a directory search feature looks like will be added. You can set the program to launch on start up, or not, and minimize to the system tray. When you have an incoming call, a small window will pop up a little bit above the system try that looks like the Caller ID on TV prompt to alert you of a call. In addition to this visual alert, you can also have an audio alert.

In playing around with the app, while pretty basic and straight forward, I do like it. My only suggestions would be to let the end user preview the audio alert and let the user add their own customizable alert tone. Also the ability to synch or import something like Google Contacts with the program would be cool, and have the other person’s picture pop up would be even better. Although, in order to work correctly, I suppose the formatting would have to be the same. In your Google Contacts if you have your friend Jenny’s phone number listed as 867-5309, the caller ID On PC displays 10 digits, you would have to make sure all of your imported contacts have their full 10 digit phone number.

I cancel the recording and in a few hours it's back. How can I stop this from happing? It is very annoying.
