[DVR] Received software update in VA

I have the Cisco RNG200N in one of the Virginia counties that were listed to get the update and got it last night. Looks like I can't set the SPDIF Audio to Other, it is only on Dolby. It isn't a big deal but I don't like when options are removed that work well with my setup.

If someone has some information on changing this, that would be great. MY mother-in-law had this same software package when she moved to a Time Warner location that used to be Adelphia so it isn't a huge change. I'm looking forward to the Tru2Way guide.

[DVR] HD DVR fuctionality changed after switch to XFinity

Comcast switched our area over to 100& digital, XFinity last night. My regular HD boxes remote controls are fine, nothing changed. However, on the HD DVR box the remote control now has duplicated buttons that perform the same function to control the DVR playback. The buttons on top and now the 4 white buttons in the middle. WHY!?!?! Because someone is too lazy to slide their thumb up two inches to control?

This is extremely annoying! Now, I have to hit the Guide Button and select the station to just see whats playing 2 hours in advance. I liked where I was able to just hit the right white arrow key and see whats playing next.

There is also no way to change this back to the original way in the software. This should have been programmed to have it either way!!!! But no, Comcast once again thinks whats best for all customers and doesn't think out of the box. Just plan ignorant!!!!

[Rant] On-Screen Guide Missing Information

I wish there was a local number where one could call and let the local office know that the guide is incomplete.

Although I'm glad that Mercer County, NJ recently received a new batch of HD channels especially the ones numbered greater than 999, channel 1218 (News12) does not have the guide info. Also, about 3 other channels have no guide info (and haven't for years). If I call the regular comcast line, they either want to "send a signal to my box" or "send out someone". I cannot seem to make it clear that it is just the guide and that it can be fixed on their end.

I realize that there are much bigger items to complain about but I don't see why someone in a local office can't go through the guide weekly as a quality check to see if all is good. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

News Channel 8 DC HD?

What a waste of bandwidth! The only HD part is the ticker.
I'm sure WJLA-ABC DC is to blame since they own news ch. 8.
Most of the content on WJLA news is SD. The sports clips are so blurry, it is hard to see the numbers on the players backs. Worse the low res youtube. They dont use any HD cameras for field reporting.
I've emailed WJLA news asking when they are going HD. They never reply.
What a fail broadcaster. It is time to retire the SD equipment.

using a usb tv dongle to view cable T V on a PC

I have a USB tv dongle that hooks up to coax cable at one end. I used to be able to pick up most of the comcast channels that I subscribe to by using windows media center. i could then record my favorite shows much like a DVR. However, now i only get a black screen when i tune into any channel, but i do hear the audio.

I rebuilt my entire PC and re-installed everything from scratch but still get the black screen with audio on every channel.

I am wondering whether Comcast made a change that would prevent me from using this device to view TV on my PC?

anybody in the know?

Thanks

[TiVo] Comcast Tivo Service

Currently a double play Comcast customer (HSI and Phone). Thinking of going to triple play and upgrading my whole house to HD at the same time.

www.comcast.com/tivo/

This is apparently the Tivo software loaded onto the Comcast Motorola HD DVR box. Pretty interesting.

* Is this available everywhere?
* The link above says it is included in the triple play bundle price. Is that right?
* Can I get it on every new HD DVR that I order for my house?
* Can I get it installed later, after the initial upgrade to TV from my current double play, and if so what is involved in that later upgrade (truck roll, just a software push, and cost)?

Sorry if this has been covered here before. I did some searching and didn't really see a comprehensive, up to date, post with info on this service. Lots of old info on the internet about when it went into trial, etc., but nothing recent.

Comcast Rolling Out Anyplay

Sounds something like a STB that allows you to watch live TV on iPad while within range of the Anyplay box. Only in Denver and Nashville currently - and no additional charge. Requires subscription to XFINITY HD Triple Play package and enrollment in the XFINITY Insider program - not familiar with that.

Post also mentions "bringing On Demand content to even more devices, such as the Xbox 360 and Samsung connected TVs."

[HD] HD costs extra?

My elderly mother-in-law, who couldn't care less about HD and probably couldn't see the difference, needs a new TV.

She gets digital Xfinity from Comcast -- many channels including HBO but the box has no HD output. This much is included in her Condo fees. I called about getting an HD box, and was told that it would be an additional ("discounted") $7.95 billed directly to her.

Isn't HD, the national standard, supposed to be included by now? Or is the equipment an exception to that?

We'll probably cheap-out and go with the stretch-view. Any TV brands known for better stretching? It'll only be about ~32 inches. Heading out to Costco or BestBuy in the next couple of days.

Thanks,
tlc

New TV Question

Looking to buy a new tv and can't really decide between a few specs. I want a 60''...either a DLP (Currently have one and am very happy with it) or LED.
I've read a ton about refresh rate...in a round about way the LED's are usually 120 whereas the DLP that i'm looking at is 60hz...The DLP can be 120hz for about $300 more.
What would you suggest? Is LED any better on quality or is it just a durability issue? Is 120hz worth a few hundred dollars over 60 Hz?

Comcast shows off its new 'Barcelona' HD guide upgrade!

We've already gotten a large eyeful of Comcast's next-gen Xcalibur guide that's on the way next year with social networking tie ins and apps, but until that arrives, what can we hope for on the existing Scientific Atlanta, Cisco, and Motorola cable boxes? Sr. Director of Video Product Development Ted Hodgins has the answer, dropping in a link to the company's new Barcelona guide that it is already delivering to Anyroom DVR customers in Florida now, and will roll out in more markets before the end of the year. Like the upgraded guides we've seen for FiOS and TiVo, this iteration is built for HDTVs, with 16x9 graphics and far more listings information than was previously available on one screen. Other new features include the option to filter listings down to HD, premium, kids, movies, or sports content, easy jumping between days and saved searches. When we first laid eyes on another version of the software nearly four years ago we were impressed by its slick looks, but while it's still a major upgrade over the current decade-old cable box interfaces, in 2011 it takes more than a simple facelift to impress us. Hit the gallery for a few screenshots or click the source link below to meet the new guide before it rolls out in your area and see if its enough to hold you over for the time being.
