[X1] Xfinity X1 now available to New Customers

I just heard a brand new radio commercial for the new Xfinity X1 cable box on local radio station 94.1 WIP Sports radio. But like others have said its currently only available for new residents and customers :( I am a long time Triple Play customer and I wonder if I called up and complained if I could get comcast to hook me up with a few X1 boxes? My guess not very likely :( But the good news is at least its here for new customers so maybe spring or summer 2013 it will be available for the rest of the Triple Play customers.

If anyone here in Philly gets it maybe you can give us a nice review with some photos and video :)

[Rant] Comcast Credit pull 4 times in less than 30 days

So last year from 8-12 to 9-6 comcast pulled my credit 4 times, is that normal? I can't imagine that being remotely normal. It dropped my score as well which I don't appreciate.

Anyone have any idea who I could call to see why this is being done so often?

Thanks

disconnected and money taken from my account for service.

I had recently discontinued service on May 9th,,spoke to loyalty department, was assured I would not get charged from automatic billing for the next billing cycle of that month.
Well,I was,and calls to Comcast revealed the person in
Loyalty department was not loyal to his word, and he never submitted the paperwork to stop my payment from being withdrawn.
I phoned on the 21st of May,and still there is no response to giving me back that big hunk of money taken from my account.
I had to call my credit union to put a stop hold, and that is unacceptable, and cost me money, time and. A paperwork affidavit.
Still calling, still trying to get my money.
It seems taking the money is straight forward,it is getting it back that is taking a month and more.
Seems,it is not in the typical domain to reissue funds for payments taken from accounts that are no longer even in existence.
I had been a Comcast customer since 1991,and we left because of the costs of live streaming escalating.
It seems I have a timeline pinned down now for a check to be sent in a week from now.
I appreciate finally speaking with a few people who figured out after checking and transferring me about, how to resolve the matter.
Comcast had opened up my life when I had a back injury and was left bedridden for just under a year.
Now,to see how this other company works?
Perhaps, one day Comcast will fold in live streaming?
Thank you for the opportunity to share.
I find exchanging experiences to be informative, and is often a tool to gain from.

New Guides for SA/Cisco Areas (Info from Ted Hodgins Blog)

The following posts are from Comcast's Ted Hodgins, Sr. Director, Video Product Development - Navigation, in Media & Entertainment, "New Guide for Scientific Atlanta Cable Boxes" blog:

http://blog.comcast.com/2010/05/new-guide-for-scientific-atlanta-cable-boxes.html

They contain information about the new Comcast guides for the SA/Cisco areas.

quote:Hi Ted,

I know the current guide for the SA/Cisco areas is called S25 and the guide for Cisco AnyRoom DVR functionality is called On-Screen Guide 2.0. What is the name of the guide that will be released this summer for the SA STBs?

Will Cisco RNG STBs get this guide or will they skip it and only get On-Screen Guide 2.0?

Thanks,

Russ

http://blog.comcast.com/2010/05/new-guide-for-scientific-atlanta-cable-boxes.html#comment-45717 quote:Hello Russ. The S25 name you referenced for this guide is not a customer-facing name but yes that is a name we use internally when referring to this version of the guide. You can see the S25p3 naming in the guide configuration menu. The next version of the guide coming out over the summer is labeled internally as S26.

For others, here is some inside baseball: The version number (S25, S26) of the on-screen guide for your cable box can be found in the guide's setup menu.

Press the Menu button twice on the silver Comcast remote control, select Setup, then Cable Box setup, arrow down to Configuration and 'Select to display' and press OK/Select.

The line immediately underneath the Review Configuration header will show you the version of the guide currently on your cable box. The first few characters (S25p3) indicate the guide code number. A change in guide code number on that box would indicate an update to the guide.

Don't worry. You will hear about the new guide from us in advance in a few different ways (other than having to constantly check your guide code number via the above)!

What area is getting which guide and when depends a lot on time, geography and hardware (cable box type) with a few moving parts to make it interesting.

To try and put it simply, most all Scientific-Atlanta branded cable boxes will be receiving this new guide (S26) regardless of where you happen to live. Some smaller quantities of older models of SA boxes (about 1% of our deployed boxes in SA-Cisco footprint) will get a guide update without the iTV applications.

In some areas (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota and New Mexico), we plan to deliver On-Screen Guide 2.0 this year to the Cisco RNG series (RNG 100, 150 and 200) of cable boxes. Some of these areas may get S26 on their Cisco box first before getting On-Screen Guide 2.0. Other areas may go directly to On-Screen Guide 2.0 on newly deployed Cisco RNG cable boxes.

The deployment sequence, customer communication plan and employee training plan will take that into consideration as each market will be at a different stage of the On-Screen Guide 2.0 process.

Other SA/Cisco areas that are in states that I have not listed above are not currently targeted for On-Screen Guide 2.0 this year and some of those areas (that I have not listed) may get our On-Screen Guide 3.0 (also called the X1 guide) this year or next year.

The long term plan is to get all of our newest cable boxes (regardless of hardware manufacturer or geography) onto a common guide starting in 2013 to provide a consistent experience.

[X1] having an annoying problem

Hey guys,
i've noticed a really annoying problem that started happening like a couple weeks ago. Basically, as i'm watching a program, whether DVR or Live TV, the sound will cut in and out. It's a quick 1 second cut out but it's frequent and annoying enough where I notice it.

My TV is a 55 inch Samsung led but the sound is going through a Samsung soundbar. I also am a X1 owner.

Has anyone had this sort of issue before either with the X1 or another cable box? At first I thought it might just be that specific channel having issues but noticed it happens on all channels. I was watching Game of Thrones last night and counted it happening like 4 times throughout the show and it was very annoying.

Any insight would be appreciated, cheers

Comcast Begins to Connect to Boxee's Cloud DVR

MSO Starts Limited Offer of E-DTAs That Let Boxee's New Video Device Access an Encrypted Form of Comcast's Basic TV Tier

Comcast has begun to make available a new type of Digital Transport Adapter (DTA) that will feed an encrypted form of its basic digital video tier to Boxee's new Cloud DVR product.

Comcast is notifying eligible Boxee customers about the E-DTA in "select markets" where Comcast has begun to encrypt its "B-1" tier, a spokeswoman said. She didn't reveal those markets, but noted that Comcast intends to phase in B-1 encryption in additional cities over the comings months.

The new device, called an Ethernet-Digital Transport Adapter (E-DTA), supports HD video and home networking capabilities. Its internal IP mini server turns encrypted QAM video channels into protected IP streams that can be shared with the Boxee device over connections outfitted with Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technology with DTCP-IP content protection. It's an integrated security device, so there's no CableCARD interface.

The E-DTA became a central figure during U.S. cable's pursuit of new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules that now allow operators to encrypt their basic service tiers in all-digital systems, a decision that prevents CE devices from receiving a small subset of unencrypted "Clear QAM" channels in basic tiers that include the major broadcast stations. Cable argued that basic tier encryption would help operators clamp down on service theft and reduce truck rolls because it would enable MSOs to activate and deactivate services remotely in the most cases. The FCC basic TV encryption ban was lifted on Dec. 10, 2012.

To help get it, the largest six incumbent U.S. cable MSOs (Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Cablevision Systems and Bright House Networks), representing about 86 percent of all U.S. cable subscribers, agreed to let IP-based retail devices receive basic TV tiers without a CableCARD. Longer term, CE companies will also have the ability to license that technology and build it into their products.

Ealier on, Boxee and Comcast signed an separate agreement that focused on the E-DTA component that's now part of the FCC rule.

Among other conditions outlined in the new rules, operators are also on the hook to provide existing customers who take only the basic tier a set-top or CableCARD for free for two years after encryption begins. Customers who receive Medicaid and only take the basic tier can get that equipment for up to two TVs without charge for five years.

Boxee VP of marketing Andrew Kippen noted in an email exchange that the company is still finalizing details with Comcast but "you should start to see the E-DTAs begin to appear over the next month" as Comcast begins to notify Boxee users about the encryption process.

It was not immediately known who will supply the initial batch of E-DTAs to Comcast. The MSO buys other types of DTAs from sources such as Motorola Mobility, Pace, Technicolor and Evolution Digital.

Importantly, the E-DTA will enable Boxee to access Comcast's basic TV tier while preserving the Boxee user interface. Boxee's newest product, the $100 Cloud DVR (formerly called Boxee TV), supports a family of apps, including Netflix, as the name suggests, a cloud-based DVR. It can also receive free, over-the-air TV channels via a digital antenna. The Cloud DVR service is currently available in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Houston, and Washington, D.C., according to the Boxee Web site. The free version provides five hours of DVR playback a month, keeps recordings for up to 90 days, and only allows DVR playback on a TV. The premium, $9.99 per month version offers unlimited and perpetual DVR storage, and lets users access recordings on TVs, PCs, tablets and smartphones.

A Boxee spokeswoman confirmed that only the Boxee Cloud DVR (not the original Boxee Box) is eligible for the new E-DTA.

[STB] Cisco thinking of getting out of the set-top box business?

Don't know how much to trust the NY Post, but here is their article on Cisco thinking of getting out of the set-top box business:

Cisco thinking out of the set-top box biz
NY Post - February 20, 2012
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/cisco_thinking_out_of_the_set_top_cjsQHGTCpO3DKevYzs7ysI#ixzz1mxCWOYew

"After six years, Cisco is looking to switch off its Scientific-Atlanta cable set-top box business, The Post has learned.

The Internet equipment maker, which in 2006 paid close to $7 billion for the tech firm, has put the company on the block as margins in that business have come under pressure, according to a source following the situation.

“I know Cisco is out looking to sell Scientific-Atlanta,” the source said.

A Cisco spokeswoman declined to comment.

Much has changed in the set-top box business since Cisco acquired S-A, most of all the streaming of Internet content and the race to introduce video on multiple platforms.

Arguably, the set-top box is becoming outdated.

The most likely buyers are private equity firms, who often look to pay reasonably-low purchase multiples for mature businesses which they can use as cash cows, another source said.

Microsoft had an interest in 2006, a source said, but much has changed in five years.

Cisco has said it’s moving from set-top boxes to Videoscape, a product built on technology gained from Scientific-Atlanta that allows media companies to deliver content through the cloud to smart phones and tablets.

In a public filing, Cisco said its key manufacturing facilities for Scientific-Atlanta’s products are located in Juarez, Mexico, and in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, it entered into an agreement to sell them to one of its contract manufacturers.

Cisco closed trading Friday at $20.29 a share, up more than 12 percent this year after a rough 2011 that saw its shares lose roughly 8 percent of their value."

[HD] Get Ready for "Ultra-HDTV"

While Comcast is still charging us an "HD Technology" fee, it looks like DirecTV is already planning for "Ultra-HDTV":

DirecTV planning for Ultra HDTV
Advanced Television - March 15, 2012
http://advanced-television.com/index.php/2012/03/15/directv-planning-for-u-hdtv/

"US pay-TV giant DirecTV will adopt Ultra-HDTV. DirecTV is already planning its future spectrum needs in readiness for U-HDTV. Philip Goswitz, DirecTV’s SVP/Space and Communications/R&D, speaking at the Satellite 2012 event in Washington, said “4,000 and 8,000-line services are great for the satellite industry, and will ensure that satellite broadcasting continues to distinguish itself for image quality of service. We see this as a key strategic advantage for us.”"
:
While Goswitz did not say when 4,000-line services would start, and it is fair to say that there is still a great deal to be done on compression and other enabling technologies in order to bring these super high-resolution images into viewers’ homes, it is nevertheless clear that DirecTV wants to see its lead maintained over terrestrial TV, cable and DSL-type delivery services, and Goswitz sees satellite as maintaining that technological edge.

Japan’s planned introduction of Ultra-HDTV is scheduled for 2020, and will use Ka-band, a largely unused set of frequencies."

Geez - I don't think I want to know what Comcast would charge as a "U-HD Technology" fee then! :)

It sounds like the new X2 software will in fact run on you current Pace X1 DVR box with a optional update. Comcast also unveiled a small set-top box for secondary TVs in a home. It is a third the size of a normal set-top box called "XI3" that will also run X2 software. I assume these new "XI3" boxes will work with Anyroom DVR and will be able to run the X2 software nice and fast unlike the POS "RNG150N" Non DVR HD box that they give you now.

Sounds like a great time to be a Comcast customer! :)

DVR Extender w/Moto Boxes

As mentioned earlier on this web site, Comcast is beginning to roll out DVR extender compatibility with Motorola DVRs. I was so excited when I heard this that I called Comcast and asked if it was really true. The lady said, yes, but they have only certified one drive, the WD My Book AV 1TB eSata drive. I asked, "Has this been enabled in my area?" She said. "Yes!"

To be honest I had my doubts but I ordered the model from WD that specifically cited Comcast compatibility, anyway. Well, of course it doesn't work (shoulda known) but it appears this capability is on the way so at least I'll be ready from Day 1.

As I write this, looks like only Indiana gets to extend their DVRs so far. I'll be patient and keep my drive plugged in and wait.

For more info, you can see this page on Comcast's web site (which I didn't find until after buying the drive):
