I guess I just don't get it

I really don't know quite how to approach this topic, thus the title of this thread.

What I'm referring to is the number of open source advocates who pay for Windows simply so they can play games. It just sort of baffles me as it is so far removed from how I see the world. I'm not saying I'm right and everyone who acts differently than I do is wrong. I'm just saying I don't get the logic behind the actions.

A few years ago, well, 20 years ago, I bought a vcr from a well-known retailer. The next day that vcr died and I took it back to them and asked for an exchange. They refused to exchange it for me. I couldn't believe it. I had spent $1,000's of dollars a year in that store for years and they had never done anything like that before. I asked them if they were sure they would not exchange it even if it meant losing me as a customer, and they said they were NOT going to exchange it for me.

I told them, OK. I'll never darken your doorway again. You just lost probably an average of $5000 a year in business from me. They looked at me and shrugged and I walked out. I've never bought anything from them again as they didn't value me. It seems like they lost a lot of other customers over similar things because 7 years later they declared bankruptcy and at the time they refused to exchange the vcr they were riding high.

MS is exactly like that retailer. They just don't give a rip about the consumer. They laden their products with DRM, which does nothing but rip of the consumer. Their business practices have kept the price of an OS extremely inflated. They destroy competition rather than co-exist. They don't want their fair share. They want it all, and that affects us all.

So, I guess I don't understand why people put up with it, especially when they know and understand exactly how MS operates. Why place personal amusement so high on the list of personal priorities that doing business with an entity that is known to screw you over is even an option?

Like I said, I just don't get it. I simply refuse to support a business that screws me over if I have any choice in the matter. Personal amusement is not a necessity. We can live without it and have a vast number of other other options for amusement other than computer games.

So, why do geeks who are open source advocates support a company that they know is screwing them over and has done about everything in its power to destroy open source which is something they profess to believe in?

Like I said. I just don't "get" it. It baffles me.

Install Linux on Thinkpad 365

I'd like to take my old IBM Thinkpad 365, and install DSL on it. Since it doesn't boot from a CD, I was thinking it might make the most sense to pull out the HD, and load DSL on it using another computer. What do you guys think? What's the best way to make this thing bootable?

Need help to extract data from an old mysql db

Here is my problem

My server was getting old, so I ripped the drives out, installed a new root drive, a software RAID 5 array for storage, etc.

But before I ripped the drives out, I forgot to do a dump of the mysql db. The drive is now in a USB case that's a pain to open, my new server is all finished, so I'm trying to avoid having to get the original drive out of its USB case to boot the old system just to make the sql dump. I can mount the USB drive on the new system, but I read that I'm not supposed to copy files to copy a mysql db.

I tried the following paths, but I failed at all of them, so if you could help me out, I'd appreciate it a lot
1) boot on the USB drive through the BIOS. Just plain doesn't work
2) boot on the USB drive through fancy grub commands. Didn't manage to make it work, no idea how to do this
3) boot on the USB drive with a debian install CD. Doesn't work
4) tried mysqldump, mysqlmport, mysqlhotcopy commands, but I don't understand how they work, and the manpage doesn't seem very clear to me

Do you have suggestions? Coudl it be possible to boot that drive in a VMware machine?

Thinking of uninstalling UBUNTU

And maybe installing openSUSE or something else. Just not sure which version of Linux will give a more user friendly experience.

I've grown a little tired of things not working correctly in UBUNTU. Video doesn't play right, certain animated or video images (ex: the youtube player) are not shown in the web browser, FX isn't displaying webpages correctly (text is either super small or super big). And then to correct these issues I have to either type or copy and paste a bunch coding to have something function correctly. Why can't it just, well...work?

It's just too much coding for me. So could anyone recommend a version that would suit me more. Or, are they all like that?

AM I the only one?

in the Linux community on DSLR who tries to do everything I used to do on Winblows using the Linux alternative?

No Wine here.

I admit, there are times when I MUST boot windows to do certain things, but I get more enjoyment out of something that someone cares enough about Linux users to create or modify for us to use. It makes me feel appreciated!

Can Vista be removed & 147;ubuntu148; installed as the OS?

Newbie on a tight budget in need of expertise.

Intend to use a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 (2 ghz/667mhz fsb/2mb cache) 4gb ram, 250 gb hd, 15.4" wxga, CD / DVD) for power point presentations, it will not be used on the web or for gaming.

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DNDWPA3&s=dhs

The projector is a Toshiba TDP-T45U that has 1024H x 768V resolution, so 1280x800 is sufficient video.

http://explore.toshiba.com/projectors/mobile/TDP-T45U

According to PeteC2’s comments, which are much appreciated, 4gb of ram is the sweet spot for Vista.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20425565-Notebook-memory-questionobservation-wVista

1.) What size ram is the sweet spot for XP Pro & or ubuntu?

2.) Can Vista be removed & “ubuntu” installed as the OS?

3.) I’ve read that ubuntu has powerpoint equivalent, but to me the explanation is Greek. Have any of you used ubuntu & recommend it over powerpoint? If so, which site would you download or order the cd from?

Will send a $100 if their OS & software works as I'm fed up with Bill Gates.

Many thanks in advance.

Ubuntu - Firefox 3 failed upgrade

Hey y'all

Today I noticed that I had a failed upgrade. I just clicked next like an idiot, and got firefox 3 erased

I tried to reinstall, and noticed it was impossible to do so because of failed dependencies. It was complaining the versions of libpango and xulrunner were too old.

I found out that I had only enabled the security updates in the package manager. So the firefox update is pushed via security updates, but not its dependencies. :uhh:

To make it work, temporarily allow important updates in the package manager, install FF3, and rollback to your previous settings.

Hope this helps

Foxconn deliberately sabbotaging Linux installs?

There is quite a bit of chatter about how Foxconn is using a broken ACPI for Linux. Whether it's malicious in intent, who knows.

But for anyone who has a Foxconn and has had crashing, there are a few tips for stabilizing things (although it's somewhat complex since it involves disassembling the BIOS/etc heh).
