Wheezy

New to Linux.. Played with it years ago but don't remember squat about it.

Was pretty impressed with the way Wheezy flew on to an older box and worked as a desktop quite well. Glad I tried it out.

Decided that I would build a small home network out of it since as a client it was basically a brain dead install. I'm using the AMD64 kernel.

I had hoped to build a domain controller(LDAP not NIS+)/file server, mail server and a client. Should be straight forward. Can do this in a couple of hours with Windows Servers. Was thinking I could get the Exim4 server to handle mail for all my personal domains, but that apparently doesn't work. Though hosted Exchange was a snap.

I can't seem to get past the bind9 installation. I'm waiting on my 4th install of Wheezy to finish so I can hose that one as well.

I've tried following different Debian 7 bind9 guides but they all end up with a trashed box with bind9 FAILED and unfortunately I don't have the experience to trouble shoot a bad install, especially if I have never seen it work correctly to begin with.

I'm wondering what people are using for DNS and unless your already a guru at it, what guides will allow you a successful installation of bind9?

My 3rd attempt worked better than the others. With the mail server it could send mail but if someone off the network replied they always received a 'does not relay' NDR. Couldn't get Exim4 working correctly either it seems. What MTA should I be using?

I posted on the Debian community but after reading what I could understand from the manuals and then being told to RTFM it's kind of lost it's luster there. Those people need downers.

I could sure use someone to guide me a little. Just point to the water. I can drink it on my own.

Help making data readable

I have a web enable irrigation system.

The system has an api that allows you to curl the data.

I am trying to use conky to curl the data and display it on my conky window.

The problem is that I dont know how to make the data readable.

Here is what I got on conkyrc.

quote:#${voffset 4}${font PizzaDude Bullets:size=14}a${font} Status: ${alignr}${execi 3600 curl http://irrigation:23456/status.json}

Here is the output:

quote:{"zoneNumber":0,"progNumber":0,"allowRun":true,"running":false,"useSensor1":true,"isRaining":false,"zoneSecLeft":0,"progSecLeft":0,"maxZones":10}

How can I make the output be aligned and readable?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Debian GNU/Hurd 2013 released

said by http://bits.debian.org/2013/05/debian-gnu-hurd-wheezy.html :It is with huge pleasure that the Debian GNU/Hurd team announces the release of Debian GNU/Hurd 2013. This is a snapshot of Debian "sid" at the time of the Debian "wheezy" release (May 2013), so it is mostly based on the same sources. It is not an official Debian release, but it is an official Debian GNU/Hurd port release.

Openvpn server on my Ubuntu 10.04 VPS

I installed openvpn on my ubuntu 10.04 virtual private server. I set it up as a routed vpn. ( Using this tutorial and this tutorial

I think it's all setup and configured properly. My client can properly connect and get an IP. Now the only issue is that I don't have connectivity to the internet (Also, I'm actually unable to ping the VPN gateway or resolve or ping hostnames/public IP's)

I think the issue is in my iptables. I added the following as the tutorial requests:

iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPTiptables -A FORWARD -s 10.8.0.0/24 -j ACCEPTiptables -A FORWARD -j REJECTiptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -j SNAT --to-source 1.1.1.1
Replace 1.1.1.1 with the actual ip address. (I used my vps public IP)

Looking at my iptables, the POSTROUTING is *not* being entered into the iptables:

root@VM:~# iptables -S-P INPUT ACCEPT-P FORWARD ACCEPT-P OUTPUT ACCEPT-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT-A INPUT -i tun -j ACCEPT-A INPUT -i eth -j ACCEPT-A INPUT -i eth0 -j ACCEPT-A INPUT -i tun0 -j ACCEPT-A FORWARD -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT-A FORWARD -s 10.8.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT-A FORWARD -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-port-unreachable
Does anyone know why this is not entering into my iptables, and how I can force it to take?

Thanks!

compiz and remote access...?

basics:
linux mint 14 x64 -- mate (but installed and currently running cinnamon 1.6).

my work tank is usually docked comfortably on my desk in my home office. i don't travel with it -- because its about 8lbs and my little macbook air handles enough for customer meetings. however -- i'd like to be able to remotely access it for when i need it.

i've run into a lot of problems with the built-in vino server and having compiz enabled.
i have recently installed free-nx (due to its handling of slow-speed connections well) and have had the same problems (screen not refreshing) that i've had with vino. i then (out of desperation) tried teamviewer -- with similar results.

is there any effective remote-access solution for a desktop computer running compiz on the backend for eye-candy (and not having to cobble a script to disable/enable on remote-access)?

thanks!

WINE Problem

Hi folks. Running Kubuntu 12.04 with KXstudio and JACK Audio fully installed and fully updated.

This is my main MIDI rig and I prefer to use Cakewalk 9.01 Home Studio under WINE to do most of my sequencing.

Anyway, after an update a month or so ago my Cakewalk started running erratically and often not at all under wine.

Basically the program would load, but the customary splash screen and warning about the fonts being unable to load would not appear at all. These were normal bugs which I had learned to live with.

Now however, when I run the program it runs fine until I try to load a MIDI file to edit.

It's at this point the sucker just tends to lock up and become unresponsive.

Tonight I tried booting it from a command line and waiting while it attempted to load and this time, once in a while, it finally loaded up and seemed to behave normally after a delay.

I'm thinking it's got to be some kind of permissions issue that's changed but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is.

Here's the screen dump from the terminal window for sharper eyes than mine to scan thru.

I'm seeing plenty of errors and warnings but for the life of me I can't figure out which ones are the culprits.

Howabout it. Anyone out there with sharper eyes than mine have some sage advice to offer?

What makes this extremely aggravating to figure out is that JACK audio is being updated almost daily thru KXStudio's repos and the problem seems to vary in severity from day to day.

Reverting to an older or standard kernel seems to pretty much have no effect.

Kernel is 3.8.0-20-lowlatency

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks for listening...

Best way to clone.

We recently got a hackerspace up and running in town. The college that we rent out our building from donated us 20+ laptops. They are all identical, but most do not have hard drives. I have one setup exactly like I want all of the others set up and would like to clone it over to all the other machines. They will all be running Ubuntu 13.04 except for a handful that will have other distros for variety.
As a test I used Clonezilla Live to make a partition image and put it on an ssh server. On a second laptop I setup the partitions and then booted into Clonezilla Live and cloned the image onto the partition. After that was complete I used an Ubuntu CD to setup the MBR and it booted up exactly like I wanted.
There are a few parts I think (c/sh)ould be easier. I'd much rather just be able to point clonezilla to my ssh server and have the machine wiped and reloaded based on the image. I would prefer to not have to partition ahead of time or manually set the MBR to point to grub on sda1. Given that hard drives will be different sizes I don't think that a full drive image will be a good idea.
Does anyone with experience cloning a large number of machines have any experience that could help guide me to the best process for this. I really want to be able to take any machine and just reload it back to our defaults with no fuss. All data will be stored on a server for each user so data loss/backup is not an issue on these things.

CentOS hardware compatibility

Does the version of CentOS included with the latest version of FreePBX Distro work with an old Tyan Tomcat motherboard? This has a 1.3 GHz Celeron and 512 MB of PC-133 SDRAM; it is installed in a "Penguin Computing" rackmount server.

When I start the installer, there are various messages about address conflicts and other such conditions; the messages scroll down so fast that I cannot read them all. After the installer reboots, I get a message about an install error. I have tried to install 4 times and I keep getting this error.

I saw a discussion which said that I should disable the Parallel port, but this did not help. The same discussion talked about illegal instructions, but the CentOS is identified as being for i386, so it should be instruction-compatible with the Celeron. There was also a mention about the CPU that is being used to run the program is not the same one which was used for the installation, but there is only one CPU on the motherboard, so the install and run CPU's have to be identical.

Ubuntu 13.04 Linux Can Outperform Apple OS X 10.8.3

Ubuntu Linux has matured quite nicely compared to other results in recent years. The open-source Intel Linux graphics driver stack has reached a rather nice point (and it's still improving to catch up to the Intel Windows driver), the EXT4 file-system generally runs better than Apple's Journaled HFS+ file-system for disk tests, and the other tests are mixed depending upon the operating system's preferred compiler tool chain and build environment.

Plenty more tests to come this month with the release of Ubuntu 13.04 being just around the corner...
