Moving.....Questions About U-verse Service

I am a U-verse customer, and we are moving to a city near by. When walking through the house we are purchasing during an open house, I noticed they had U-verse. One of the first things I look for when going through our house search, is the STB to see what provider they have. It's weird, I know, but that's just me. I saw that they had a U-verse STB in the family room. I plugged in the address on the U-verse site to confirm, and it shows they have U-verse installed.

I have the U-verse bundle, TV (U450), internet (Max Turbo), and phone. I don't know how far the U-verse utility box is from the house, because I haven't located it yet.

Will the distance the house is from the utility box determine whether I can or can't get U450? What about the ability to record up to 3 programs while watching a live program in the same time slot? Will distance affect that? The internet speed will probably be affected by the distance, correct?

P.S. I haven't met the owner yet, and probably won't until the deal is done, so I can't ask her what she has.

Uverse Internet with own 2WIRE 3600HGV?

I am trying to determine if I can buy my own RG for Uverse. I am only going to get Uverse internet.

The discussion in a previous post

http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r25363596-If-I-buy-a-2wire-3600HGV-2nd-hand

says that I won't be able to use the 3800s, which is required for Uverse TV. But I am not signing up for TV.

Has anyone signed up successfully for Uverse internet using their own 2WIRE 3600 (purchased outside of ATT)?

Why the VRAD (technical question)

They're sprouting like mushrooms. Near every traditional green AT&T interconnection box sprouts a 2nd nearby box with a VRAD. The VRAD box is sometimes across the street, but always nearby.

Apparently there's a cross connect cable to the VRAD. When someone signs up they find the wire in the old box, and wire it over to VRAD. If the customer discontinues U-Verse and switches to a competitive ISP, the cross connect wire is removed.

The question is why? Why can't AT&T design a new version of the switch box that terminates all incoming (from CO) wires, and outgoing (to homes) onto electronic switches. Now a flip of a switch could enable U-Verse (and disable competitive ISPs). It just seems like the wiring would be so much easier... what am I missing?

One box, electronic switching, easy expansion.

Motorola nvg510 constant dropped connections

Ive been using the NVG510 since I've switched to Uverse in 2012. Since then, my wireless has plunged. I cannot keep a solid connection when I'm on my laptop. I would be connected, then it would drop. I can still detect my router, but it just won't connect after a good 4-5 minutes. Ethernet works no problem, but its just the wifi. I am not too sure what could be the problem because I don't know much about tampering with the settings in the router.

I have only been with At&t since March 30th of this year....and since 6-09-13 my internet goes out after 9pm...and then comes on then goes out...every 2 minutes it seems..then when it comes back on it's only active for about maybe half that time...all of my lights remain green except the service light....and when I call them they give me the same steps I've already taken before calling them...and then they send a tech out...my internet works fine in the day time...I've tried explaining that to him..but because it works when he is here..he blew me off...but my connection goes out all night long...I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and found a solution...besides changing providers since where I live at&t is the only one I've found to come out here. This is beginning to frustrate me, mainly because they won't listen when I try to explain to them...either they don't care...or they don't know what I'm talking about and are in the wrong profession...

Static IP Block and 3801HGV

So, this comes up quite a bit--but there never seems to be anything that is proposed except for a Frankenstein *nix box at the edge to provide the DHCP-dance with the 2Wire modem.

Have a /29 from AT&T which allows for use of 5 addresses; however this really only means that behind my router I can use 1 address, as the gateway does not bridge or allow any traffic unless is comes from a separate MAC address.

Does anyone have any solutions that *may* work to allow for the real use of the /29 block I have?

Technical Support has told me that bridge mode will never be supported and to just put the devices straight behind the 3801HGV.

New Set Top Box firmware rollout

I was told that a new firmware for the Uverse STBs is supposed to start rolling out any day. Over 150 fixes and enhancements are on the list. Does anyone know when this will hit the DFW market? Can you force the upgrade or do you have to wait for the box to prompt you or will it just happen silently overnight?

There are a couple fixes I'm anticipating, especially the fix to shut off the blue HD light when the box is off and fixing the menu aspect ratio in certain instances for 4:3 screens.

i38hg 2 wire firewall & Foscam security camera

So I recently got Uverse internet and I am trying to get the modem to play nice with my Foscam camera.

I have done everything Foscan told me to but it seems the 2-wire is still blocking access.

What I have done is gone into firewall settings, added the camera's IP address and opened a port for it (8090).

I can see the camera locally over wifi so I know it's working.

I used a site (as per Foscam support suggestion) canyouseeme.org

I put in the camera IP as well as the port I.E. 1.1.1.1:8090 (but with the computers real IP) and it said it timed out.

Foscam then suggested turning off the firewall but I don't see a way to do that.

Any ideas? I really want this to work as I want to add some more cameras for security but not if I can't see them outside my network.

Incredibly easy 802.11N 5 Ghz dual band gigabit router setup

I have AT&T U Verse internet and phone and was running AT&T's 2-Wire wireless gateway and router. I had purchase a western digital My Book Live network media storage drive and plugged it in with ethernet cable to the 2-Wire. I discovered that my file transfer speed were so slow it took hours to transfer photo files.... something had to be done! The My Book Live drive is compatible with gigabit routers and the 2-Wire was not that. Also the display of photos on my DirecTV screen (through Media Share) was painfully slow as well.

So I researched solutions and read all kinds of complicated set up stories for running another router behind the 2-Wire. I'm here to report that all of that reading and research was for nothing because what I ended up doing was buying a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR3700v4) for $89. This was capable of taking advantage of my laptop's ability to connect using 802.11n.

Setup was a breeze! All I did was connect the NetGear to the 2-Wire's LAN port and then disable wireless on the 2-Wire and conifgure the NetGear Router in DMZplus mode to allow all applications. Then released and renewed the WAN IP address.
Both router setup up with DHCP. The 2-Wire then functions as a modem and assigns the WAN IP address to the Netgear router.
After the router was setup to get WAN IP from 2-Wire I switched DMZ back to Maximum protection and it works fine and all my ports are stealth now.

So now I am able to connect wirelessly on the 5 Ghz band at up to 300mbps and my wired ethernet LAN ports all indicate gigabit (green light).... this has solved my file transfer speed issues and my media share speed. Now I only wait minutes instead of hours to transfer files. Problem solved and setup could not have been easier.

New speeds coming

As you probably know by now, AT&T is going to start rolling out faster speeds in Dallas later this month as a testbed market for the newer speeds. Initially the faster speeds will come from pair bonding and later increases will come from line vectoring and increasing the frequency band to 17MHz. As part if the upgrade, we are phasing out iNIDs and using a newer RG being able to accepted 2 pairs. All new installs will be set up pair bonded so that if the customer ever decides to increase their speeds, they may do so without a tech visit. A tech visit will be required for upgrading to the higher speeds though. This new RG will now have 802.11N dual band and gigabit Ethernet. The lower 2.4Ghz will be used for your in home wifi while the 5Ghz band will be used for your wireless receivers. This eliminates the need for the WAP for the wireless receiver. The rollout will be needing many more technicians to make sure the secondary lines are where they are supposed to be and spliced properly. Be on the lookout for AT&T hirings around your area. The AT&T team here in California is looking for almost 500 new splicing techs and outside plant techs. Training all of these newbies will take some time and thus initial rollout will be slow but actively gain momentum in the coming months. We have got some great products to offer and we are very excited about the future!

DSL Training Errors/Link Retrains During Boot Only

What could be the cause of my modem either getting a DSL training error or link retrain(Or both) as it's booting up? Could it be that my signal is too high? After it finished booting, I never see one uncorrectable block and only see corrected blocks every 1-5 days. I wonder if the modem is starting to go insane. It's not really a major issue(Since it's just during boot up) but, I figured I would ask anyway. I seem to be getting correctable block bursts but based on my responses about that it may just be interference.

HUGE problem with customer service! Bad battery back up!

I'm trying to calm down to write this outrageous story of my customer service experience I had today on the phone with att.

For the past 2 weeks the battery backup unit that supplies power to the main ATT router that provides digital phone, internet and cable tv goes out twice a day! Makes a loud buzzing noise when it goes out and all the service is dead since it powers the main router. I've been woken up at 4am every morning to fix it.. so usually around 12-4pm it will die and then again around 12-4am.

Its a Belkin brand battery back up which is provided "By law" to keep the digital phone on so people can make an emergency call if needed when the power goes out.

This belkin battery backup was supplied and installed when we first got our service like 5 years ago and we never had a problem with it till now. It goes out twice a day and the only way I've gotten it to come back on is to turn it off and then back on and then smack it by tapping the bottom on the table and then the buzzing goes off and it powers back on.. service is returned within 3-4 minutes.

Now heres the story..

Wife finally gets around calling today on her day off after this has been going on for 2-3 weeks now. She just got done talking to them for the past 1 hour and 45 mintues. Talking to 5-6 different people about it and requesting to talk to someone else cause of the ridiculous responses she's gotten.

They don't seem to understand that the battery backup was supplied with the att service we paid for.

There telling her that the battery back up only has a 3 year warranty and that we would have to pay for a new one?

Just about everyone acts like its something we bought to power the main ATT router.

They have even transferred her on the phone to Belkin tech support and they did tests on it over the phone. That was outrageous!! Finally called back again and asked to speak to a supervisor or manager.

While talking to them they also did not feel like it was something that they would need to replace and it was up to us even though he was quoted saying that "By law" they have to supply battery back up to power the main router for the digital phone service.

So after going back and forth it seemed to me like there not allowed to replace the battery backup??? We had a cable box go out about a year ago and there was no problem getting that replaced. They overnighted us a new cable box and we put the old on in the box and used the pre-paid shipping label to mail it back to them through UPS. I found it strange that that was the way it was done and there was no main att customer service shop to take it in to but whatever.

They would not do that for us this time.. After all that she finally talked them into sending out a service guy to check the box out.. but had to ask over and over if he would replace the battery backup if it was found defective as she thought he said earlier on the phone that they would not replace it either way.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever dealt with ever! Never ever had a problem with the service prior in the past 5 years until this and this is the level of customer service i'm dealing with???

We talk them a million times that they supplied the battery backup.. The original installer put that box on there.. I didn't even know we had one till years later since its behind the couch! They don't understand that if the main battery backup is bad we cant use the service! Why would I pay for the service for Internet/cable/digital phone if I cant use it if there unwilling to replace the damn power to it???

We've threatened to cancel att since we cant use it and they don't seem to understand that its there power box!

The manager at the tech support for ATT was telling my wife that we should just remove the battery backup! How can the router work without power??? He didn't seem to understand that theres no power cord coming out of the att/Motorola router so how would that work??? Then said something like theres a way to change that but seriously??? Even if there was whats the point?? You have to supply battery backup to the main router so we can use the phone if the power goes out encase of an emergency!

So after all that my wife dont want to cancel the service but I don't see how we can use it cause it don't look like there going to fix the problem.

They say its something to do with the power lines in our house???? How is that when I don't have a power issues!!! No power outages and I power a huge entertainment setup that uses a lot of power and I trip no circuit breakers!

So tomorrow there sending a guy out to look at it.. Don't know what he's gona find as he's going to test the power in our house.

I keep telling my wife that he's not going to find anything wrong and there not going to replace it! He would have to sit here all day and wait for the box to turn off to see the problem.

I told the wife that we should just cancel the service and then re sign on and they would then give us a new router and battery backup.

Someone explain why we should pay for something that we did not buy and was supplied by att to power there main router that is used to suppliy there service????????????

U-verse Next Door, Not Here

Is is common to find that full U-verse (TV/Internet) is available to a neighbor that is 50 feet away on the same street (same side too), and not at your address? That is what AT&T is telling me. They say I "might" be able to get IP DSL for home business, but I don't know what that is and if it is faster than the 2.5 Mbps I get from DSL.

My neighbors said that they had to talk to 20 people at AT&T before they could AT&T to give them U-Verse. When it was installed, they said a "booster" was put in their garage. What kind of booster would this be?

Any suggestions?
