[General] Which service, Alltel/Verizon, HughesNet, WildBlue?

My head is spinning now that I've discovered EVDO. I've been reading everything I can find, and I'm more unsure than ever. I was ready to sign up for sat. My only service options seem to be Alltel (I know about the buy-out), Verizon, and the 2 sat systems, which seem to be universally hated. I wondered about supposed recent upgrades by the sat companies, but complaints actually seem to be up, with many outages. Everything I read says go EVDO if you can. But since Verizon bought Alltel, I assume the 5G cap will eventually be universal (not in Sprint coverage area).

I'm ready to do something but reluctant, because this will push me over the $200 / month figure for various kinds of connectivity, which is tremendously frustrating. I live 11 miles from the edge of the 2nd largest city in Michigan, and this is my only option to dump dialup. People much further out in the boonies, where I work, even have cable and/or wireless available. There is a local wireless provider, whose tower I can see from the street in front of my property, and they say they can't hit my house with the signal and have shelved plans to upgrade. I live within the typical DSL parameters, but AT&T splits the line to my street too many times for DSL bandwidth, and the tech I talked to said that was unlikely to change. So I get a 28.8 dialup (on a good day). With the extra expense of satellite, I would likely lose it during storms, which is what happens with my DirecTV signal. And this is west Michigan, where we have clouds and lots of rain/snow. Am I missing (not seeing) some other option?

I need to network 2 HP Pavilion notebooks for 2 adult users, not gamers, but would like to access you-tube, iTunes, some photo stuff, typical surfing, updating, etc. Both need to access work networks but not for large file transfers. One of the Verizon issues that seems to be out there is difficulty monitoring usage on routers, and company account monitoring available is of questionable accuracy.

We currently have ATT land line, Verizon cell, and DirecTV services. Should I do the Alltel trial period, if it's still available? Is it even worthwhile considering that option at this point? If I have to do sat, Hughes fap looks like a better bet, but the reviews of that are lousy. I saw that one poster suggested Verizon with cheap dialup as a backup for usage issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I had to dial in 5x to get up to 28.8 today. My thoughts about that are not appropriate for public discourse!

[ Equipment] Bad Wireless Card?

Hello,

First post. I'm sorry if this has already been asked. A few days ago my Verizon wireless started disconnecting right away, sometimes with in seconds. I have a Pantech UM 150 USB card. I checked my settings and they were the same. I reinstalled the program and even upgraded the software, no luck. I even erased my hard drive and reinstalled everything. Same problem.

It takes me 3 or 4 times to connect. I get all kinds of errors, like password types, PPP protocal errors, can't find remote server, etc, and if I get on it quits right away. If I try to connect with the Windows screen, it says the device can only be used with the VZAccess Manager even though I used to be able to. I disabled everything for the internal card I could think of.

I checked with the Verizon store and they said they don't have a service problem. They said they never saw this before, they thought the card might be bad, but they couldn't check it, and all they could do was give me the customer service number. The card is only 4 months old. I am running a 4 month old Vaio laptop with Vista. I never had this problem before. Any ideas?

Thanks,

WOW!!!What Happened?

Switched to Verizon on 6/30 after Hughesnet lost a satellite (IA6). Installed the UM150 into my laptop and hooked up to 130/60 with pings over 1000ms. I have lived with those since today. We made a short trip to Durango and was able to hook up at evdo revA :D. Just set my puter up back at home and now get revA 800/371 with 371ms. What happened since Mon. morning. Is there something I am missing with the modem? I see posts about a "ctrl d" menu but it asks for a password that I don't know. Can any one help?
Thanks

Hawaii Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess Questions

I am moving to Waikiki, Oahu (Honolulu) this year. There are many high rises in the area, and I am concerned that reception will be affected there. A guy from New York city has started topics concerning the high rise reception in NY, a while back. Is there a forum here that is specific to Hawaii? Better yet- Waikiki and Honolulu? I have a Verizon wireless phone plan, and I'm wondering if I can determine much by the # of reception 'bars' on my cell? A sales rep for Verizon said that this is a way to see whether BroadbandAccess will be that good or not.
I currently have Comcast and I am getting 10/1 speeds..Verizon promises speeds close to this I need a speed that is fast enough to watch youtube, tmz, videos w/o stalling. 10/1 is plenty fast, but I'm curious what the minimum speed is to achieve this?
FIOS is not available there yet. Should I go with cable instead? Please help!

*Also- I thought that BroadbandAccess was unlimited? 5GB for $60 per month? I have no idea what I use, except that I'm online about 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. I found a site that lists all of the ISP providers in Hawaii..but some are NOT offering service there..What ISP's are the most popular/best? thanks again!

I just looked at my bill and it shows that the terms and conditions are changing effective 9/8/08 due to some Arbitration crap. Can I cancel the lines with no ETF because the terms and conditions have changed?

[ Equipment] Best home antenna setup

I tried without success using a Sprint EV-DO setup (took 6 months to get the billing corrected with Sprint after I discontinued service) and had bought a special antenna for outdoor mounting. No big surprise but it did not improve the signal significantly.

I am interested in trying Verizon's EV-DO service and expect the same signal strength problems as I experienced with Sprint. I have a satellite dish on the roof directly above my office so there is a solid mounting point and existing HQ coax from the dish to a internal/infernal modem. I would like to replace the satellite dish with a EV-DO antenna and run the signal the 40 feet down into the office where I would use a amp to boost the received signal.

Is there a best antenna for this type of mounting? Is it possible to use the coax from the satellite to connect to the amp and EV-DO modem or do I need to do a new cable run?
I have only been able to find setups that are designed for truckers and their needs and the restrictions involved with their tractors. I don't have the same physical limitations for the antenna but do need a cable longer than the usual 48 inches.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Bying Palm Treo 3rd party & activating on Verizon

Hello,

I'm presently a Verizon Wireless subscriber, and have been for some time. Presently, I have a Motorola Razor 2, and I am in need of a smart phone in order to synch with Microsoft exchange at work to get my e-mail & keep track of my train wreck of a schedule.

I'm not eligible for my upgrade until next May. I was considering purchasing a Treo off E-bay and activating it under my current account. I've never tried something like this before, so I was looking for a little guidance.

I know to check the ESN with Verizon before I purchase to make sure it's a good ESN and I understand I will have to upgrade to a data plan.

My questions are;

1: Will purchasing a phone 3rd party, activating it in place of the one I presently have and ditching my Razor 2 trigger the ETF?

2: Would it make more sense to switch to another carrier with a 1 year contract, and then bop back over to VZW? I would like to avoid this, I'm very happy with my Verizon service.

3: Suggestion. I'm very open to it. The goal is to get a handle on my schedule and do it centrally via Outlook/Exchange through my employer's servers. Keeping everything in one spot is important.

Thanks for the help,
Bill
