[northeast] Comparison of FiOS Broadband Internet to Comcast Bla

Howdy. My wife is really putting on the pressure to switch high-speed Internet service, so I'm back considering switching to FiOS.

- I've currently got a 802.11n wireless router, and I understand that FiOS only provides a 802.11g wireless router. I understand also that there is a way to bridge the two, wiring my better wireless to their MoCa compatible router. Is that the case? (I need a couple more wired connections anyway. How many wired ports are in the router FiOS typically provides? Or should I plan on buying a hub?) Essentially, can I rest assured that switching to FiOS won't result in my 802.11n wireless devices experiencing a degradation in speed???

- I have Comcast Blast! service.... What can I reasonably expect in terms of improvement (or degradation) with regard to Internet service by switching to FiOS 25 Mbps/15 Mbps?

Got a call about my not reponding to email and checked -- problems here

In NOVA and noticed time outs on POP mail retrieval. Checked Web mail and either timeouts or very very slow loading of folders. Sent from another account which is usually received instantaneously and after over an hour still not received by Verizon.

FiOS installation questions...

I'm not sure I can ask these questions clearly but here goes...'-}}

A little background info first:

I live in a condo and Verizon has just recently completed the underlying work for FiOS in the complex and I am considering signing up for their triple play with broadband, tv and phone.

I currently have 2 POTS lines. My primary phone line has jacks in the livingroom, kitchen, bedroom and office/den. I had a second line put in when I got my first modem many eons ago and currently this line has my Verizon DSL (and I use that line to send/receive faxes via a filter). The second line only has one jack and it is in my office/den. I am considering keeping the second line as a POTS line.

Each condo has a utility closet outside at the back of my condo. Verizon installed stuff in each condo's utility closet which already had Comcast's cables and the condo currently has coax cable outlets in the livingroom and bedroom. I currently have Comcast tv and used to have Comcast broadband which used to run via coax from the outlet in my bedroom around the corner into my office/den to the Comcast broadband modem. My bedroom and den are at the front of my condo.

Questions:

1. For FiOS phone to work, it is my understanding that the installer will need to run a line from my utility closet to an existing jack (closest one is in the kitchen) which will somehow (automagically...'-}}) make not only that jack, but all jacks for that particular phone line/number (livingroom, bedroom, office/den), a FiOS phone line. Is this correct?

2. If I were to want to convert my second phone line into a FiOS phone line would the installer have to run a second line from my utility closet (back of the condo) all the way to the jack in the den (front of the condo) or could a jack for this particular phone line/number be installed in my kitchen and the second line run to just the kitchen?

3. Is it my understanding that Verizon removes the copper wire when installing FiOS phone. Is this necessary or can I request that the copper wire not be removed? I'm thinking that if I were to want to go back to a POTS line that I would not be able to do so (or if I were to sell my place, it leaves the buyer with fewer options).

4. I will want the FiOS wireless modem in my office/den (front of my condo, utility closet is at the back of my condo). Would I be correct in thinking that the wireless modem can use the coax outlet in my bedroom as I had used the Comcast broadband modem?

Thanks much!

Router/speed question

I have the 25/15 internet package. I did a speed test and noticed that my download speed is only about 16Mbps and my upload is about 12. Are there any settings I can adjust on my wireless card or modem that would allow me to get the 25/15 speed?

New FIOS Installation

I live in an old schoolhouse in a Boston suburb that was converted to condominiums in 1985. It is wired for cable and Comcast is our only choice at this point. I contacted the president of the condo association about FIOS, which is available in my town and right on my street, and has been for about 3 years now, although it was never brought into our building. She in turn contacted Verizon today. She notified me that Verizon told her that it was not in out building because nobody has requested it yet. I personally requested it quite a few times and was told that it wasn't available every time, but that is another issue. My question has to do with the installation. The condo president tells me that Verizon told her that all the wiring from the main junction box in the basement up to each unit, and all wiring in the walls of each unit belong to Comcast. Does this sound right? I would think that all wiring up to the main junction box is Comcasts, but after that from each tap to each unit and all wiring in the walls belong to the association and unit respectively. Can someone please clarify this for me? I told her this and she said that they told her that it didn't matter anyways, that all new wiring would have to be fished trough the walls into each unit . Can FIOS not work on regular cable wire (I assume it is RG59 or RG6)? Is it customary to run all new wiring when installing FIOS? That seems like a ton of work, especially to get the run into the upper floor units. I am hoping that there is an underground chase that Comcast used, but the condo owns, that would be used as a conduit from the street into the building. Any info on this subject will be greatly appreciated. I want to get as much info together as I can before contacting Verizon directly.

Is FIOS "dedicated" like DSL or "shared"?

I currently have DSL and am considering in going to FIOS. One of the reasons why I preffer DSL over Cable is that I have a dedicated speed & line, which is not influenced by others.

Does FIOS work like DSL or like Cable?

North Attleboro, MA FiOS Service

Verizon first came to my neighborhood about a month ago to start installing fios in town. They put up the large, beige distribution box at the beginning of my street along with several spools of fiber optic cable left hanging there. They left it that way for about 3-4 weeks, then they returned to do more work this past wednesday. The past few days just one truck shows up around 8:00am EST and leaves around noon. The guy has made some progress over the past three days. Here are some pictures of the work that has been done:

[net] FIOS Business with Static IP Verizon improperly blocks mai

:mad:Verizon has blocked all outgoing SMTP (TCP Port 25) for FIOS customers in Maryland. This incorrectly includes their static IP customers despite the fact that internal communications to support staff in their technical group say this is to only apply to Dynamic Customers. They have also published a support document on their website that clearly states this applies only to dynamic IP customers which reads:

"Will outbound port 25 blocking apply to all Verizon broadband customers?

Outbound port 25 blocking will be applied to FIOS and High Speed Internet services that use dynamic IP addresses. If you subscribe to a static IP address service, you will not be affected." http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/HighSpeed/General+Support/Top+Questions/QuestionsOne/124274.htm

We signed up for business class service with a static IP which we were assured was unfiltered. We specifically stated we would be hosting mail servers, in fact, Verizon even setup our PTR record for us. Their latest act was to send out a tech to verify we couldn't send traffic on TCP port 25 then give him the run around and had him call department after department.

This is unacceptable and has been going on for 4 days now. Any one else having this issue? Any Verizon techs who know how to get around this circular problem resolution avoidance routine that is Verizon FIOS support that could offer up any pointers?

I've had this service for 4 months now and this is the second such issue with FIOS and SMTP: Verizon also had my static IP listed with SORBS DNSBL as a dynamic IP when it was static when we first started with FIOS in July, this took a few days to get SORBS to correct this.

Just to clarify - do not confuse this with either residential or dynamic IP service. This is Business service with a 28 block of static IPs, 16 IP addresses assigned to our account. We have verified all DNS records using mxtoolbox and all tests pass. We are not on any known reliable blacklists. And this has been verified to be a port filtering issue by Verizon. On outgoing SMTP traffic, we send a SYN packet and never receive a response. With any other outgoing traffic there is no connection issue.

Their recommendation is to change to TCP port 587. That is not an acceptable solution for a server. That is an alternate port for authenticated access, E.g. client access. I am hosting a legitimate mail server for more than 1,000 users on a domain that has been active for 11 years.
