[southwest] Moving before 1 year contract is up?

How much does it cost to move before my one year contract is up? I will be moving to an area that has FiOS (for sure, I'm not giving this up :D) and I don't want to break out of the contract. I'm just trying to plan for expenses, and am curious to know how large the install fee will be...

[northeast] Problems downloading emails

[I posted already about this problem along with one about my upload speeds being too slow. Turns out my upload speeds are fine. My problem with downloading emails remains however. Am hoping can shed any light on this so I am starting a new thread with a new subject specifically for the email problem.]

Starting a few days ago, I am having repeated problems trying to download my Verizon emails with either OUTLOOK EXPRESS, or a spam filtering program called MAILWASHER.

Although I can get the emails eventually from my Verizon accounts, both Outlook and Mailwasher continually hang up and time out trying to connect to incoming.verizon.net and I have to keep trying and trying and trying to get all emails from my multiple Verizon accounts.

I have been on FIOS for about 2 years now and although I've had similar intermittent issues in the past, I've not seen anything like this (been going on for days now).

I get errors like "Operation timed out, no response from the mail server", or "Your POP3 server has not responded in 60 seconds would you like to wait another 60 seconds", or "A timeout occured while communicating with the server Account 'xxxx", Server incoming.verizon.net, protocol POP3, port 110, secure SSL, Error no.0x800CC19".

This is happening on both of my PCs. Nothing has changed on either of them to explain this. My internet connection to both in general is OK. I have contacted Verizon support and the only thing they could tell me was "to increase the timeout setting in Outlook Express". So yeah I've increased OUTLOOK to the maximum (5 minutes), MAILWASHER has no setting to adjust, but that is besides the point - something is wrong with the way my PCs are trying to reach the servers or how the servers are (not) responding.

Anyone else having similar problems???? Any suggestions for things to look at to diagnose this further? Something has changed somewhere to cause this but I can't figure out what it is (yet).

Thanks very much,

Luigi Vercotti

new availability

I saw Verizon trucks at my main road on Dec 1, thinking they were laying Fios lines in my area. I check the FTTP construction for December and sure nuff, my road was on the list.

It's still not available on the check availability site, so my question is how much longer will I have to wait till they actually get it working?

[southeast] Getting ready to order -- pre-install questions

We're getting ready to order FiOS (phone and Internet only), but there are a few things I want to get straight before we place the order. If any of these have recently been answered elsewhere, my apologies; please just direct me to the prior posts.

1. We don't want to use the Verizon-supplied router; we would prefer to use our own router. What do I need to tell Verizon when ordering in order to make sure the installer sets things up this way?

2. Our house is not wired with coax or ethernet cable. We would prefer to have the installer use ethernet cable. Again, how do we need to tell Verizon this when placing the order?

3. Our power and phone lines are currently run underground from the telephone pole to our house. When I spoke to a Verizon rep on the phone, they said there would be no charge to have the fiber run underground as well since our existing lines are underground. Can anyone confirm or refute this from experience?

4. If I order on the web (in order to get a discount) will it be possible for me to provide Verizon with the information in items 1-3?

5. Any other advice or warnings would be appreciated.

[southeast] Bridging a FIOS Westell router with a Linksys router

I have the need for extending my wireless network to another location in my home. The devices that require hook-up are Ethernet only.

I have Verizon FIOS with a Westell router and several Linksys model routers as well. The current solution I have tried is as follows:

Westell Ultraline Series 3 A90-9100EM12-10 rev B (firmware 1.02.00.04) connected to the main FIOS line and broadcasting a wireless network on channel 1. WEP 64-bit security is enabled currently.

I have installed Tomato 1.27 on a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1.

I have tried configuring Tomato into both Wireless Client and Wireless Bridge modes. Both configurations have had SSID, WEP Password, and channel entered into the configuration (I give the client config a new subnet).

Tomato seems to indicate that the router is connected to the wireless, but it is unable to acquire a lease to the FIOS router (it just hangs at renewing). Rebooting, releasing, and renewing does not resolve the problem.

Do I have an incompatibility issue here? Is this a problem with the Westell or do I have a configuration problem? What other options might be available to me?

Different router

So I have my own wireless router, can I replace verizons wireless router with something else. I hate that I have to use it. The verizon router connects via coax but I could switch it over the cat5 if that make a difference.

What do you do to keep kids safe while online?

Hi all,

Obviously keeping them off the computer is one way, but as my kids get older and start needing to access the internet for school research, I need to start thinking of ways of keeping it safe for them. I noticed that the Actiontech router Fios does provide some kind of filtering tool and what not. Is this the best way to go or should I be looking at some kind of special software to purchases? Your responses are greatly appreciated.

[northeast] Lost power, ONT and my UPS.

At 3:30am this morning I lost power. I got up at 4am and found out about it. Apparently lot of wind caused tree to down a wire somewhere in the neighborhood.
Anyway, I noticed that the ONT knew that power was shut off even though my UPS that the ONT was plugged into was operational supplying power to my router and voip adapter as well. The ONT had a power light blinking and the ethernet was not lite. So I unplugged the ONT's battery plug and plugged it back in and I had internet at least for my VOIP.

I guess I have to keep in mind that when power goes out like this the ONT will sense that it did even though my UPS that the ONT is plugged into is supplying power looked like it is operational.
Anyone experience that?
