Think it is the Economy?

I was in the Giant grocery in Greenbelt and they posted that as of next weekend they will no longer be a 24 hr store. The nearby Shoppers in College Park already did away with the 24 hour thing. I really don't have a problem with it but I expect that just like the State and local government furloughs that are happening it is an attempt to get a handle on costs in these tough times.

Tough games this week.

Every time I switched to the Skins game, their offense was on the field. Good day for Portis.

Can't even comment about the Cowboys right now. Still wondering wtf happened.

Navy 5 Miler

Anyone running the Navy 5 Miler tomorrow?

I'll be there (bringing up the rear most likely) as part of my efforts to spend less time on the sofa / chair.

Course looks good: West Potomac Park, down around Hains Point and back. It will be my first "race" ever, so I'm planning to take an easy pace and enjoy the scenery while I huff and puff.

Football weekly thoughts

Skins, Ravens, Terps all playing this weekend ... expecting to see a sure win, an iffy one, and a loss. Not great expectations unfortunately.

Start with the win... Terps should have no trouble handling Virginia, as long as they don't play down to the competition like they did with Middle Tenn. Va is pretty bad this year so far.

The iffy... is Washington. Defensive players out are Taylor and Springs... while Skins can win without them, think there won't be enough rotational rest, and if Westbrook can play, the Eagles are definite favorites.
I also don't like what I'm seeing from Marcus Washington... don't know if he is deteriorating with age or if he is nursing a nagging injury, but he is looking a lot slower to me than what I remember. I do expect Campbell to show more progress in the West Coast offense, so it is iffy... Moss needs a super game but hasn't showed it in the past against the Eagles.

The loss is the Ravens. Several reasons for this, the top of which is they just played the Steelers on Monday.
I go back a long ways :o and remember the old BALTIMORE Colts battles with Pittsburgh... seemed like no matter which team won, they both lost the next week, too beat-up to be really effective. And Mon night was one of those wars. Ravens came out better... Steelers lost 2 starters for the year, but I know Ravens are nicked also. Still have 3 defensive starters out (Gregg/Rolle/Landry), and while they can win without them, it becomes a substitution/rest thing... the defense should handle Tennessee offense pretty well, my concern is the binds that the offense could put them in. I can't see the Ravens effectively running against the Titans, Hainesworth in the middle is a beast. And I saw Todd Heap being used primarily as a blocker last week, negating one of our better offensive weapons in order to help the tackles block...
Ravens could win it, I just can't see where the points are coming from, and with an unrested defense, not expecting scores there.

Final thoughts on last week's Raven loss. I give the goat of the game award to Yamon Figurs. He was a dancing fool.
First step was backwards on a number of catches. Brought out kickoffs from 5 yards deep in the endzone (and was lucky to make the 15). Saw him running backwards across the field a number of times (looking for a lane). But that that did was change blocking angles for teammates. Real easy to get penalties for 'block in the back' or a "reach and grab" as the players coming down change direction in reaction to Figurs. I'd say that his actions on the field cost us at least 60yds, and I'm assigning him more than half the blame for the penalties.
Oh he can be exciting, but there are players who can manage to keep both teams in the game at the same time, and he was one of them. I hope somebody sat him down and had a long talk with him.
