Beta: Exede VOIP

Article: Exede Tunes in US Satellite Internet

A future Exede Internet and voice bundle would include home number portability, 911, caller ID -- "all the bells and whistles" and offer price savings when compared to a conventional landline bundle. Scalpone wouldn't talk about how much a bundle might cost, but a stand-alone Internet offering is currently priced at $50 per month.

[Exede] Ethernet Throttle Control

I have several browsers, but Chrome's home-page is set to SB-2's Modem/IFL Cable Status.

On previous and recent SB-2's firmware, when uplink was around 25 Kbps, Chrome was exceedingly slow at showing this page's content. But, with uplink speed restored, it was exceedingly fast.

I'm not aware of ViaSat's ABCs of SB-2s operation, but these observations suggest one means of throughput control is via Ethernet.

ViaSat's NOC can reduce throughput, but if this means is used to throttle all users on a beam during peak demand, I wonder how SB-2 knows when to terminate this previous command. Maybe a power re-boot....maybe NOC sending out "cancel" command.

In this thread, http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28219396-Riverside-Phoenix-10.74.101.17 , I have not focused on relationship between power reboots and when they were done, but next time Chrome is exceedingly slow, I will.

Hence, if your uplink is slow during non primetimes, shut down your SB-2 unit. computer, and your router-if applicable-for say 5 minutes; then power up SB-2 unit, and wait for three solid lights on it, no blinking...then power up your router and wait for fourth light to be solid, then turn on your computer.

[Exede] Considering switching from GEN4 to Exede12

We have been a customer with Hughes for about a year now, and its been a headache ever since it was installed. We now have the GEN4 $99 plan which boasts 15Mb down/2mb up and a 20Gig bandwidth limit. Our download speeds rarely even break 5Mbps, and during peak hours are often less then 1Mbps.

We have spent hours during countless calls to customer support, with them always telling us it is a general outage that will be fixed within 2 hours. WE have even went so far as to call the corporate office, who are offering to let us out of contract early. We have been holding up hope that things will get better, but that does not seem to be true.

Would switching to Exede12 be a good move? How is their reliability, and do they achieve near the advertised speed most of the time?

And pros/cons would be great as we are not looking to jump from one bad service to the next. Satellite is the only option where we live, except of course dialup.

[general] Large Familys and FAP

It's been 10+ years (and 6 or so kids) since I was last on (Hughes) satellite in central Ohio. Now we're in NE Oklahoma and satellite looks to be our only reasonable option. We've been on cellular via Sprocket, but they sold to us without checking a coverage map, and realized a year later that they shouldn't have sold us service. At least they're letting us out of the contract with no ETF.

At any rate, with 3 teenagers, 3 smartphones, 4 iPods, an iPad, three computers and 4 game consoles, can we really get by with a 15Gb cap? I know (and the kids know) that they won't be gaming online any time in the next few years. But there's a lot of YouTube videos played during the day. As I consider our online usage though, other than game updates and videos, that's really about it for heavy-duty browsing. Nobody livestreams anything like TV shows or even Pandora. Just forums and Instagram and YouTube.

Any large families here getting by on satellite? What have your experiences been? I don't know that I ever got fapped when I was on DW/Hughes before. How badly do they throttle you? I seem to recall that they don't publicly announce the throttle amount, but what's been the practical result?

[WildBlue] Wildblue is the worse isp there is

We got wild-blue because there was only one other isp where we lived and they wanted 150.00 to connect us and wild-blue only wanted 60.00. I ordered the service on a Friday and was told some would come and install between 12 and 4 that Monday. Well Monday comes and we are waiting and at 4 no one had shown up so I call them back and they don't know where the tech is so they give me another number to call to find out so I call that number and was told he is running late and is on his way. So 30 minutes pass and still no one was here so I call back and I am told he should be here and they call and put me on hold then comes back and says he got help up but he was on his way now and should be here within 10 minutes. I wait another 30 minutes and still no show so I call back finally after calling half a million times the tech gets to my house at 8:30.

While he is installing the service he cuts through my electrical so I loose electric and there is nothing I can do about it because of the time it is unless I want to pay a lot to get someone out at that time of night. Finally everything is hooked up and the tech is gone around 11:00. The first couple of days was great on the internet but then is got lousy. We keep loosing connection I can not go to a lot of websites because out ip address is showing we are in another country so we can not access a lot of web sites in America because of this or the websites load up in another language.

Without streaming or anything in a 2 week time actually less then 2 weeks we hit out 10 gig limit. We are always getting disconnected and when there is something that I have to get done online I am unable to do it and I have to go to the library to use the internet or to a families house when I should be able to use my own internet. The 60.00 a month they charge is to much for the service they provide. I should of spent the 150.00 to of gotten service with the other ISP at least with them it would of been half the price and there would not of been a limit. Now we are stuck in a 2 year contract and can't get out of is. From the beginning of getting wild-blue it has been crappy. DO NOT GET WILD-BLUE NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY MAKE IT SOUND.

Riverside-Phoenix: 10.74.101.17

.
.
When examing this user's Testmy results, and knowing after a tech came out this Friday and peaked the dish (with testmy results going from good to bad there ater, http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28196326-Upload-64-Kbps ), these results and data shown there in that thread would tend to rule out a defective TRIA, I would assume.

When I first came onboard Exede-5 in March 2012, I was using the 10.74.101.1 pathway without issues.

At a later time, I switched routers and was placed upon and still am on 10.74.101.17 pathway. Some months ago, I had a discussion with an Exede-12 user who I believe was on this same path, and he had issues also. If I recall correctly, his Gateway was in Texas, but he was being piped to Phoenix server.

As speculation, I suspect strongly something is amiss on this 10.74.101.17 pathway, and/or equipment engaged in this pathway.

Since the upload timing suggests at times a throttling device is involved, I can only wonder if programming, connections, or faulty hardware is the culprit.

I did an upload after midnight tonight, it was a whooper 13 Kbps. I sincerely hope ViaSat will eradicate this issue in the near future.

Something is different between these pathways:

10.74.101.1

and

10.74.101.17

[Exede] Software Looping

Tonight, SB-2 was apparently trying to acquire updated firmware

Software Version	UT_1.5.2.0.10

but, it was apparently trying after DHCP handshaking. In this process, it was cycling thru (like a reboot) several times until I pulled the plug on SB-2 unit.

Several hours later, I powered off my ASUS RT-N10+, powered up SB-2, and let it do its thing until all three lights were on solid...three lights only....solid...no blinks.

It took some 5 minutes or so, then I powered up router and saw this new firmware.

I wonder how many times this SB-2 modem would have been looping thru the reboot cycle if power was left on...and it was advancing the Transmitted Byte count more so than Received Bytes...that's why I powered it off. I really doubt those Transmitted Bytes happened in reality.

I wonder why this firmware download can not happen before DHCP handshaking, and then clear the byte counters before DHCP handshaking?

Exede-5 vs Hughes SPACEWAY 3

For those not living under ViaSat-1 or Gen-4 beams, there are/were two options....Exede-5 vs Hughes SPACEWAY 3.

After reading several posts over at Wildblue World, which suggests Exede is the best option going, if available, I wonder if those who blow their horn that way are fully informed.

In general, for Exede-5, posts over there tend to suggest it works OK in daytime, but there are still primetime slowdowns in at least several beams. And since Exede bumped up Wildblue legacy users's speeds, both now may have similar experiences on more loaded beams....OK in day hours, and slow at night.

How about those SPACEWAY 3 users in locations where VS-1 and Gen-4 don't shine...happy or tolerant customers?

[WildBlue] Computer application for signal strength

Hello - I'm not a member but I'm checking into some information for a friend at a campground we are in. He has Wildblue and each time he has to move his RV in the park he has to call the installer and pay 50-100 to have them come out. They told him that he couldn't do it himself. My question is this: I used to have HughesNet and someone came up with an application for installation on their computer for signal strength so that we could set the dish up ourselves. You could turn your speakers on and as you moved the dish you could hear it calling out the strength. Has anyone come up with an application for your service that can be installed on his computer.

Thank you for any information you can give me as he's in a two year contract and can't afford to keep paying to have someone tweak it for the signal everytime. Actually he only moves about 3-4 times a year but that builds up.

[Exede] Exede-5 & Adblock Plus

Those using Exede-5, or even Exede-12, who are not receiving a complete page download within about 5 seconds may want to use FireFox branded browsers and install Adblock Plus addon.

As discussed in this thread,

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28242036-Exede-AcceleNet-Traffic-Bottlenecks

When AcceleNet server (blade) can not send the full page (and its content) to your browser, your browser may have to fetch all the missing elements, which can consume lots of time.

If your upload speeds are quite low, this will be experienced...long waits for a page to load.

By using Adblock Plus addon, this will reduce some of the elements from being fetched by your browser. I would also suggest Flashblock.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/flashblock/?src=search

Based upon my experiences...YMMV...depending upon your upload/download speed on your beam.

[general] Proof that the meters are more a hindrance

Today i have proof that the meters make the total user experience very slow and very buggy.

[att=1]
This speed was taken 3 weeks ago when the meters where down around 3:00 PM, as you can see a nice 2.4MB/s share ratio was 1.2.

[att=2]
This was taken just a few minutes ago around 12:20 AM during the LNFZ.

This may not look like much but over the past year of this service I'v noticed that when the meters are off the network has less issues less DNS errors, less slowdowns, smoother surfing.

And having on specific time a day when people can download all they want makes a few people very agitated. As it is much faster during the day than at night. As during the day less people are on as most of them are at work, school, Etc so there is less traffic on the bird. During the 3 month period this year of frozen meters i'v come to the conclusion that when given unlimited bandwidth most people don't go hog wild with it instead they enjoy just watching a Youtube vid or HD movie when they want. They don't constantly do it
