Any experience with Cricket Wireless Broadband?

Can anyone provide feedback on Cricket's $40.00/month Wireless Broadband service? They began advertising this heavily in the Las Vegas NV area last weekend. It uses a small USB plug-in modem.

I'm curious about the real cost of start-up ("requires new activation AND up to a $25 activation fee"), the true monthly cost ("taxes and fees extra"), and some of their disclaimers:

* Throughput may be limited if use exceeds 5GB per month.
* Internet browsing does not include, "Machine-to-machine connections, "Peer to peer (P2P) connections."

They state that there's no contract term, no security deposit, and no "carrier's" early termination fee.

I'd just want it for home use, and to save a few bucks over the $52/mo I currently shell out for cable broadband.

Thanks!

[EvDO] HSDPA Vs. EvDO

Hi,

I had a few questions about these Verizon's EvDO service. Right now I am running on AT&T's 3G network with an iPhone but I am considering switching to Verizon's network when my contract is up next year.

So far I know that technically AT&T's HSDPA is capable of faster speeds, especially when they push out the 7mbps upgrades. The coverage in California seems pretty well since I almost always have a 3G signal except in houses and buildings. But most of the time when I run a speed test my speeds range from 400-800kbps. In San Francisco last week I had a full 3G signal but was getting around 170kbps on my speed test.

So here are a few of my questions:

1. Does EvDO work pretty well through buildings? Will my data speeds come to a crawl if I'm behind a wall?

2. How about in highly populated cities? They advertise their network as most reliable. Do they mean I will usually get close to advertised speeds?

3. My 3G connection on AT&T supports voice too which results in a higher quality call. My friend on his iphone comes in loud and crystal clear. Does Verizon's do the same or does it only use CMDA for voice? How does the voice quality compare? Can you use both internet and phone at the same time on a device?

4. Can EvDO be upgraded to support faster speeds too or is Verizon pretty much done at this point and focusing on LTE?

Thanks for your help!

[Fixed] Canopy - drops out every 1-3 min...help

My WISP just did a tower change and upgrade, after which I had to have them out to re-align my 900mhz antennae, which has worked fine for 3 years. When the service guy got here he couldn't believe that I was ever getting service in the first place, and moved the set up to a tripod/pole on the peak of my roof. Under the old set-up I was getting a power level of around -76dBm.The new location is better, ranging between -65 to -72 dBm, with the jitter jumping between 1-4 (sometimes up even higher). Problem is that the unit drops to -114 dBm every couple of minutes, rescans, re-registers, and all is good for another few minutes.

Example:

Subscriber Module Stats
Session Status : REGISTERED VC 35 Rate 1X/1X
Registered AP : 0a-00-3e-94-cf-a5
RSSI : 1744
Power Level : -65 dBm
Jitter : 2
Air Delay : 55 approximately 1.53 miles (8085 feet)

Subscriber Module Stats
Session Status : REGISTERING VC 0 Rate 1X/1X
Registered AP : n/a
RSSI : 7
Power Level : -114 dBm
Jitter : 0
Air Delay : 504 approximately 14.03 miles (74088 feet)

Subscriber Module Stats
Session Status : REGISTERED VC 35 Rate 1X/1X
Registered AP : 0a-00-3e-94-cf-a5
RSSI : 1739
Power Level : -65 dBm
Jitter : 4
Air Delay : 55 approximately 1.53 miles (8085 feet)

Is this a problem with the new tower location, aim of my antennae, new interference, or something they need to fix on their end? I don't know much about this technology, so any help/input would be appreciated.

[Fixed] Question about Canopy Wireless Technology

After dealing with a local WISP for 2 years, and having the run around for that time, I'm extremely sour when it comes to wireless internet.

Another local company though, started a year ago, uses Motorola Canopy, on the 900 MHz frequency, boasting 3Mbps down, 1Mbps up, NLOS gear, and 100 to 200ms, all for 39.99 a month, static IP being optional for an additional 10 dollars.

Along with that, there's no contract, it's month to month, and the first month is completely free if we dislike the service for any reason.

Now like I said, I'm extremely close minded to the whole wireless scene now after my issues with the first company, but everything that was WRONG with that company, bad/no signal 24/7, zero customer support, 2 year contract with a ridiculous price locked in (60$), and crappy equipment, is negated in this new company, boasting nothing but positives across the board.

Then I read the posts on this site, about the 500 different things that can interfere with a signal so easily, so then my concern turned in to a nightmare of thoughts of what to expect.

Is it really THAT easy and common for a stupid object like a baby monitor or cordless phone to completely handicap my signal?

I mean I gotta think logically on this, why would a business man, good OR bad, put up a tower and offer service near an interfering frequency?

The tower is just over 1 mile away, and if I stand on my roof I can see it clearly, so LOS shouldn't be an issue, but after reading these horror stories, I'm so paranoid that, even if it works now, some neighbor who couldn't close her legs will end up having a baby monitor soon, ruining my experience, and leaving my powerless.

I need some information, and if you need more information, let me know.

The site is www.winchesterwireless.com and as far as I could see, there's no hits when I search them on dslreports, but the technology their using does have hits.

Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any info/tips you can offer!

I thought it would be interesting to share this information with other members.

I'll go first:

Speed: 768/256
Price: $49.99
Location: Comwavz/WatchTV in Northwest Ohio

Note: Excellent customer service! :) (I'm hoping for faster speeds in the future. ;) )

[Fixed] Whats wrong with my canopy?

I think my canopy is a 2.4 one, I looked at the setting and it said 2.4 but I couldnt get any further cause I dont have password. My canopy unit would work fine during the winter at all times until the leaves grew in during the summer and blocked my signal. Then we put the canopy on a 50 ft tower and it got signal back. Now when it gets cold the canopy gets slower. During the day it can play internet radio fine but as the temperature goes down the internet radio starts cutting out. I dont think its the unit since it got replaced. I think it could be the cable doesnt work good in cold weather. The old cable might have been better for winter weather. Also the cable is burried so that might be causing it too. I dont know for sure what the problem is but I want to fix it. Could it be their equipment doesnt work good during the cold? I didnt use to be this way until they upgraded their network.

Data cards?

DSL and cable are not available here. If they were, I would not be on this forum.

But the Internet on my phone works perfectly. My cellphone provider recently began providing a data card. It plugs into a USB port.

I was wondering if, since the web on my phone works at my home, do you think the data card would?
