d-link 655

i was looking at this in the store but wanted to see some reviews. I notice the router goes all the way back to 2007 but had firmware updates since. I am aware of it only supports 2.4 N but that is OK for my needs. It also claims IPV6 support. However doesn't the modem ALSO have to support this ? is this router any good or should i get something else. Note: i have been using a Linksys WRT54G without problems but was thinking of upgrading for the N support as my computer, iPhone and iPod support it. Computers in other rooms are G only but thats not an issue long as i leave G enabled. Also i am working with a 3 meg DSL connection for "backhaul" however i may go to cable for faster one day.

wireless problem

My connection seems to keep breaking from my netgear router.. in windows 7 is shows as having a excellent signal full bars but as soon as I start something like 3 heavy downloads it breaks the connection like every 20 sec to a minute.. Over and over again...

I don't understand what's going on?

Router is netgear WGR614v9.. I can confirm that when it drops it kills the wireless to all the devices with utorrent going like about ever 20 seconds or so.

ok seems fine so far with DHT turned off.

About My 1 legged Cricket

Due to being a disabled veteran on a limited income I was one of the earliest cricket customers at their inception, being 100% P&T I am on a extremely tight budget. So I chose criche only package they had was there $40 bucks a month plan. Happy to get it in the bojacks I installed their wireless modem. Trying to keep up with current Technology with their modem was next to impossible. Recently I bought a wireless Epson printer,All in one. Or something like that.
Twice I tryed to send a Web page to it, 6ft. from me, and no luck, finally I was able to see the printer on my Toshiba laptop, but Cricket would shut me down saying that it appears I was trying to tether my machine. Well I was to my printer, you mean for $45.00 a month I can't even do that?
Totally blown out of the Water!

New Westell and FiOptics Service, Port Forwarding (xbox)...

I have had FiOptics service for about 5 months now and had Cincinnati Bell install it along with cable. I gat 50M out the door perfect connected to the router with a Ethernet. (Westell A90-750160-07). I do speed tests and get about 13-17 with wireless and 47-50 with connected. Well I want to port forward my xbox and just get a real nice clean connection. I did it once long ago on a old linksys and have no idea what I am doing now.

Ok so now back to this, first does anyone know anything about this router. There is literally two pages on google when it is searched. I cannot find fireware I cannot find anything on it. There is one post about port forwarding and that is the only post, and semi unhelpful.

I also just read about having the a westell set as a "dumb modem" which would just simply act as a bridge (it takes phone cable from the fiber interpreter box so no switching out). then i can use this nice Belkin Pre-N and get my full 50M over my wireless.

So my questions in review, anyone know anything about the router? Anyone know about port forwarding on this router? What about bridging?

-side notes: I have exhausted everything so any help might do. I read that N is the faster potential wireless up to 300M running about 100 practical, and b and g are around 20 and a? is around 5. That why i ask to route to the belkin Pre N, this westell is only a b or g. I am a comp sci major but I am more win32 C application programming so Internet is not my specific lingo but I can understand what you're saying, if you know what you are saying.

Thanks in advance!!!!

Different Twist on Router Needs

My router is located in an office/den in the extreme right corner of my house. It is just about impossible to get whole house wireless coverage from that location. Even if I could, 3/4 of the signal would be outside my house and into the neighbor's house/yard. But, I have a central location where a good wireless AP gives me whole house coverage without sending most of the signal outside of my house.

My current router is a DIR 655 with wireless turned off. Performance has been flawless. I haven't had a glitch in months (maybe years). But the 655 is getting a little old and I have been wondering what to get as a replacement. All the focus there days seems to be on wireless performance. I don't need wireless performance on a router, just good router performance and features.

So, I would appreciate any advice about a router to replace the DIR 655, router specs, stability and performance very important but wireless performance of no importance.

Thanks, Jim

Setting DNS servers in router....

I have a Cradlepoint MBR 1000 router I am trying to set the DNS servers to something other then what my ISP prefers me to use (Centurylink), after reading the manual several times, I have yet to discover where to add this info to the router. This router will switch between connections such as an a cellular connection if the other connection fails. I see an area where I can add them for the air card but not for the router itself. If anyone has this router and knows where to add the info, I would be greatly indebted.

Linksys E4200 v2 against Netgear WNDR4500

I purchased the Linksys E4200v2 and was unable to get an internet connection on my laptop in 5GHz mode. I called Linksys and they had me change some settings in the Router login page. I now get a 5GHz connection, but when I do a speed test I get nowhere near the 30mbps I'm supposed to get.

I borrowed a friends Netgear WNDR4500 and set it up right next to the E4200v2 and with the laptop in the same place and at the same time as when testing the speed of the Linksys I get a full 30mbps download reading.

My question is considering these are both companies top of the line wireless routers, and that the compete with each other, do you think there might be something defective with the E4200v2? I just wonder how they can have such different results.

TP-Link modem and router help pls.

Hi,

Am wondering if anyone could please help me as i have tried everything to no success.

I have a TP-Link TD-8616 ADSL2+ modem and I bought a TP-Link TL-WR841N which i have managed to setup up properly, i am able to connect to the wireless and get internet access. However the minute i walk out of the room or a few meters away i am disconnected and i can't re-connect, i get the "windows cannot connect to TP-LINK" message. The signal strength in on excellent and i know it works because when i stand near it, it works perfect.

I phoned TP-LINK technical support who were pretty useless and couldn't fix the problem. I tried changing the channels but same thing happens and i am out of ideas!!!??

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

125km or 80 miles link wifi setup

hi all
we will have a 125km or 80 miles link using the microtik rb435 board and the dbii f52n pro (atheros 9220 chip) cards, before we start with all the ACK
timing problems and packet sizes tests, can somebody provide us with a
configuration file that works for over 110km (from my reading at that
distance we will run in some troubles).. we have a complete free freznel
zone 60% and all, and we did allready a 72km (45 miles) link so aiming
antennas and such stuff is not our problem.
One detail, we want to get abouth 40mb troughput, so 20 or 40 Mhz should
be necessary and we will use the 5 Ghz band,
thanks in advance.

RT-N66U or RT-N16

Pros or cons on each? Pricing is $85 after rebate for the 16U and $180 for the N66U.

The router is needed for streaming to 3 iPod Touches (G), 2 tablets (N), 2 laptops (G), 2 laptops (N) and miscellaneous other small devices like three phones, 4 nooks, etc. We stream hi-def video sometimes simultaneously to three or four different devices.

Will the N66U be overkill? What are the main differences and do you think it'll really make a difference in my usage? The router will sit on the main level (just about middle of the house) and will need to feed the basement and the upstairs as well.

What are the best choices for wireless n routers?

As the title states Im in the market for a wireless N router, im finally upgrading from my linksys wrt54g. Im looking for range, speed and security (and I wouldn't mind usb and something with tweakable features. I have been looking at the new linksys e4200 but newegg buyers have a lot to complain about the newer linksys models ( overheating, dropped signals, inconsistent speeds etc.) and I have seen somewhat similar complaints about Netgear models. So I come to find out what you guys are using any help appreciated

Asus RT-N16 performance

My question is kind of related to this thread http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r26804105-RT-N66U-or-RT-N16 but I didn't want to hijack that thread so I'm asking here. :)

I currently run an ASUS WL-520gU router with Tomato firmware in the house and it's starting to bog down a little. So I think I need to upgrade.

Wired:
I do some video streaming around the house, all via wires, but it goes through the router, so I want to make sure my new router is decent enough so it won't bog down when passing that traffic. I have some DirecTV receivers passing video between each other, a Blue-ray player downloading Netflix occasionally, same Blue-ray player streaming a movie or photos from a Windows Home Server occasionally. I also copy large files from a desktop to the WHS occasionally.

Wireless:
At the same time I want to make sure I have "N" wireless to support 3 laptops in the house. All these laptops are "N", kind of low end machines and not real new so I don't think any support "a". Of course 3 Android phones too. :)

I figure the Asus RT-N16 looks like a good fit for me.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320038

Is this a decent router for performance, and if not can anyone suggest something else for under $150?

DHCP Hell

Hello All,

I've had similar problems for past year. I have a wireless network with a Netgear 3700 w/ DD-WRT latest version. Most machines attach to the router and get an IP address successfully. Mobile devices WON'T and have to be given a static IP in order to function. I got a WRT54G for my uncle and set it up with DD-WRT. Fresh new setup and started to notice the same thing. I tried to connect with my phone and saw that it did get an IP but the phone couldn't hold on to it. I've also tried this on the connection open without security. Thinking that maybe it's a security issue. So far from what I can tell it's the version DD-WRT that is installed. I happen to have a 3rd router with DD-WRT as well and works fine. Also, this router is a DIR 601 and is more stable then my Netgear.

Any thoughts are suggestions?

netgear xavb5001 powerline rather than wireless

NetGear - Powerline - Comment please

I was looking at a $200 wireless router for an upgrade plus all the Wireless USB updates for 5 rooms ranging from computers, network printers, and Net Flix (on a Blueray DVD player).
At the end of another thread, people brought up the Netgear powerline. The ratings look good.

My house network cable is from 2000. So, I was considering wireless. Instead, my plan is to pick up two pairs of the NetGear powerline and try it out.

It is my intent to come back and share my experience. This is an invitation to share your experience or ask questions.

Need dual-band replacement internal wireless laptop adapter

An ASUS laptop came with Atheros AR928X wireless adapter. It's evidently not dual-band (2.4GHz and 5 GHz).

I want an internal adapter that's dual band. So I need to know if there are different slot/port standards that determine which type of card to buy.

The laptop is about 2 years old. The driver calls the adapter AR928X where, I surmise, that X is a variable for a set of products. On the Atheros site, here's one of the items http://www.qca.qualcomm.com/technology/technology.php?nav1=47&product=79 , the AR9285 and it uses the words "PCI Express" which I guess is a card/slot standard. Looking at the wikipedia for PCI Express, I see that there are version numbers to this standard.

What are the types of internal cards (slots) for laptops? More specifically, what slot type is the Atheros Ar928X - or, how can I tell which card to buy and which card not to buy?

Thanks.
