Good cheap wireless?

My kid has a new apartment and can't live without wireless but has no money (sound familiar? ;-)) Anyway with a small budget and a desire for wireless what can they do?

Is there a good cheap wireless router or WAP that's popular?
I gave them my old Zyxel router so theoretically all they need is a WAP. But my guess is that a wireless router is the same cost as a WAP anyways.

The router I suggested cost $140 and that is too much for their budget.

TIA, any help is greatly appreciated.

new gear for PTP network

I have a 7 mile LOS network setup using Cisco 13xx radios now and need to upgrade. Provider has boosted the speed up to 50 mbits downstream and I would like to get as much of that as possible. I am using some of the UBNT radios for clients out in the field and have had much success so was wanting to use maybe their nanobridge or powerbridge for my PTP setup and was wondering what would be best for my situation. Thanks

[Windows] A Weird Wifi Issue.

Hey all, I'm having a weird issue with the wifi here, I currently have 3 devices hooked up to the wifi, my cell phone, my ipad and my laptop, both my cell phone and my ipad get good 15+ mbit connections, my other desktop, which is plugged in directly via ethernet also gets 20+mbit.

But for some reason, this laptop, which is my primary machine, will get that 15+mbit, for the first few minutes that I use it, then it nose dives down to 1mbit. Upload doesn't seem to be affected, I get 2.5mbit all round, even with this machine, ping is also good, but I get almost no download bandwidth.

Any ideas as to what this might be?

Recommendation for long-range antenna

Hello,

I have a Asus RT-N16 with 3 Antenna running DD-WRT at the moment. I'd like to upgrade my Antennas, or potentially buy another router/repeater/access-point to get a longer range. I'd like to be able to use my home internet within a 300m range around my home.

I live in a condo and unfortunately not allowed to put an outdoor antenna. I was looking at these and find them interesting. but I'm not sure if they would work well enough installed in the inside?

could anyone recommend good antennas/products, good prices, what technical spec to look for and/or other possible solutions.

thank you

Mobile IP?

OK I've got to vent here a little bit. First, what do you think of when you hear "Mobile IP"? My first thought was something like a WISP or cellular data but no. Check this out: http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/MobileIP/ppal.html

I put this here in the wireless forum because we're covering this topic now in my classes on WLAN and it just seems like something that would be tied with wireless (but obviously not totally).

Basically "Mobile IP" lets you keep your current IP address at remote locations that aren't part of your original subnet. WTF? What is the point of this? Am I just missing something here or does this scream "solution looking for a problem"? Not to mention, what happens if your home and remote subnets are actually the same? Now you have the potential for IP addressing conflicts; and if this "solution" relies on public IPv4 addresses on the mobile device, who in the hell actually has one of those?

Who is this "solution" for? Isn't this what DHCP is for? It's enabled on virtually every home router so chances are if you're not savvy enough you are using it and don't know it (and will get picked right up by DHCP at whatever remote site). And if you are savvy enough to set your own static IP then you are savvy enough to turn DHCP back on or reconfigure your NIC with a new IP.

The only people I can see that would NEED this are people running a server from their laptop and all the clients are pointing to the home IP address. Ignoring why you might be running a server from a laptop, are you really thinking McDonalds or Starbucks is going to appreciate you using up their bandwidth for your server?

Can't Get DD-WRT To Work On WNR2000v3 EDIT: Figured Out Why

Totally new at flashing firmware to routers and stuff, but I've soaked up a ton of info in the past 24 hours about the subject.

I had a spare WNR2000 V3 laying around so I thought I'd give DD-WRT a shot.

I've followed all the basic instructions, done a bit of research, it appears as though alot of the instructions floating around don't apply to me here. Also, it's nearly impossible to sift through the massive amount of info on the DD-WRT forum so I'm presenting my issue here.

I assume my issue is something stupid or really obvious.

I'm able to upload the DD-WRT firmware through the Netgear web GUI, also works just fine using the TFTP client as well. What happens is once it's loaded into the router it just goes into an infinite bootloop. I can't get it to stay on long enough to even attempt to access the interface.

I'm also able to re-flash the stock firmware back to the router via the TFTP client after every time I attempt to flash DD-WRT on there. I did try a previous version of DD-WRT, I may try going back even further. It all takes some time though, as it's about 10 minutes every time I flash something.

Have I missed something totally simple or am I looking at a compatibility issue here? Of course I've made sure I'm downloading the specific DD-WRT firmware for the WNR2000 v3...

Thanks!

netgear double router

I'm trying to setup a netgear wnr1000 as a second router. I guess that is really an access point. Its giving me fits though. Following the faq here I cannot get the second router to work.

I've been first connecting to the netgear through the Lan port. I think my mistake is on the Lan Setup page. For the Lan TCP/IP Setup IP Address I've tried 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.100 where the address of the primary router is 192.168.1.1. DHCP is turned off. After making these changes I can no longer access the router wired or wirelessly. Help! Thanks.

we just got 50/15 service and with our older router I can only get around 24/8, directly connected to the modem I get more advertised speeds.

5GHz Wireless-N PCI card?

Hi All,

Have 3-4 desktops in an area of the building for which it's just not worth pulling cable. So I've slapped a NetGear WNDAP360 ProSafe Dual-Band Wireless-N Access Point up in the rafters and figure on hooking them up wirelessly. I figured on 5GHz, because it's less crowded and they're going to be very close to the AP.

There appears to be only dual-band PCI cards, however.

Recommendations?

Thanks,
Jim

Wireless hot-spot & WPA-2 - How secure if password is common

There is a local cafe with a wireless hot-spot using WPA-2. Every customer who wants to use the wireless is handed the wireless SSID and the **same** password. Am I correct that this is not secure since everyone has the same password? Thus could not an individual with the common password and the appropriate software see what all cafe customers are doing on their individual laptops? If not, what am I not understanding?

Thank you.
