... So why is it that when I look online and in stores, I still only at best see stuff that is still on draft-n spec?

Where's the full-n hardware? :hmm:

Wireless problem when using Netgear wall plug range extender

I have a wireless network that runs fine, using a Netgear DGN2000 (WPA-PSK and on on channel 11) and I've recently purchased a WGX102 and WGE102 range extender combo. I have this set up to run as a wireless access point so I can hopefully use the wireless all over my house. This is running on channel 1.

Now, if I use the wireless in the end of the house covered by the router's wireless network, all works fine. If I then move to the other end of the house, covered by the WGX102, the wireless is still visible, and I able to ping the wireless access point, but initially not the router. At this stage I still have a valid 192.168.0.* IP. After about 150-200 dead pings, suddenly the connection "comes alive" and I can ping the router and all is well.

Moving the other way around, from the access point end-of-house to the router end works fine straight away.

This makes moving around the house very annoying, and is the same on four laptops and my iPhone, and my old BlackBerry was the same.

I've tried all combinations of channels (same and different!), security settings etc, but ALWAYS the same.

Does anyone have any ideas, as this is driving me mad!

Many thanks,
Ed Ludlow

PS I've set the router to run b+g only as this is all the range extenders and laptops support.

Best External Antenna for Laptop Wifi

I need to boost & pickup a weak WiFi signal at a hotel that I am staying. What is the best way to do this?

I found these options:

1) USB Antenna:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360206700020

2) USB Network Adapter with Antenna Jack and an Antenna

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270480507674

3) Another USB Antenna with lots of good reviews:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000QYGNKQ/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=A2LM6ZPY06LT1N&v=glance

Everything seems to be generic coming out of Asia so I wanted to make sure that I am not buying junk. Also would like to keep the cost $50.

Thanks

Slow wireless but fast wired--and it's the computer! Help!

OK, I have this Dell laptop which I bought through the medical school I attend when I started school. Everything was fine at the beginning. It was July of 2007 when I got it, and it came with Vista. Vista itself was a bit slow, but I had no complaints about the network performance.

As time went on, more and more students began complaining about the slowness of Vista, and the school's tech support guys started offering a downgrade to XP, eventually even recommending it. Frustrated with Vista, I took them up on their offer, and had them downgrade me to XP. When I got the computer back, the wireless networking was extremely slow.

When it was plugged into a network via a land line, it was still fast. But no matter where I was: at school, at home, in a coffee shop, browsing the web was excruciatingly slow when connected over a wireless connection. Oddly enough, file transfer rates when I downloaded a large file seemed to be fine; it was only web browsing that was slow.

I took it to the school's tech support guys, but as luck would have it, things seemed to be reasonably fast in their office. So they couldn't help me.

In desperation, I re-upgraded to Vista myself, but that didn't solve the problem.

I've been living with this for over a year now, but anyone who experienced this sudden change in network performance would consider it unusual. It's driving me crazy. As odd as it sounds, I'm 100% sure that this happened when they downgraded me to XP, and I really think it's the computer itself.

Here's what I know:

1) I did a speed test from home, over my residential DSL connection, and got 1311 kbps download, 398 kbps upload. For comparison, I did one on another computer I have at home which has always been fine, also over wireless, and got 1721 and 447. Faster, but not enough to explain the difference--browsing the web is about 1/10th as fast on my school computer as it is on my home one.

2) I'm almost certain the problem is not my router at home, because as I said, my home computer is much faster, and I have this problem on my school computer wherever I go (except in the IT guys' office, wouldn't you know it.)

3) When my computer was downgraded to XP, it was done by simply re-imaging it with the school's tech support standard image. Lots of my fellow students, who have exactly the same computer as me, had exactly the same re-imaging done, without having this problem.

4) I've tried upgrading wireless adapter drivers, to no avail.

Help, please... this is driving me out of my mind! I know the story sounds weird, but I am not imagining things! If there's any more specific technical information that would be useful, let me know and I'll look it up and post it.

Using DSL Modem in transparent bridge mode

I have been using an ActionTec DSL modem with a built in wireless router and 4 ports for some time.

I just purchased a new Wireless N router and need to get everything connected.

What I have done is to use one of the ports on the Actiontec to connect to the internet port on the new Dlink router. Things generally seem to be working. Both wireless networks are available and each seems to be running it's own DHCP server. The Dlink is configured to believe it's getting a static IP address and the Actiontec is still handling the login. Everything seems to be working find with just a couple of quirks:

1) To get to the "admin" page of either router, I have to have connected to that router. (I could probably fix this by allowing remote configuration).
2) Clients connected to one router can't see clients connected to the other one (this could actually be handy if I want to allow guests to connect to the old one).

I had been told that I should put the ActionTec in wireless bridge mode (I presume I would also turn off the wireless radio and move my login information to the Dlink).

My question is this. If I continue running the way I am today (with both networks enabled), am I going to run into any kind of problems? I kind of like this, because I can continue using the wired ports on the old router for my phone, Xbox, Wii, DirectTV that don't need access to the rest of my network and still have the ports on the Dlink free.

help on turning an old router into an access point

i was hoping someone out there could help me out a bit and tell me how all this works as ive been trying to figure it out for hours and im stumped.

right now i have an Actiontec gt704wgb dsl modem/router acting as both a wired router and a wireless router.

I would like to take an old dell wireless 2350 broadband router and use it in another room of the house to relay the wireless signal and create another wired network without running a wire through the house to this other room.

Is this possible with the equipment i currently have? on the 2350 i do know there is an option to set it up as a wireless repeater and ive also heard that u need to bridge them somehow but i am completely lost on how to do that exactly.

if anyone has any idea how to get this to work i would greatly appreciate it, or if it doesnt work any ideas on what i could buy to make it work...i.e. a new router/other equipment to act as the access point.

Here are the 2 routers documentation incase anyone needs them...

Actiontec GT704WGB DSL Gateway

Dell wireless 2350 Broadband Router

Thanks in advance,

What is the best Wireless Router?

I have a Linksys WRT160N and had nothing but problems with it. I upgraded from my Linksys WRT54G2 V1 Router which I had for almost two years. So I am looking for another brand. I have a DSL Modem and use ATT as my service provider, I have 4 hardwired computers attached to it and one wireless laptop which is very rarely connected except when my daughter is home from college.

By the way this is the 3rd WRT160N the other two were Simi-DOA

Please let me know your thoughts.
