Research paper about Wireless security. Survey included

Hello,

I'm writing a research paper on wireless security and one of the requirements is to conduct a survey.

The title of my research paper is: Effective strategies for securing Small Office and Home Office wireless networks

The questions I intend to answer are:
1.) What are common configuration mistakes that contribute to poor wireless security?
2.) What are the consequences of poor wireless security? How easy is it to exploit these flaws?
3.) What are effective strategies for improving wireless security?

The survey questions help me answer these questions. I have created a survey on surveymonkey.com. The link to the survey as well as a preview of the questions are listed below. Thanks in advance!

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2bKahLnsTzKwQ0XA1ZPGOwQ_3d_3d

1.) How significant do these configuration mistakes affect wireless security posture?
 a.) default SSID name
 b.) SSID broadcast enabled
 c.) default admin password
 d.) default IP address
 e.) disabled encryption
 f.) disabled MAC filtering
 g.) DHCP address scheme

2.) Rate the significance of possible results of a compromised wireless network?
a.) access to sensitive data/data modification
b.) Trojan,virus,rootkit, botnet, etc
c.) Denial of Service (DoS)
d.) rouge access point
e.) abuse of bandwidth and other resources
f.) access to wired network

3.) How significant are the following to improving wireless security?
a.) firewall
b.) DMZ
c.) periodic check of access logs
d.) periodic changing of security keys
e.) Intrusion detection system
f.) Honeypot/ fake access points
g.) Proxy
h.) lowering transmission power
i) VPN
j.) updating device firmware

Thanks,

AT&T U-Verse 2wire 3800 gateway

Hi,

Hope someone can answer this for me.

I was just about to have U-verse installed (TV and internet). The tech was explaining things and got to the gateway part and how it was the router/modem all in one. I asked about its security and he was not exactly sure. He kept saying WEP and I asked if it used WPA2-personal (aes) like my current Netgear router does. He was not sure (he also said I should not change the original sign in name or password).

I've done some research to try to figure it out but not sure what the answer is. Bottom line is, does this gateway use WPA2-personal? I just want to be sure it is a very secure router/firewall and that I am just as safe and secure as I am now.

Thanks
Logan

It is no profit to have learned well, if you neglect to do well.

Is this an automated hack attempt?

I have seen similar post regarding a single MAC trying to gain access to someone's wireless, but this sure looks like some kind of crack tool. All the MAC's are different.

Can someone clue me in to what tool this might be? I want to figure out a way to determine which of my neighbors is doing this.

There are hundreds of more lines like this. I didn't realize it, but I was using a WEP key. I turned my wireless off for a day and changed to WPA2 and haven't seen any similar messages as of yet.

Thanks,
