Worst 419 ever - Scammers getting lazy?

This is the most uninspiring story I've ever read to try and bilk me out of money. If I'm going to wire transfer my life savings, I at least want to read about a sick prince with no heirs, or a greedy bank holding onto an inheritance, or something. Put some effort into it next time Mr. Poon!
att=1290209,c,800

Encryped directories in OS X - a how-to

Say you like the idea of FileVault but you prefer not to have your entire home directory. Or you're tired of reclaiming disk space in the sparseimage each time you log out. Or you just need quick, simple encryption on a per-directory basis.

It's possible now with MacFUSE and some plugins and utilities. First, you'll need MacFUSE, which enables you to set up, mount, and access different types of filesystems that aren't supported in the kernel, instead it's done in userspace. Also recommended, but not required, is MacFusion, a GUI front end to MacFUSE. It makes things tremendously easier.

Finally for the encryption filesystem support you'll need the EncFS FUSE plugin. I searched forever for the Mac version, the original appears to have disappeared but fortunately you can download it from the EncFSVault file downloads page. EncFSVault is a software project intended to be a direct EncFS-style replacement for FileVault. If you don't want all that though you can just grab the EncFS plugin off the downloads page.

Now with all three components installed you can create and mount an encrypted folder as a new volume on your desktop. From the MacFusion icon in the menu bar, choose Quick Mount, and then EncryptedFS.

att=1287498,l,400 att=1287499,l,600

If you're creating an encrypted volume for the first time, check the box after you give it a name and a path. Next, you'll be prompted for the password you want to use. Finally what you'll end up with is a new volume mounted on your desktop.

att=1287501,c,400

Because it's just a single directory, it doesn't have its own distinct space allocation so you can add files to it, just as much as your disk drive will hold. Add and create files and folders:

att=1287507,c,600

And the contents will just appear as jibberish if you try to browse the actual directory:

att=1287506,c,600

Adobe SVG Viewer in Safari 3 -

I'm pretty sure this is new in Leopard/Safari 3. I clicked on m0n0wall's traffic graph, which requires Adobe's SVG Viewer and to my surprise it worked. I tried installing it in Tiger and it was a no go, but with Leopard it works out of the box, I think.
att=1282203,c,400

Why isn't TiVo in the IPTV business? -

Having been exposed to the IPTV industry a little I've found that most of the vendors don't make real wonderful products. Some of them are still very beta and missing features, both set top manufacturers and middleware alike.

After playing with some pretty crummy DVRs I began to wonder why TiVo doesn't get into this market. It seems like a natural evolution of their business, plus they have the best DVR software and features available. They make attractive, well-built set tops and have great brand recognition and consumer loyalty.

It seems like they could wrap up the whole package and supply equipment and middleware to IPTV providers.
read comment(s)

WebClip bookmark icons for iPhone -

Part of the new 1.1.3 update for the iPhone (and iPod touch) includes the ability to save a website on your home screen, directly from Safari.

As a website owner, you have the option of creating and providing a custom icon to represent your site on the user's home screen. Apple has official documentation explaining all you have to do is create a 57x57 square PNG file called 'apple-touch-icon.png' in the root of your site, and the iPhone/iPod touch will do the rest, adding the rounded edges and glassy look to match the other icons. It's pretty similar in concept to a favicon, which is now ubiquitous.

Kevin Worthington recommends actually making the icon 158x158 for "maximum crispness" since it will be scaled down on the screen.

I've already made one for volksfolks.org and stopforumspam.com, but I have no iPhone or iPod touch to test it out with.

I wonder if this one could be used for DSLR, it's from the BBR IM Checker widget and was designed by uid://281766.

att=1264444

Wal-Mart's phishing site? - ri-walmart.com

Recently a site has popped up and it's been making the rounds supposedly revealing "secret" holiday specials for Wal-Mart. What struck me immediately though is the domain name - holiday.ri-walmart.com. Anybody who's examined a phish or two would immediately notice ri-walmart.com is not walmart.com.

What's even fishier is the domain itself was just registered late September, and the registrant info doesn't match that of walmart.com. After more digging I decided this is for reals, since browsing to »www.walmart.com/secret redirects you to »holiday.ri-walmart.com/.

I'm just confused why Wal-Mart would apparently register a whole new domain for this little site. You'd think they could simply create a new host on walmart.com. Most astute consumers are likely wise to phishing sites and know how to spot them, so why threaten an already shaky trust by creating an arbitrary domain like this?

And besides, what is ri walmart supposed to mean, anyways?
read comment(s)
