More detail.. DSL[2] (Digital Subscriber Line) is a generic name for a family of standards allowing high speed data transfer over telephone lines (POTS), otherwise known as twisted pair. For carrying IP, DSL competes with cable modems, satellite digital data feeds, wireless digital data, ISDN, 56k modems and more expensive frame-relay lines etc.
Since the twisted pair lines used in the telephone network that are to carry DSL are not shielded from interference, there are limits on the distance DSL signals can travel before degrading the maximum DSL speeds available in all DSL standards.
This distance limitation of DSL is only one of many potential technical hurdles to pass before an installation is complete.

wireless

Normally for business only, wireless is often available in big cities as an internet option. The higher the frequency of the wireless, the higher the data rates possible, but the more directional the signal becomes. For high speed, wireless is usually a dish on the roof that points to the provider, shared through the office.. For lower speed and personal use, there is frantic work to turn cellular phone type frequency spectrum into a carrier for IP, however, the technology and coverage is severely limited right now. (authors note: In Japan, wireless internet has really taken off, with tiny phones offering speeds of 38-128kbps already, and economically priced, this speed is more than adequate for the kind of use you can make of the web within a hand-held unit.. the new model of PalmPilot shows off some of this technology, but Japan now sports higher quality screens, national coverage, and more capable browsers built into cellphones).
