DSL - Section 6The smaller ISP used to be technically squarely in the business of handling banks of dial-up modems, and all the attendant support and standards difficulty around them, and the smaller they were, the more likely they would just serve one or a few area codes. They are now faced with an interesting new scene.. with any profit margin in dialup cut to nothing, they can resell DSL services, built by the CLECs, or offered by the telcos, to their current subscriber base. One challenge for them now is how to differentiate themselves, after all, if everyone is selling the same product, how can they hang onto their subscribers, and how can they make a good margin? These issues have not been worked out, and until the telcos fully enter the DSL field and straighten out their pricing, it is difficult to predict how things will settle.
