DSL - Section 8

The Bell operating companies are being dragged into the digital age by DSL through the sheer pressure from business and home users for faster and more instant data access. Since they have the legislation on their side, they must be made to party, otherwise the last mile cannot be covered. Those dancing with these Bells know they are also dancing with gorillas, albeit heavily sedated ones, since they have all the economies of scale to undercut everyone on data, should they wish. There may be several factors holding back domination by the phone company over data. One theory is that they are reluctant to undermine the rich proceeds of running T1 and T3 lines between business and network company hubs, and the second is a phone company, oriented to analog, and maintaining an aging infrastructure, cannot reinvent itself as a sleek digital shark overnight, or even within years...
