It is retained for the value of any residual information contained in it. G.liteG.lite offers a download capability of 1.5mbps, much slower than pure ADSL is capable of. The advantages of it being an ITU standard, however, is that it hastens the day when DSL modems or computers with DSL built in, will be available from many vendors and operate interchangeably, including internationally, no matter who your local provider may be. This will help eliminate the truck roll (actually, several truck rolls!) now required to provide DSL service to a new customer. G.lite is also designed to be splitter-less -- another key feature to allow end-user installations.
Around the end of 1999, it became uncertain that G.lite (as per the exact standard) will ever really make it, as advances in technology mean that consumer demand is already for higher speeds, and some large phone companies are running trials of splitter-less ADSL that outperforms G.lite.
ADSLThe A in ADSL means asymmetric DSL. This recognizes that for home use, since people tend to be more of a consumer of data than a producer, a slower upstream (upload) speed can traded off for a faster downstream (download) speed. In addition, the ADSL standard allows for regular phone service to be squeezed into the low end of the frequency spectrum. ADSL therefore needs a splitter to be placed during installation.
