| I love my VZ evdo. I get 1.5mbps downstream and 125kbps up stream. latency is around 250ms to most sites. it is great for when you just cant get a wifi or wired connection. | |

| EVDO I have a Blackberry 8700C with Edge service, Samsung i730 PPC with EVDO, and Verizon EVDO air card. I have been very impressed with the EVDO service from Verizon. The Cingular service well.... time will tell. Then again my company pays for all of this. If I had to pay for it, no way. My favorite places to use EVDO are in airports and the amtrak train. Truly couldn't live without it for work. | |

| Re: EVDO I have a Blackberry 8700c as well. I've configured it to use it as a 'tethered' modem - after much hassle, believe me.
I like the ubiquity of EDGE service - which is what convinced me to go with Cingular in the first place. I do a good bit of traveling, not necessarily in major cities - and EDGE is usually right there with me. Surprisingly, my speeds have been fairly consistent - in both urban and rural areas that offer EDGE service.
I certainly have nothing against EV-DO, and if it were as ubiquitous as Cingular's offering, I'd take it in a heartbeat.
I'd also be interested to see what Cingular's UMTS and HSPDA network looks like, but that is seemingly far, far down the road (for non-city environments, at least). --

| Coverage, limits, cost The coverage, use limits, and cost would be the factors I would consider. I would pay more for solid local coverage, and unlimited usage and drop my traditional cable HSI.
Currently I am not serviced by a company that provides this. -- Save water...drink beer!

2 edits | Waiting for reasonable TOS and pricing The title says it all; Sprint has their EVDO service active here, yet it's the standard $80 stand alone or $60 when bundled. Since I have another provider for voice, the cost simply isn't worth it.
Additionally, I'm concerned "unlimited use" refers to the popular industry term, which in layman's terms translates to "limited use."
One thing I'm curious about that I cannot find anywhere -- what's the upload speed like with any of these services? The biggest reason I want a 3G connection is to stream video FROM my car (CarPC). so I'd need at least a 128kbps connection for that. What does either EVDO or EDGE offer? Anyone?
EDIT: For those interested, after a little research it seems that upstream bandwidth is all over the place. I've read one user is only able to get 7-50kbps, while others achieve 100-350kbps upstream. Everything I've read seems to have one thing in common though; latency is pretty poor. 50-350ms delays don't seem too uncommon.
Where's a stratelite when I need one?

| No need for me WiDEN is fast enough for me on my cell phone. I don't need 700Kbps on my phone, so I am unimpressed by either EV-DO or HSPDA offerings. Maybe if they were a lot cheaper, I might consider a switch. -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition." | |

| Verizon here in FL
company give us Verizon BB cards down here in FL for remote support. Great coverage. But the Venturi client is horrible and should not be installed. it creates more problems that it solves.
Verizon EDO BB didn't go down once here during Wilmia, in my areas of Broward and West Palm counties, just like their cell service. Verz built one hell of a network down here in FL.

The day my contract is over, i will be cancelling, and go back to paying $10 a month to sprint and connect via my cell phone for 60-120k

| Verizon EVDO Service I have Verizon EVDO service with the Kyocera card. I have to say that I am fairly impressed. In fact, I ordered four more for my department. For my folks that travel, we easily save the money by avoiding paying for hotel and airport hot spots. Also, sometimes hotel hot spots can give VPN access a problem, but our VPN works fine with Verizon.
I have used the card all over the country and generally the services is between 500 and 1000 down. Works great for general business stuff (even TV streaming with a Slingbox, I know it is against the TOS, but I only use it occasionally).
Verizon also just gave me a demo of the new Blackberry 7130e and it works great stand-alone and as a EVDO modem for the laptop.
Sprint just gave me one of their cards to tryout, so it will be fun to compare the services.
