About my Avatar/Username:

My current avatar (and posting tag) is a political statement that I feel needs to be restated often. Without the freedom to bear arms, all our other freedoms would soon be lost (as some of our founding fathers clearly understood):

When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. -- Thomas Jefferson

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. -- Thomas Jefferson

This avatar is also a reference to my being a hired gun for many years (sometimes literally since I did first responder security for several unmanned data centers).

My user name is simply a description of what I primarily did for a living before I retired.

I work in the broadband industry:

I am retired from the corporate rat race after 40+ years of computer, network, and data communications support. Since my retirement (and before that too) I frequently visit(ed) local state parks, natural areas, etc to obtain material for my Nature-Pics web site (and just to recharge my battery).

Here is a link to a photo of my DIY comm rack made with wall mounted metal frame letter boxes from Office Depot -- certainly not an enterprise grade rack, but it gets the job done.

And here is a link to the current network diagram for dcs-net.net:

Shown below is a clarification of some of the devices/connections in the above diagram (for anyone interested in the boring details):

The Arris 5268AC RG is the physical gateway to my AT&T Internet 25/5 connection. It is currently operating in DMZ+ mode with the WiFi radios disabled.

The Netgear CM-500 modem is the physical gateway to my Comcast Internet connection.

The TRENDnet TEW-829DRU is a dual WAN Tri-band WiFi router. It does both load balancing and WAN fail-over for the AT&T and Comcast connections. It seems to be a pretty good router except for not having priority based QoS (it only does bandwidth QoS).

The D-Link VTA-VR boxes are the Vonage ATA boxes, and the HP 7720 AIO device allows me to send/receive faxes to/from any PC on the LAN. The priority based QoS in the Netgear GS108e plays a major part in allowing successful faxing over VoIP (as well as for general voice quality).

The Netgear GS108e and GS105NA switches are used to allow gigabit Ethernet throughout the LAN. The Netgear GS108e switches are also used to provide Ethernet port priority based QoS (the TEW-829DRU only does bandwidth QoS). One QoS example is the RIPE Atlas Probe (TP-Link TL-MR3020) box sometimes gets quite busy, and the GS108e assigns that device a low priority to prevent it from interfering with my own traffic. The GS108e can also limit its bandwidth, but so far I have not found that step necessary. I do however, use the GS108e to quarantine the RIPE Atlas Probe on an isolated VLAN -- it is after all foreign traffic. Another example is that the D-Link VTA-VR ATAs are given the highest priority to prevent other Internet traffic from causing problems with the VoIP service.
