10 Men Contribute to 80% of Spam
Where are all the spamming ladies?
by Karl Bode 01:32PM Wednesday Nov 15 2006
Security Pro News proclaims that 80% of all spam at least partially orginates from just 10 individuals. The report, based on the Spamhaus top ten worst ROKSO offenders, focuses on the "dark side of American entrepreneurial spirit," yet only two of the spammers are from the U.S. The Inquirer suggests that killing all ten would help. Techdirt correctly observes that you'd simply be playing a bloody game of whack-a-mole.

No need to put out a bucket, anybody in the gun culture already has a closet full of such ordinance.

We've been using Postini at my place for about 2 years and I'm still amazed at how effective it is. They probably give money to the 10 spammers to let them in on the dirty little secret. Did I say that out loud?

Killing the 10 spammers a small start..

Yes, killing all ten would be a small start. cremation with a nuke wil be a small part too. then taking their stinking ashes and sending them into the sun... then grabbing anyone that knew who they were and killing them too...

and so on, and so on...

One shot one kill would be very demoralizing to any unaccounted for spammers.

That said, all this talking of killing spammers is ludicrous, I don't like spam but I'm not about to kill anyone over it.

10 people = 80% spam LIES

if you go back to the spamhaus article you find this text...

Up to 80% of spam targetted at Internet users in North America and Europe is generated by a hard-core group of around 200 known professional spam gangs
It's just disgusting to see so many 'news' outlets get this information wrong and how fast it propagates everywhere.

Spam gangs..... LOL! Wish then they'd have a gang war and kill each other. That'd save us a lot of hassle.

lol. That would be interesting. Then you'd end up with Spam Cartels. Spamming at the highest bid.

The people with the most hate for these guys probably are Mail server admins. The generic complaint via phone call or e-mail gets to be very annoying over time. Then smaller businesses have to deal with the likes of larger ISPS like AOL.

I thought the same thing at first look, but the Security-Pro-News writer says this:

quote:
Spamhaus estimated that as much as 80 percent of all the junk coming to inboxes starts with one of the top ten.
So I assumed he either spoke with Spamhaus, or read something else that suggested these ten all somehow or another have some degree of control over these 200 organizations.

... I can understand some of the opinions expressed here, but killing people is usually considered an undesirable option, and a temporary solution at best ... if there were no profit in spam, it wouldn't be so prevalent ... a better approach might be to publicize the companies that support spamvertizing and boycott them ...

... somebody is paying for all this - make them pay all over again in lost revenue and bad press ...

There is, unfortunately, plenty of money to be made with spam. Spammers apparently make money in different ways:
- Naive people who pay them to send their message, whether that works or not. The spammer wins, whether or not the spam generates money for the advertiser.
- Not so naive people who pay them because their spam work. There is always a sucker or two who falls for it, and one in a million is enough to make a profitable transaction.
- Phishers, ranging from naive to sophisticated gangster controlled operations, who will gladly pay to send a message that can yield good returns when people fall for the phish.
- Botnet owners who pay spammers to infect computers, either directly or through links to a web page designed to try every trick of the book, to make them bots.
- Phone operations who pay spammers to infect computers with dialers to rack up big phone bills by stealthily calling expensive chargeback numbers in the Carribean or in Easter Europe.
- Identity theft rackets who pay spammers to infect computers with keyloggers and/or screen scrapers.
- Porn site rackets who pay spammers to infect computers with BHOs so that they will drive more traffic to their sites whenever the user surfs the web.
- Trollers who use spam to detect valid addresses that they can then resell to other spammers

So, to remove the profit in spam you have to remove *all* those profit incentives. Basically it is now another set of organized crime activities, along with various other rackets and traffics -- there is too much profit in it for it to go away just because you put away a few figureheads.

What I don't understand (or rather, I'm afraid I understand too well) is why there is no more visible and decisive action by the government agencies that are supposed to look after security, because much of the spam ovbiously creates a big security risk not only by luring people into getting their computers compromised, but also by simply clogging up critical communication channels. But then, I suspect that the spammer gangs probably avoid spamming .gov and .mil addresses on the theory that doing so would be more likely to bring retaliation through more or less overt government action. If you were to dump a ton of trash at the door of a government office or a military base every day, it probably would not take very long before something very unpleasant and possibly brutal happens to you.

Re: Plenty of money in spam

Very well put. I had no idea there were that many ways for this crap to be worth while. Sounds like maybe the whole email thing needs to be reworked to provide better protection and privacy. In my opinion, the "band-aids" we use to block all the spam will eventually fail. The company I work for is relatively small, but we get about 10,000 emails a day. 90% of which is filtered out as spam or is virus infected.
