Use your iPhone as a very expensive modem...
(old news - 03:21PM Monday Jan 05 2009)
tags: business · wireless · bandwidth
Rumors of AT&T finally allowing the iPhone to be tethered and used as an HSDPA modem have been bubbling for a while, and now it appears the rumor is at full boil. The Unofficial Apple Weblog is reporting that the functionality may be announced at this week's MacWorld event. Earlier rumors suggested that tethering would cost customers $30 a month on top of your existing voice and data plan, in addition to the 5GB per month consumption cap and overage charges.

Pass

$30 on top of $30 a month extra already and 5gb cap?
ill take 2!

I guess if you already have the iphone and have a need for it, it would be cheaper than getting a data card/plan by itself.

$60 is what it costs to do this on Verizon. $45 for the data plan + $15 for the tethering capability.

I know for sure it would, and it also appears that the set of customers you describe is in fact the target market.

I'm on the fence about a smartphone. I fiddled around with a BB and I really don't get it. It's cute, it's got a real keyboard, the rest, eh.

Whatever I get, I do need tethering. Paying $30 vs. $80 or so for a data-only plan is a no-brainer.

Well, this is kinda useless

So, remind me again why people shouldn't hack their iphones to use netshare?
If I owned a company, I would make the tethering plan you have to purchase so appealing that people would pour in and purchase it instead of hacking their phones and installing 3rd party software to get around the system. But, then again, I am also not a greedy [insert explicative here] who is stupid. People ARE going to use netshare and other 3rd party tethering methods that the provider can't track, so why not cash in on and make the tethering plans cheaper?

how do you know they cant track that your using pdanet. I have heard of people getting charged. Or is that because they use way to much data?

Re: Mooola

No kidding. Is there no end what these suckers will pay to play with their expensive toy? Must be nice to be made of money.

Currently tethering a 'normal' 3G smartphone with no extra charges beyond the $15 no-limits data plan using unmodified AT&T-provided equipment. No muss, no fuss, no insanity.

Re: Mooola

Yes, but that "tethering" is blatantly against the TOS. It's clearly stated that tethering/modems are not allowed with ANY of the MEdiaNet plans, or even the PDA plans for that matter. Only the plans that explicitly mention tethering actually allow it. And btw, it's pretty easy for AT&T to catch you tethering. They just have to check the user agent strings and ports on any given connection. Also, if you use over 1 or 2 gigs on a Medianet plan meant for a crummy phone with a WAP browser, you sure as hell will be flagged down on the billing system. This is standard with pretty much any provider. On CDMA carriers, it's even easier to catch, unless you hack your phone and disable NAI.
So IMHO right now, AT&T is taking advantage of the stalemate that exists in the market right now. Per se, Verizon's tethering is $60, as mentioned. Sprint is also 60 if you want to be able to get Rev. A speeds (few phones actually have Rev A), or want to make/recieve calls while online. And AT&T's DataConnect plans are $60 (tethering/datacard). All have a 5 gig limit. Not a very competitive market, innit? (NOTE: I'm just comparing the LEGAL ways to tether. If you want to tether on the phone-only plans, by all means, be my guest. But as ninjaturtle said, don't complain if you get caught and your account gets terminated.

That's my $.02,

Not enough

Not enough 3G higher speed coverage areas. Plus the "Signal sucks inside buildings" issue. Yes I'll waste $30 bucks. NOT.

Speeds

If the speeds are like what I get over Netshare then hah forget it.

*sigh* why in the world would that ever happen ?!?! I'm paying for a data plan that gives me 5GB to do whatever i want. It's not like the 5GB wasn't paid for..

it would happen due to that nice little cap. Anything over you pay for.

Don't forget to read the fine print.

Sure - I've done it before, and I currently have a HTC Tilt (easier to hack), but I would monitor my usage.

Re: PDAnet anyone ?!

Try PDAnet app for the phone, and iphone as a modem helper program for the xp/vista side, works great.

Blackberry

You could do this via native BB software 5 years ago. Now you can do it via the Bold 3g on ATT. Go ahead and pay your almost 70 dollars a month for it, sheeple.

Cash Cow

The iPhone is a cash cow for AT&T so they are trying to milk it for all its worth and at the same time bilk the customers who are caught up in the iPhone craze.

Get off the iPhone Juice

I have a Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone from AT&T. I made a quick registry change (download Resco Registry... nothing special needed to "unlock" anything... just install) and I use the Windows "Internet Connection Sharing" application to share my $15 MEdia Net internet plan with no 5Gb cap.

I feel sorry for the Steve Jobs worshipers.

I just download pdanet and bam no 5 gig cap here either and still got the 3g iphone.

Just wait till one day at&t gets wise to your registry changes though.

Re: No Thanks

PDAnet does everything I need here:). Windows Smartphone and Verizon service. Really only use it for "emergencies", but it makes a nice backup for just the cost of PDAnet.

just some dude

$30 for tethering is not tethering

$30 for tethering is not tethering, its just another data plan. why should people have to pay for what they already have and pay for. what difference does it make if i surf on my iphone then switch to my laptop. Maybe i just want a bigger screen when i surf. man i hope people don't get suckered into this.

Glad i got a G1.

Deep Packet Inspection coming

Okay, so you can jailbreak and run PdaNet or the like, but when will ATT start DPI to determine if you tether - I mean all it takes is ATT seeing browser types as IE or Firefox to realize that you're not using Safari.. then wham! you've got your $30 extra charge.

Tethering would be a great tool for me in the field, but not for an extra $30/mo... This is my only hesitation

I could be faking my browser agent on my iphone also... I would look more at specific port usage, I'm sure that would raise more flags... I'd like to think as long as you stayed to port 80/web usage you'd be fine, its easy to change/fake your browser agent if/when they start doing this to make it look like you're still coming from your iphone
