Broadband accelerator SPAM
by justin Friday 07-Sep-2001
A number of people have received UCE (unsolicited commercial email) from someone trying to SELL "broadband boosting" software. The URL listed in the email is written in octal (with lots of zeros) in a pathetic attempt to disguise its location.

This low-life uses paypal for payment processing [complaint has been duely sent]. The IP address resolves to a website on a cable network in china, but the guy is an American.. he uses throw-away excite email addresses as a business contact. The website lists dslreports.com as a link in an obvious attempt to make his product "legitimate". Some people would think, from this link, that we are endorsing his activities.

Spending money on something as a result of an unsolicited (spam) email is foolish, evidently there are still people who trust, read, and follow-up on spam, otherwise we wouldn't get so much of it.

Whats wrong with that?

Hey, it worked for me! I sent him the money, he sent me nothing, and He got rich. Perfect.
Seriously, I think if a scam artist is using DSLR as a reference than this news item should stay on top for a few weeks.

Too bad that people can't advertise using E-mail. Everyone is forced to pay huge fees for banner advertising campaigns (average of $20 per click).

It's great that the Internet has imploded. With few businesses spending money, technology advancements will grind to a slow pace.

In every arena, there are scammers. Whether its E-mail or postal mail, etc.

Take this web and shove it.....

They link here????

Is that AFTER they get the money???
If before, then any he gets really are suckers.

I have gotten a few versions of it.

Basically the tweaks need involve nothing but a very simple 10 line or less script to rewrite the registry entries. That's all.

Just a shame someone would prey on those who can't seem to manage to put simply "DSL" into Google where last I checked DSLR would come up first on the first page.

(Not to mention just the annoyance of spam)

The saying is ...

No one ever lost money by underestimating the stupidity of the (write in the appropriate country, race, etc.) consumer. Just another example IMO

If anyone gets this report it with Spamcop.

Go to »spamcop.net and use their reporting form. It will deobfuscate the URL's, generate reports to all of the ISP's involved and send them for you.

You will need to register a contact address with them and also make sure your e-mail program displays full headers for it to work.

There are both a pay version and a free one. The free one should suffice for beginners. Once you have gotten used to it the pay version works well too. More features and no nag screen. This is a potent weapon in the fight against spam.

I think I've reported this at least 3 times. Next time I'll forward it to uce@ftc.gov as well as see which Spamhaus is guilty and post the info here (unless someone beats me to it).

I don't believe anyone at ftc.gov is interested... I wish they were, but..

My favorite "outside" agency to report to is fraud@uspis.gov, whenever I get spam that purports to use the USPS to carry out some or all of the spamscam. My sister is a Postmaster.

Much easier is to forward the spam to spamcop@spamcop.net, and then you'll get an email back with a couple of URL's for reporting the spam. One URL is for members, and the other is for non-members, i.e.; non-paying members.

I do it all the time from my family's many AOL accounts, and keep their mailboxes clean. Of course, they all trust me not to read about Aunt Agnes's diarrhea or Uncle Milt's flatulence, but sometimes it can't be helped, and then I need some fresh air, at the very least....

This may surprise you..

What this company/person is offering appears to be quite legal, (other than the current laws re: spam requests for removal).

This seems to be nothing more than an offering for a "tweak" that is common knowledge among broadband users, (RWIN/MTU adjustment).

Since the "FEDS" don't prosecute those who send SPAM and take advantage of the "uninformed", I have a suggestion.

Let's form a posse', bring a rope, & go lookin' for SPAMMERS...:)

It's a lot like what Bonzi was doing

Bonzi has been putting their ads all over the
Internet (you know the ones that say "Your
Internet Connection is not optimized. Download
Internet Boost 2000 now.")
They were basically doing the same thing for
dial up as what this spam claims to do for
broadband connections - that is charging for
simple tweaks that can be done for free. They're
both preying on newbies who don't know how to
change basic settings on their machines. And both,
while legal, are pushing the envelope when it
comes to scams. Also I wonder if you were to convert
that URL back to decimal, would you get this guy's
IP address?

Ah, yes, Ponzi software. All of their software is evil adverspamming spyware crap. They even pushed a "firewall" that instead opened up ports all over, inviting hackers with port scanners to take a peek.

lots of spam but lots of takers

i got the broadband accelerator spam as well as another one for a $20 program to customize windows (all things you can do either manually or with free utilities)
funny i only get spam in my hotmail mailbox, almost NEVER in my isp mailbox.
i would say i find it amazing that people pay for this, but i also know people who paid $30 for RealPlayer plus, and those who pay $23 a month for AOL so i have ceased to be amazed.
