Many people were thinking that this was the week that struggling Charter Communications would file for bankruptcy protection. Instead, the company has announced
they'll be offering 60Mbps/5Mbps service in the St. Louis area, for somewhere around $139.99 ($129.99 bundled). The 60Mbps number was a very particular marketing choice, given it's 10Mbps faster than both Comcast and Verizon's fastest offerings.
However, with Charter's heavy debt load, it will be unlikely the faster speed gets deployed to a significant number of areas any time soon. The faster DOCSIS 3.0 tier will be used largely as a marketing weapon to fend off Verizon FiOS, and to project the image that the struggling cable operator isn't falling behind. Charter does say they'll be bumping their fastest tier in many markets from 16Mbps to 20Mbps. Customers in our Charter forum
