( old news - 08:38AM Wednesday Feb 18 2009) tags: business · wireless · hardware · Verizon Wireless BroadbandSpeaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Verizon CTO Dick Lynch announced a number of new details concerning their upcoming deployment of LTE wireless broadband technology. Verizon says they've selected Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson AB as their two initial vendors, as Verizon moves into a fourth trial phase before commercially launching LTE service sometime in 2010. The continued trial will be conducted in two unnamed Verizon markets, who'll then be the first to go live when the service is commercially launched. Verizon says they're seeing 50-60Mbps in trials: Utilizing their existing spectrum, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone have been field testing 4G LTE networks in Minneapolis, Columbus, Ohio, and Northern New Jersey in the United States, as well as in Budapest, Dusseldorf, and Madrid in Europe, with a variety of network infrastructure providers. These field trials have demonstrated download rates of 50 to 60 Mbps peak speeds, though actual average download results will not be determined until the commercial launch of the new Verizon Wireless LTE network. | Re: Let's hope they raise or eliminate the caps! The 5GB cap is on Tethering and Modem cards not on Phones. If the phone has the electronics there is no cap. Not to mention if you have an HTC device they are hacked and Verzion can not tell it is being tethering.
They will change the Cap on Modem and Tethering to match the it capability. | |

Verizon Wireless' new, nationwide LTE (Long Term Evolution) network will be the largest in the land, covering more area than the U.S. carrier's existing EVDO network, CTO Dick Lynch told PCMag.com Wednesday in advance of a keynote at the Mobile World Congress trade show.
Verizon Wireless will turn on its first 20 to 30 LTE markets in 2010, and the company is aiming to cover the entire continental U.S. and Hawaii with LTE by 2015, Lynch said.
While Verizon Wireless will definitely carry phones and PDAs on the LTE network, Lynch said he wanted to use it heavily for new wireless data applications, such as portable gaming systems, digital cameras, home security systems, and even refrigerators.
But Verizon's LTE network won't be as open as AT&T's and T-Mobile's current GSM networks. While anyone with a GSM-compatible device can just pop in an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card and get online, Verizon Wireless will still require that each LTE device be verified for Verizon Wireless' network, Lynch said.
When LTE officially launches, data rates will probably be cheaper, and plans will be very different than those currently on Verizon's existing network, Lynch said. For instance, Verizon may charge by byte transferred rather than charging high set monthly fees per device. Sounds like more coverage and a different price structure(bill-by-byte) and still no way to move devices to other carriers.

Its easy for Verizon to say "your not going to solder on the SIM card holder onto the phone, or you don't get access to our 84 million subscribers". Regarding their "open" system, they can easily add a clause that says you have to remove the sim card slot for "network integrity" (not crash the mobile switch (lol)). Its possible VZW will also carry SIM card equipped phones for "international" usage for a higher cost (almost zero difference in manufacturing cost, sim card holder+firmware). They define the playing rules of their "open access" policy, not you, or the FCC. | |

| Backhaul And how many towers have the backhaul to come even close to their "field" trials? Very few if any i'm sure. Hell, the vast majority of towers across the entire US can barely, if at all, saturate EVDO Rev A (both Verizon and Sprint). Is Verizon planning on piping in some major bandwidth to these towers?
