Eight more launch markets should arrive in 2009
(old news - 05:59PM Thursday Mar 05 2009)
tags: business · wireless · alternatives · Clearwire
Clearwire's earnings report released late today finally clarified the company's deployment plans. The newly-formed carrier will spend between $1.5 and $1.9 billion to deploy the mobile WiMax service in eight more markets this year, including Dallas and Fort Worth, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Honolulu and Charlotte. 2010 will see deployment in New York, Boston, Washington DC, Houston, and the San Francisco Bay area. The company posted a $118 million fourth quarter net loss. They also announced that they'd release a new dual-band modem this summer that supports both Sprint EVDO and Mobile Wimax. The company is sticking to its prediction that they will reach 120 million people by the end of 2010.

Re: Only eight

120 million isn't too bad. I suspect its mostly urban though.

If they covered SoCal, they'd hit +10% of that goal.

We need Clearwire in Central Florida.

In Central Florida there are more holes in the deployment of wired broadband than a round of imported Swiss Cheese.

I was looking for home in the area and found broadband availability a mixed bag. I discovered the formula for determining the availability of wired broadband. Drive by and around the property in question. Look for a flock of Direct TV, Dish Network, Wild Blue and Hughes Net Antennas and the likelihood of wired broadband is basically zero. Call the local ISP's and learn that in those areas Cable has not been deployed and there is no DSLAM near enough to deliver DSL. The Cherry picking ISP's do not see the necessity to make the necessary investment to provide full deployment of broadband services in this area.

Re: They need to Clear up their reputation

What the heck?

"I just spent 50 minutes on the phone trying to cancel Clearwire. I had it for a month and it never worked and they spent hours trying to fix it and they still want $400 bucks to get rid of it."

"Clearwire caps everything. cant get a decent download speed even when they haven’t throttled me. Whenever i use more than like a gig of bandwidth in one or two days, they throttle my speeds to 300-500 kbps for a frickin week. They’re customer support techs are pretty cool, but they cant do crap to help you. I hate it. I had no clue when I signed up that i wasn’t actually gonna be able to USE my bandwidth, i mean, sheesh, why would I pay for bandwidth and then actually use it!? Wtf. I dont have the money to cancel, and im getting capped every other week. do you know what its like trying to play xbox live on 400k? Yeah. Doesn’t work that well."

This person sounds like they have no clue wtf they are talking about, especially in regards to playing xbox live (or any online game), which has very little to do with bandwidth and mostly to do with latency. 400 k is more than enough for online gaming. Latency over most wireless connections, however, usually exhibits some latency jitter that causes issues with gaming.

With Xbox Live, 400kbs doesn't work very well with some games. Halo3 for instance. On my girlfriends 768kbs DSL connection, Halo3 won't work since there is too much lag. With Unreal Tournament 3, I can't tell the difference bewteen playing on her 768kbs connection or my 50mbs FIOS connection. It plays smoothly with either one.

Um, from what I look at that website most of those people are very non tech savy... They just seem like total airheads about wi-max in general. There will always be people who complain... people are never satisfied...

Supported?

Wow, so the XOHM service I've been using for the last 5 months might actually be supported? Sweet!

They just have to hold out until June-ish and I'll be out of Internet purgatory and into FiOS territory.

Boston should launch in 2009 instead of 2010

Boston should be launching in 2009 for Clearwire instead of 2010. The network is built for the most part here under xohm and I bought two xohm modems that I can't use till next year here. I may have moved to Scottsdale, AZ before it launches in Boston. Good thing I have a verizon data card for mobile use. I am glad they did tell us when wimax is launching. I
want some choice in quality broadband and for cable co's to stop charging extra for non video customers, some of us like Directv and Dish Network better for our video needs.

I wonder what will be done with the current XOHM devices after they change all the XOHM markets to be compatible with Clear 4G markets.

I don't get it...

Whenever some new tech rolls out Phoenix is always one of the last places to get it, if ever.
Do companies not see Phoneix as good sized market or do they not care ? I have been waiting for Wimax since I heard about it, I'm ready to pony up the cash Clearwire just get it here !

Ok done ranting, back to your regularly schedule posting :P

Have you been to Phoenix lately? It's pretty ass-scorchingly hot out there.

Most of this tech isn't meant to handle "surface of the sun" degree weather.

fail

It will fail with current trends of deployment.. Noone ever learns

Screw it... I don't care.. Deploying in an already saturated markets makes as much sense as me selling cans of fresh air to tribes living in the rain forrest..

Re: fail

My feeling is Clear with hurt themselves since they decided to change and not go with XOHM plans. That would have set them aside from the rest. But no!! Why be different?

Too Slow

This is taking too long, they are squandering the time advantage they had before LTE arrives. ClearWire looks more and more like they took pages from Sprint's Boondoggle playbook.

Fully agreed.

I'd buy it this year but no chance in hell I'll buy into this when I know faster 3G is around the corner.

Buh-bye Clearwire...

...because if you wait until 2010 with NYC then you are in for a huge surprise - by then this market will be largely full with marked down 3G plans, free (or bundled-free) WiFi hotspots etc.

You got this year - if you won't take the you *&%@$ up your biggest chance, period.

Altanta June 1st?

It's my understanding they have serious funding problems.. I wouldn't bet that LTE can take the prize.. we'll see if verizon can manage to get anything done this year like they want too..
