I am a AT&T customer myself and really never had any serious problems out of that weather related one (that was outside the control of AT&T). It's their tech support that sucks beyond all. They barley understand how their system works (I don't even think the techs think their wireless internet uses IPv4); but hey look at it from a technical standpoint - if they don't know the whatcha-ma-call-it from the thing-a-ma-jig then you can get away with so much on their network . Most of the providers don't care about the technical users, they cater to the average user and since the average user is dumb...they just want phones and devices that just work and are so easy to use a 5 year old can use them (its pretty insulting if you think about it!). In fact every time I call up I talk to a person pretty quickly - now getting my problem solved is another story in itself. I don't see AT&T's network to be a bad one, in fact on my mobile phone I have noticed that AT&T DOES NOT "wall garden" you, or in other words, prevent you from using services on other ports (such as FTP, RDP...ect), which I believe T-Mobile used to do that. Even in a recent conference tmobile still believes that "limiting the customer experience make for a better customer experience"... And you wonder why wireless is at a standstill. It's coming, the next era of information age, where all the access to the internet will be in the palm of your hands (no I'm talking about google). Someone in the near future will setup a way to get newspapers, tv, movies, music, magazines all in one device. And all the data will be OTA, wither the provider likes it or not. | |

I just hope we don't take 2 steps back...which Amazon might be doing because they just disabled text to speech and made it so you have to pay more to use it.

Companies keep staff on hand to answer those questions and project what prices will result in maximum profits. The problem is that people like Mr. Moffett see stock prices as the only worthwhile concern for companies- never mind such things as investing in future technologies, improving customer service or increasing employee compensation. This ilk sees customers as nothing more than a money spigot, and believes that all businesses should extract maximum costs for minimum effort and shunt every last dime into dividends to boost up stock prices, so that people like Mr. Moffett can make fortunes playing those stocks on the market.

Maybe the wireless industry should take a page from the API's (American Petroleum Institute) playbook and "educate consumers" on how paying through the nose is actually good for you. Not only are you likely a stakeholder in their business (albeit however tangentially), but paying outrageous fees is helping to prop up the US employment rate and creates high-paying jobs.

They are now adding 250,000 - 300,000 FiOS customers every single quarter...and everyone I know wants this service. | |

| industry evolution.. You all make it seem as if the wireless industry is in crisis.. but in reality it is in a state of evolution. Smart phones are slowly becoming the NORM in the industry and will get cheaper (sorry for all of you paying $600+ for a phone, but your getting hosed) by orders of magnitude-- your $600 phone will be $150 soon. The $300-400 phones will be $60-75. Voice calling will be value added features of data plans. I'm sad to say, there will be many charging for aggregate data caps for some time, but unlimited plans will be available for a $$ Price $$-- but voice will be virutally free as part of all plans (or a bucket of 2,500+ rollover minutes per month).
Prices will range from $25-99 for unlimited voice + 5-10gb all the way upto next gen high speed @ 50mbits unlimited for $99/month. By this time, FIOS should see their first price cuts on the horizon q4-09 q1-10 making all their services 1/2 their current price. Sure, blame the stupid economy, customer retention, more cost effective technology.. but the deals will get better.
BTW, $25 a month for wireless will be a Vonage/Voip killer. Who wants to be tied down to a home land line when you could have a cell phone & same features for the same price each month? | |

Deflation is actually the worst thing that can happen to an economy. Cheaper to a point due to competition is a good thing. Cheaper to where its more expensive to make than it is to sell is bad.
Things getting cheaper has a very serious and debilitating effect on those who make the goods. They usually stop selling them and they and their workers no longer have work. No longer have work...no longer have money...no money to spend means no one buys the goods...the cycle becomes self fulfilling and spiraling. That is not a good thing.
Dont think it can happen? They didnt think so in 1928...they are hoping it wont happen now and are doing all they can to prevent deflation or at least they hope they are doing all they can... | |

There's virtually zero price competition right now and we are talking about THIS news, ablout the loomin price wars in wireless services - what are you talking about?

Fios is a bad idea? heck this numb nuts prob thinks dial up and aol are the future if he can't undestand the value of easily upgradable systems like verzion fios are useing then he is a fool. Providing TV internet and voip all on one line that won't have to worry about congestion is the future for the next 100 years unless LTE and wireless overtake it but with all the complications of wireless technology a solid land line is for all the consumers data requirements is a great investment. He/or his friends are prob just heavily invested in cable or other obsolete technology. I Wonder if this guy could even figure a way out of a plastic bag. People like this d-bag are why America tries to constantly move backwards instead of forwards.
Forward thinking, innovative ideas? HELL no you need stock growth each quarter that's what makes a good company! Who cares about success and good products eh?
