Existing users may see a slight advertised bump this weekend...

Rumblings in our Verizon FiOS forum and the official Verizon forums over the last week or so indicate that Verizon will be tinkering with their FiOS speed lineup starting on June 21. According to self-proclaimed insiders, Verizon reps are supposed to keep mum on the changes until this Saturday. At that point, it looks like customers on existing tiers will see some slight improvements -- users on 10/2 and 20/5 jumping to 15/5 and 25/15 is given as one example, but nothing's been confirmed yet. Insiders seem to suggest the new tiers won't be advertised at first, and will require a contract extension. We asked Verizon for comment on the rumors and were told the carrier "has nothing to announce at the moment."

Impressive...

At the moment Verizon's pricing in OOL territory seems to be a bit high for the speeds, or rather the speeds are low vs. what OOL is offering at the similar price point. This should fix that. I'll take 15/5 over 15/2 any day of the week, and 25/15 over 30/5...even if the 30 is really uncapped...any day of the year. Considering the pricing on 25/15 via DSLExtreme is a mere $55, I'd call that an upload-speed deal. Same thing with 15/5...around here I'd be willing to shell out $80 per month for those speeds, easily

Abut contract extensions, who cares? If the service is that good, I don't mind sticking around for a year.

If 20/5 actually does become 25/15 then naturally you could expect the 20/20 tier going up to 25/25 and the 50 Mbit tier going up to 50/25 or higher. So naturally I'd get 25 Mbps symmetric...mmm, heavy-duty symmetric fiber connections. Wish I had one.

All this to say that I'd rather have 25/25 than 50/10 or even 101/15. especially when 101/15 is running over cable infrastructure that is just barely high-bandwidth enough to handle the load.

For low users, 15/5 for $40 is a very, very nice deal...

Excited at probable speed upgrades.

Here is to hoping the 20/20 tiers get some lovin' as well.

Looks like the opposite. If the rumors are true, 20/20 becomes 25/15. Screw that.

I'm calling tomorrow to extend my contract for as long as possible for 20/20 speeds, in case this rumor turns out to be true. I can always upgrade later if the proposed (delayed) 25/25 comes to fruition later (which I'm starting to doubt).

I'm pretty sure 20/20 is not going away. 20/20 is going to be upgraded to 25/25 in August according to some people in the fios forum.

Hmm, it still seems weird to me.

So right now, we have:

20/5
20/20
50/20

If the rumors are right, that will become:

25/15
20/20
50/20

Until August, and then the rumor'd tiers are:

25/15
25/25
75/25

Now that looks ok I guess, but still the gap betwen the 1st and 2nd tiers is hardly there, compared to the current gap between 20/5 and 20/20. Likewise, 20/20 to 50/20 isn't as big a leap as 25/25 to 75/25.

I guess time will tell. I just wish I knew for sure whether 20/20 was going to be around or not.

I'll just call and extend my contract I guess and hopefully if it goes the way it normally does, I can just start a new contract in August so I'm not really doing anything but potentially extending my contract buy a few months.

It doesn't make sense to adjust the speeds twice within a period of just two months.

Good news

Those speed increase are great and competitve with cable companies.

Cablevision's base speed has been 15/2 for quite sometime now. They also offer up to 101 meg down with its Docsis 3.0 service.

Comcast recently increased its base to 12/2.

Verizon's 15/5 especially with the increased upload will give it the competitive advantage on the lower end.

Cablevision however will still brag that it has the fastest residential internet speeds of 101 meg down.

I believe that Verizon won't match or exceed that until it upgrades its entire footprint to GPON which may take sometime.

It should be noted, however, that Cablevision's 101mb down requires a $300 activation fee, at this time. Speed tests seem very good from those that have jumped on the boat early. I won't do it - I'm actually quite happy with CV's 30/5 Boost package right now - for the price. $39. When my contract expires in January 2010, I hope Verizon has put fiber on the street. A little competition is necessary (for me) to keep what I pay low.

Pathetic

Every time I see Verizon, Comcast, and OOL duking it out, it makes me furious that Time Warner and AT&T offer such pathetic products to the rest of us and there is nothing we can do about it.

Add Qwest and Cableone.

Cableone is a local crappy provider here in Boise, Idaho that has low daily bandwidth caps of 1GB download and 150mb upload (on their standard tier, the others aren't much higher) from noon - midnight. There are no caps from midnight - noon. If you go over the cap they drop your bandwidth in half. They are also way behind the curve on bandwidth (even though in many areas of major cities they have FTTH or at least FTTN). Their current offerings are 3mbps/384kpbs, 5mpbs/512kpbs, 10mpbs/1mpbs.

I would love to have Verizon's FIOS here. I would be happy to pay $60 just for their standard tier...

You are so right. This is soooo frustrating. I have DSL from AT&T. 6/512 for the last 8 friggin' years!!! (Started out as Bellsouth). My only other option is Charter cable & they are so cash strapped, they don't even bury the cables in my subdivision. They just run these bright orange cables right along the ground/across the street.

AT&T has just completely conceded internet service to just about any other company by their actions. My God, the FiOS middle tier will have a UPLOAD speed more than twice my present (& forseeable future) DOWNLOAD speed. It;s almost enough to make a grown man cry.

Re: Flat Out @ $30 USD

That would be nice, higher speeds at a reasonable price.

But, I'm confused- at first it seems that everyone will notice some increase in speed, even if it's not a large increase.

Then, it implies that you must get an upgrade to get any increase in internet speed at all. Which is it?

It would be like Verizon to say that all customers will get some type of increase, around this weekend. Then, require that folks do the CSR song and dance to get it.

If it works like it did last year at this time, existing customers will have to call and ask for the upgrade.

Call for symmetrical speeds..

Symmetrical speeds especially for the lower tiers have been long witheld and surcharged (+$15) over asymmetrical packages. The time's come to truly compete and offer better packages than the competition.. which in most competitive markets means:

15/15 megabits $29.95
30/30 megabits $59.95
50/30 megabits $79.95
103/75 megabits (answering cablevision's 101/15) for
$101.15

We won't even make the comparisons to other countries that have 100/100 for under $50/month

Comcast will be the most hurt from that kind of price scale/cut... but hey, that's competition for ya. Alternatively, they can max out current BPON's @ 75/75 megabit for $89.95 That would be alot cheaper than a truck roll to swap out BPONS which there are MANY in the field now.. so a custom tier for maxing it out should be considered.

Though, this will be a tipping point for many consumers to consider cutting the cable-tv service, because anything above about 30 megabits is a direct result of the customer demanding video services over the internet, be it streaming, downloading or 'illicit' swapping of files. This all comes on the heels of building good will after jettisoning BAD R.O.I. footprints to companies such as fairpoint, SO THE BOLDER THE OFFERINGS, THE MORE GOOD WILL YOU SPREAD (to the consumer) AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CABLE INDUSTRY, WHOM YOUR IN DIRECT COMPETITION WITH.

Fios only overlaps 12% of Comcast footprint. Won't hurt much. This rumored upgrade is directed at Cablevision.

As long as I'm a Vz customer, I care. I plan on squeezing every bit out of the service until the service is no longer worth it.

While we don't know what Frontier will be doing in the long run, they will end up honoring existing speeds/contracts...

Slightly?

Really? "Slightly" is the adjective you used to describe these significant increases? Some people really are hard to please. Sheesh.

Re: Slightly?

In Japan carriers are already transitioning from symmetrical 100mbit connections to 1gbit/s speeds. South Korea plans to have nationwide 1gbit/s speeds by 2012 (or 2013...can't remember which). So yeah...we are "hard to please".

Yes but look at the existing infrastructure of Japan compared to the United States. I garantee you those speeds won't be extended to the rural areas. Since you're so keen on numbers, look up the percentage of rural areas in the United States compared to Japan. (sorry for everyone whose already seen this conversation happen many times on dslr, i just had to point it out)

C'mon FiOS!!

Let's up those speeds! Finally someone (besides Paxio) who GETS IT. There is no "bottleneck" in the net -- we have so much unused capacity it's ridiculous. When I download a new Linux distro, I can download 5 full CDs in five minutes!

I will conduct a speed test.....

But i don't expect much. The test servers are too busy to give an accurate reading. It really depends on the day, not the hour, some tests i've done point to higher than advertised capacity. I believe vz could do symmetrical 25/25 or higher without any issue in this area.

We have the 20/5 package.
